I shoot with a 6D after having a T3i then 60D and here are my recommends after a lot of shooting with all 3.
1st you should invest in a memory card that can WRITE at a minimum of 40mb/s I use 32gb and 64gb extreme plus Sandisk and you can find them on
bestbuy.com deal of the day at least once a month for a great price. Going any higher on the write speed is pointless because the camera can't write faster.
2nd starting out I recommend shooting with your save settings as RAW + JPEG. This will let you immediately upload with your JPEG and leaves you with the RAW file to learn how to "develop" your photos. Doing this will create large files so get a good size card and be sure to erase bad shots as you create them but it's good to keep some bad shots so you can review what settings you had and WHY they were bad
3rd you bought a camera that is amazing in lowlight. I have cranked up the ISO to 25,600 and thanks to the full sensor and good lenses I have gotten photos that beat my 60D at 800ISO. Getting comfortable with RAW will allow you to shoot in a lot of conditions without a flash and produce beautiful shots.
4th fuck zooms. An affordable prime lens will produce a better image than a lot of the lower L class lenses. I have done extensive testing with local models and my EF 40mm I bought use for $150 and my EF85mm USM I bought for $360 produce images better than my 17-40L and 24-70L. You have to move yourself to get the subject where you want it but you will smile every time you see the quality.
5th RENT LENSES BEFORE YOU BUY THEM. I use
photorentalsource.com since they are local but they do ship. When I want to buy a new lens I rent it for a weekend and see if I really like it. They have saved me from buying you 24-105 and a 100macro. You can rent for up to a month so go nuts.
6th turn off your display and set your camera to go into standby mode on its own, set preview to 3seconds. Your battery will last a long damn time with this.
