Can /p recommend a good compact?

My girlfriend recently expressed an interest in picking up photography.

I currently use an Olympus OM-D E-M10, so maybe she can benefit from borrowing my lens if you happen to recommend another mft getup.

you already have a m43 setup.
e-pl6 is the cheapest deal around apart from used stuff.

maybe panasonic gm1 if you want it tiny.
otherwise get a sony rx100.

all are great for beginners and have the added benefit of being capable of taking actually good photographs with somebody who knows what theyre doing. x100t is the best of these but the most expensive (900-1000). in addition it has the best build quality, autofocus, and out of camera JPEG quality for noobs. not to mention a great hipster design. any girl would go apeshit for that camera.

If you want a fixed lens compact, the LX100 is -fantastic-. So is the RX100. There are what, four versions of the RX100 now?

Avoid Canon and Nikon compacts.

If you go with an M4/3 body, you can share lenses, which is always a plus. The Panasonic GM series is teeny, and there are a couple different sizes available with different features.
Any Olympus PEN with in body IS would be great, too. Just make sure to get one with the newer 16mp sensors, as the 12mp ones are rather noisy by today's standards.

Good IQ, good lens, shoots RAW, full manual settings, cheap, small enough to take everywhere. You will spend like $100 on the camera, it will be great to learn on, it will be with her in every situation she might want to take a picture, you can't really outgrow it in your first six month-year, and by then she will know enough to be able to make a better decision on what more expensive camera is best.

IMO interchangable lens doesn't offer much value added for a first camera, especially when there are plenty of fixed lens options with good glass.

Agreed, but tbh I don't think a beginner can really benefit much from what it brings to the table over the older LX models.
