>>2642514A mirrorless can be better for modding then a DSLR, because you'll see what you get on screen and autofocus, metering and flash will just work.
If you just want to try IR and have a DSLR / mirrorless and a tripod, get a $8 Chinese IR filter which fits to you largest lens and $2 filter adaper rings for the rest. I'd suggest ~650nm filter for unmodded camera. (Deeper will work too but exposure times will be annoyingly long and no change for live view focusing.) Cheap filter with unmodded camera is enough for testing lenses for possible hotspot problem.
Unmodded chamera can not do the visible + infrared colour scheme with yelllow filter of course.
In my limited experience, a modded crappy P&S is vastly superior to unmodded DSLR for IR. PowerShots have a thin 8x8mm IR cut filter which is relatively easy to remove and optionally replace with piece of polyester filter. (Lee 87 is the cheapest I think.) Some other P&S have a thick IR cut filter and may require thick filter or piece of clear glass for focus to work. If one wants to mod an expensive camera by themselves, doing a PowerShot first might be a good practice project.
