Now that the 24mm 2.8, 40mm 2.8 and 50mm 1.8 ll / STM primes are all pretty much the same price, which one reigns supreme in photo quaIity?

The 40mm is the sharpest lens ever made. Too bad it's a retarded focal length an f2.8 max.

There are 14, 15 and 16 mm at 2.0 and 2.8 that are larger and take in more light. They are wide angle primes that are nearly 8 times as heavy but are worth it.

Try a 3rd party. Most of the reviews show they are just as good as the originals.

The 24mm is fucking great and it is definitely sharper than the 1.8 II. It can get closer and the background is softer and is better captured with the 24mm.

50mm 1.8 II AF speed is much better than all of these though and the extra light it takes in still makes it a better lens for photographers willing to move around to get the right shot.

24mm only wins for getting closer to the subject, weight and macro sharpness.

The 50mm and 24mm are tied for the sharpest they've ever made though.

Not in the slightest. In my opinion, 50mm is just a bit too tight to use as a general purpose standard lens, while not being tight enough for portrait purposes. 50mm is the awkward focal length; it's neither one thing nor the other. 40mm would be great as a standard, with 85mm for portraits.

Agreed, 35mm-40mm Equivalent is just god tier for everyday photography, fast 50s are good for subject isolation shots and general outdoors style stuff but if I were shooting portraits or cars I always reach for the 85mm.

really sharpest? I thought the 50 mm were sharpest, well there are sharper but they are very expensive.

I don't care about max focal length I am working around F 9 to 11

So for me sharpness is NB at those numbers

I recently dropped my 50mm off a cliff does anyone have experience in fixing lenses

Are you on crop or full frame?

24mm is for crop, 40mm is for full frame.

a 24mm on a crop still produces better photos (quality) than a full frame with 40mm and captures the corners better.

Fucking pleb. 35-45mm is best focal length. 50mm is way too tight, might as well go 85mm. The only reason 50mm exists is because it used to be cheap to make.

Got a 90mm Nikon macro on my Canon, it's scary sharp but I'm working on getting a Canon native macro. I have an adapter, it's not the ideal situation.

This. the whole BS about crop factor affecting DoF stems from faggots obsessed with working distance and being afraid of invading somebody's pwecious personal space, you can achieve the same look, just not at the same distance.

I was so close to switching my system completely (had a Canon 40D and frankly I am falling for MUH DYNAMIC RANGE, plus I wanted video) but I bought a 100D just so I could buy the 24 EF-S and use the combo for everyday/travel.

It's truly a great lens. Unfortunately I'm a shit photographer and on the trip I probably shot a couple of decent snapshits in 900 shots.

I'm finding the focal lens perfect for portraits but difficult to use for anything else. Maybe I should just get closer to subjects.
