The STM is for Iive auto focus and reducing sound which are both for video only. Otherwise the actual photos with the STM Ienses are inferior. Tried the MF on the STM, the originals work just as fine. If you can't focus a Iens with a graduaI fiIter on then you're not a photographer anyway.

Do lenses degrade over time? I know it sounds silly "cuz optics n shit", but I'm always hesitant about buying used.

So, that being said, is a high quality lens that came out years ago still just as good today (assuming that there is no scratching or internal problems with the glass)?

STM is for video (reduces focus sound and has live focus on new Canons)

Plus they produce lower quality shots. The 18-55 actually has more elements in more groups to adjust for everything working internally but that convenience sacrifices photo quality.

If you don't use video (you ONLY take photos) STM are downgrades in every category. Check out the comparisons.

50mm stm has a real focus ring, and a metal mount. That puts it ahead of the nifty fifty for a lot of people. 7 bladed aperture over 5 means slightly more round bokeh.

Your priorities are not everyone's priorities.

I would not buy the STM lenses either, but I can see why some people would.

The material the mount is made of is pointless on smaller units, let alone the smallest and lightest unit they make.

That's the only real difference, but even then a lot of people like less circular bokeh anyway. Besides, sun stars are MUCH easier to get via the NON-STM version and come out MUCH more clear. the washed out sun stars from STM call for too much post processing and never look near as natural.

Which is why it was asked what photographer (non video user) would get these if they already had the NON-STM versions, which are superior in every photographic way despite being older.

The issue is why a portable MF and why not a real 35mm compact like a Contax T2? Well i feel my V700 35mm scans aren't just cutting it and I can't bring my ETRSi with speed grip + AE finder everywhere, it just isn't an everyday camera.

hence the need for a more portable MF solution

The glass will be fine. That's why you see Nikon shooters collecting AI glass, or mirrorless people buying adapters.

First generation ring motors had a tendency to crap out after about 5-10 years, and nobody's sure about the current crop of ring motors.

Again, this is not to argue with you or anyone. This is a real question for experienced STM users.

Got a chance to use a few this weekend and while the MF was nice and smooth, the quality of photos was not near as good. 50mm was too slow in focus and day time bokeh was not as good. Night bokeh was nice though (personally the less round bokeh can give a nice effect like what you'd pay extra for in a filter)

The 18-55 STM was horrible though. It was a complete step down if not 2 steps down from the efs IS 2. The barrel distortion was horrible past maybe 28 or 30 mm and at 45 mm and above it made every shot look like a corrected shot from my 14 mm and 15 mm lenses. Chromatically it doesn't hold up well either.

Tried them both with video and they are a bit better than their NON-STM versions but for photographers it's confusing why anyone would get these.

Feel free to throw out other STM experiences here, but the 18-135 and 28-135 are just really bad lenses in general.

I'll point out, these are $125 lenses we're talking about.

A better mount is a better mount. It just is.

A better ring is a better ring. It just is. (and a ring can be great for portraits, where you need to adjust focus a bit to keep it on the eyes)

Bokeh is important to a lot of portrait photographers, which is what the 50mm f/1.8 lens is advertised for (80mm on crop, great for portraits)

So again, just because a feature isn't important to you personally, doesn't mean that it isn't important to anyone, or that that person is wrong.

Image quality comparisons don't hold up in the real world. Sorry guy. I can see what you're saying, and you aren't wrong, but your dismissal of everyone who isn't you is shameful. The lenses aren't for you. Great. Don't buy them. It's as easy as that.

I don't have an 18-300mm lens. I have no use for it, an it doesn't suit my needs. But I don't pretend that it's a useless lens that nobody should ever buy.

Uh, let's not go overboard here. Either of these isn't particularly high-end as far as lenses go.

Now, if you want something nicer on APS-C, maybe have a look at the Sigma 18-35mm Art f/1.8. It is a much better lens and still quite affordable.

I read "photographer-quality photos", so I think it deserves mention.

It's an actually pretty cheap solution to most of the issues that were mentioned in >>2644944 - that is, if you also see most of them in the IS, as I do, and were looking at the STM for that reason.

Well, if either the IS or STM are fine with you or if you can make do with a few cheaper primes, don't get this lens. Simple.

What backpacks does /p/ use? I've had this photo bag that would only fit a dslr with a mediocre sized zoom and a prime, which I carried inside a regular backpack. However as my lens collection grew I've ran out of space in the backpack and this bag inside occupies most of the space anyway, with other lenses in bags they came with piled on top. My newer wide angle won't fit the inner bag at all.
Anyway, I'm looking for a camera backpack below $200 that can fit a dslr without portrait grip, a medium sized telephoto lens, a wide angle zoom, go-to zoom, 50mm prime and a lightish tripod, as well as some minor stuff such as cpl filter, remote etc. I plan to use it mostly for daytrips.
Personally, I'm leaning towards some of the National Geographic backpacks. Frankly, mostly due to the looks, as most of the camera backpacks look outright depressing and communistic, probably to look inconspicuous but Manfrotto or other company's logo always gives it away anyway. I also like having a roomy compartment to put non-photo related stuff in, books or food, the amount of pockets to store trinkets in. I do worry about the build quality though, seeing how it's made by a company not exatly well-known for its bags, and that's enough to cause suspicion.

Another interesting speciment is the Lowepro Flipside 400. A complete opposite, it's for camera equipment only, is weather sealed and ugly, but putting a zipper on the back combined with a stomach strap seems like a great idea. It honestly seems like a way more practical backpack however it appears that it has too much room for lenses and no room for other stuff I wouldn't want to see in the same compartment as optics.

Does anyone have other suggestions? Willing to share some words of experience and wisdom maybe? Recommend a model they like?

I gave up finding a "stylish" photo back pack that was also A) ergonomic B)suitable to my needs. And no, those bag inserts that transfrom any regular bag into a "photobag" are not a good option.

Convince me to buy the Fuji X-T1/X-Pro1 over the Sony A7R.

FF vs crop (i'll be adpting manual focus lenses), better video, better flash system, better accessories, more pickles, similar DR, lens system, and no filter over either sensor... <1/2 the price used. Is it worth it? I am currently and have always been a minolta X700 shooter.

Using it for studio and journalism. Will see printing eventually. May purchase lenses down the line. WILL purchase flashes down the line.

Handgrip.

Shoulder strap is faggy as hell, and you need to hold your camera anyway even with the shoulder strap, otherwise your camera will fly everywhere and hit stuff all the time.

If you're going to need something to assist you with the holding, might as well get a hand grip that glues the camera to your hand.
Plus you can shoot while on bike as well.

for journalism, you have no choice but to go with the sony system. there are no tele zooms for the fuji system.

So I'm going to get a full frame, and I can't really decide between the 1D series and the 5D series.

Why do I need one? Bokehwhoring is what sells in my market, and I'd like the improved low light performance offered by a larger system. I shoot, in order of percentage of income, weddings, concerts, and sports.

I'm going to keep the 70D and the price difference isn't really concerning (I capitalize over five years anyway), nor is the additional weight of the 1D series over the 5D an issue.

I'm also curious if Canon will actually announce a new 1Dx in the next couple of days, so that'll play into the decision as well.

I guess it's one of those things where I know either will do everything I need one to do, but which will end up offering me a greater additional value beyond that just meeting requirements...

what's inexpensive? there's always the 43mm 1.9
you could give the 35 3.5 a try, though the newer FA 35 f2 also works.

this is in a higher price bracket, but people usually literally murder to get the 31 1.8

field of view is funky on the 35mm get the 50 mm f/1.8 instead and it's cheaper. that lens is more in line with what your eyes see. if you need a wide angle get the 21 mm.

Ok, so i am done with my d200 and gx1 load out and need something to replace both. The cams im looking at are the gh2/3, gx7, and fuji xe1. I mainly shoot stills of anything except studio work and weddings. But I was interested in the video side of it all since i am in car clubs and things that id rather get on video. Would the xe1 be good enough for video? And from what ive heard is that the gh3 and gx7 are mostly the same, but i cant find truly concrete facts all together.

Go to the pentaxforums user lens review section. Not the most objective place for scientific reviews, but the scores will give a rough idea on what might be worthwhile to look out for. Then just go scour KEH/ebay and see what comes up.

Also worth noting that a lot (but not all) of M/A and even FA lenses share the same optical forumula, so if you can't find one version, look for the others.

Of course Tamron had QC issues with this lens, but if you get a working one, it's pretty much the same thing.

to contribute to the discussion, i shot about a year with the ef-s 55-250 IS STM and the lens suprised me, autofocus is faster and more precise than my usm lenses , IS also works good and image quality is good for the price(200€).

Those are the economic class racers. There are two sub-classes, one is driven by compressed air and the other is by LiPo batteries/brushless motors.
Built extremely light, those things have massive torque and very very efficient. Think about a go-kart with a V-8 with the fuel consumption of a scooter.

Both lenses are kinda underwhelming.

You could use CaNikon or perhaps A-mount lenses with a better adapter / speed booster. But then you loose some of the AF capabilities, PDAF will mostly be just 5 center points, same as with many off-brand lenses.

Or you could use a Sigma f/2.8 prime, but that might not suit your needs very well if you're recording autocross.

Basically, get an A7S, A7R II or GH4 for video instead?

Sony has no lens, the ones they do have are mediocre at best.
If you already have Canon it would be better to get a 70D. Much better for video, it's hybrid AF system is much faster and more accurate than the a6000. DR and noise difference performance doesn't show much in video.

If you are actually using a Sony E-mount lens with PDAF, nothing is generally faster and the accuracy is extremely marginally different.

Remember the crop factor of 1.5 on the D3200. The 35mm f1.8 DX would give you a comparable focal length of 53mm. Whether a 50mm lens would be 75mm.

It's a cheap point & shoot, and often even worse than my cheap Xiaomi smartphone's camera (or Apple / Samsung / ...).

I guess it suffices to capture memories or such, but it does it with crappy image quality. I find that quite unpleasant.

Frankly, avoid that shit unless it actually interferes with your life to spend more.

As far as I'm concerned: Get the D3200, stick a 28 to 35mm prime on it (full frame prime, that is - but most are), and you have a 50mm equivalent that you almost certainly will be able to use for a while...

To me, enthusiast midrange cameras are like an A7(II, S, ...) / D750 / GH4 with some $800-ish lens.

And pro cameras are like A7R II, D810, Phase One.

Guess what lens is right under the FE 90mm lens. It's the fucking FE 55mm lens from Zeiss.
So not only does the E-mount have the sharpest of the lenses, they also have the second sharpest.
And Nikon needs a 4000 dollar Otus lens to even get a foot into the 3rd place.

Some people are willing to sacrifice a little bit of photo quality and focus speed for convenience and a quieter focus.

The STM trades off focus speed for focus sound. Photo quality with STM isn't as good but that's because there are more elements force into a small space with all of the now internal focus.

Some people just like a more simple user experience.

It's 33% off and oly cost £282. The aperture is almost as wide, and it's slightly narrower. 42mm equivalent instead of 36mm equivalent.

But it's well worth the cost reduction in my opinion.
If you ever upgrade to Full Frame, it'll be compatible with full Frame as well.

I know about the Sigma's but I was replacing an old camera body so I went full retard and was considering the Zeiss. May get one in the end.

£280 is absolute killer deal for it.

The main advantage of that lens is the cost effectiveness of it, and the fact that it's a full frame glass so you won't be stuck with APS-C if some other things happen.

Once you so full frame though, the FE 28 jumps up exponentially. It's actually a scary sharp lens.

That's the paradox. The mirrorless cameras that are really good at stills are also extremely good at videos.

You should look into the ones that have build-in Phase Detect autofocus on the sensors.
The NX1 and the A6000 have a shit ton of these build in, and it's no coincidence both cameras happens to be good at video as well.

AFAIK only the LAEA2/4 do (their own) PDAF, but these only work with A- to E-mount.

Sure enough CDAF is not bad at all on an A6000, but it's probably just not how you would want to film moving subjects.

That said, if you have the dough for an A7R II, I think that one can do PDAF when you're using an adapter and CaNikon lenses.

Throw some paper on top for friction. It will wear out your nibs faster, but you get more tactile feedback.

In general, it's better if you just force yourself to use it. It takes some getting used to for the cursor to move according to where place the pen, but that's a small hurdle. After that you'll wonder how you ever got along without one.

I'd suggest you get some lens instead for that money. With the fool frame comes great costs for lenses. You wouldn't need the FF anyway unless you want it for a specific task which I doubt.
Get some juicy lenses for your existing camera, it will improve your photo experience in a much better way than a fool frame body.

That's because some of those lenses are among the best in the world. The FF E-mount system is actually incredible if you're a prime lens fan.
The 28mm lens is a tier below the "best of the best" category and well priced for its capability.
The 55mm Zeiss lens is among the top in the maintain peak.
The 90mm Macro G lens is also at the top of the world. And I would argue it's actually well priced, all things considered.
The last two aren't cheap, but they are some of the best lenses in the world if not the best.

The problem is as you noticed in the Zoom lens category. The only good telephoto lens they have is the 70-200mm f/4 G lens and that's above your price range.

Personally, I think it's hard to regret having the A6000 as a secondary camera even if you have full frame (right now at least, we can be pretty sure that better gear will come along in the next years).

Probably because it's not as crippled as the CaNikon APS-C. I can use glass with dumb adapters or full frame E-mount glass and it just does not feel really wrong in either case.

But it's not like it is a *substitute* for a full frame camera. If you need a full frame, get a full frame!

I think the 55-210 is probably overall a bit better and the 16-50 quite a bit worse.

Anyways, I personally think the bigger handicap here is that most of the best zoomie and also prime lens deals from the lineup of Tamron / Sigma / Rokinon / ... are not on the Sony E-Mount yet.

I recall at least two sony FF tele lenses cost under $1k, and some tele primes by Rokinon and other brands too.

Of course there also is the option of using a CaNikon adapter, manual or smart. But that setup has limitations; you might easily have reasons for getting an A7R II instead if you desired to do that.

You can look at the RX100 iv which has strikingly similar architecture as the A7Rii, it was built as a micro A7Rii, and it has PDAF. The only problem is it's a fixed lens, so we don't have confirmation yet.

They might put IBIS into the next APC-S flagship (a7000?). BUT, all the "juicy" lenses are going to be full frame from now on. Like Canikon, Sony realized that there is more money in FF compared to APS-C. There might be a lot more crop bodies sold, but a ton of crop user never buy anything beyond the kit-lens. FF users buy lenses, and the Canikon (and soon Sony) lens catalogs reflect that.

They don't have to be strictly the same sized sensor to have similar features.
They just need to be from the same generation, and build on the same architecture principles.

Each generation, there are certain features that are build into the entire family of products, from top to bottom. Something they have in common due to, for example, the new way they are being produced. You may be unfamiliar with this concept, but it's something that's used very often in eletronics companies.

Nikon D7100 vs Sony A6000?

I definitely like the faster shooting and better AF of the Sony, but Nikon has more lenses. I already have a Canon DSLR and a Nikon film body, but I wouldn't mind getting a MILC either.

Literally any. Nikon was king throughout the 70s, and 80s. Any F camera is good. F3 and F5 are considered the best manual and autofocus cameras, respectively. F100 and F90X give you miniature versions if the F5 and F4, respectively. The F90X is actually better than the F4 at AF, actually. The F3 is a tank, and considered the king of Nikon professional manual focus cameras. The FM2 and FE2 are solid, small, and highly featured. The FA is manual focus, but comes with priority shoot modes and matrix metering. Very cool camera.

The FM10 is a piece of shit made by Cosina and costs as much as a FE2. Get the FE2.

The FM3 is a FE2 combined with a FM2. The prices preclude most people from buying one.

They're comparatively shit for moving subjects. Also, this happens.

I'm not saying you can't ever get a good shot, but it'll likely have to be center focused if its any difficult to focus at all.

No. A lens with a faster maximum aperture (like f/4 or f/2.8) will stay wide open for all composing and metering, and autofocusing. It's when a lens has a maximum aperture is smaller than those numbers that you run into issues. If a lens has a max aperture of f/8, you won't be able to use the AF points that need f/4 and f/2.8 to function, because there just isn't enough light for them to work. If you stop your lens down to f/11, it's still sitting at max aperture (f/2.8 for example) for all but the exact moment the photo is taken. If you look down the barrel of your camera while you take a photo, you can watch it happen.

But that's not even the issue. Obviously the aperture can be open before you focus, at which point you still have your (still comparatively few and centered) AF points.

It's just an issue with various lenses or with tracking *after* you have some kind of focus lock... unless your aperture goes wide open every time again, the PDAF on your DSLR can't measure with the other focus points again.
I'm not actually sure if any DSLR actually can do video or high-speed shooting with re-metering in between... though I guess at 6 shots / second or so, its maybe working.

The "whatever" might be rapid serial shots or video, too.

As far as I know the mirror needs to be down for PDAF metering on DSLR.

I plan on getting a stylish messenger bag for walking around the city, but for school I need something that can carry my lunch and books and shit. The NatGeo bag was perfect and actually looks good.

So I got some softboxes, 5500k lights inside which I imagine is pretty standard, but I swear they have a slight magenta/pink tint to them, and I'm not too happy with how they look on camera. For lack of a better term they just kind of look gross. Anyone else out there using softboxes?
