Quick question, I'm trying to take a long exposure shot of the meteor shower tonight as I'm somewhere with insanely low light pollution, however I have no idea what settings are best on my camera. I'm using a Samsung NX1000 with the 20-50 lens. Thanks guys.

20mm, up to 25 seconds. Iso 1600-3200 depending on aperture.

Experiment from there.

The real answer is "depends." Take some shots on manual and then adjust aperture. You have all night really to test it out. Just expose for the stars and you should be fine. Most images are highly post processed though.

ok great thanks. my aperture can be anywhere from 3.5 to 22. would around 10 be a good place to start?

You want to be wide open for this. Don't worry about sharpness or stopping down. You want to gather light.

500/focal length (or any modification of that formula) is how to determine exposure for stars before the earth's rotation becomes a problem. Go lower (400/fl) or higher to taste/depending on print size.

Widest aperture possible, f3 in your case. As isi said, probably 20sec or so before you get trailing with 20mm, experiment with ISO to get the result you want.

I'll get out there and do some star trails if the clouds don't come in. Just do continuous shots and use StarStaX.

So my 18mm lens will give me 27 seconds, right? If I want a bigger resolution picture, I should do 600/18, for example?

If you want larger resolution go smaller. 450 or 400 should be tight enough for all but the largest.

600 is sufficient for Web and smaller prints.

There's always some movement. Stars are never, strictly speaking, points of light. But it's negligible til you start to deviate from the loose rule

Keep in mind that your 18-55 probably doesn't have a hard infinity stop for focus, so you'll need to focus on something really far away, switch to manual focus and leave it alone.

Because stars move, placing an upper limit on how long you can expose if you want them static with no trails if you dont have a tracking mount (most people do not)

Are you fucking retarded? Anything past 20 sec or so will result in trailed shit stars. To get anything worthwhile, ISO needs to be bumped, especially when you have a slow lens like OP. Have a think before tearing into a newbie and giving him incorrect advice.

Earth rotates and orbits the sun, the sun orbits the galactic center and also moves within the gravitational forces of the local star group and by the forces of the nearby galactic arm. with what you have, go 20mm at F3.5 or F4 expose for 20-25 seconds and have iso on 3200

do it somewhere relatively far from a city or town, the clearer/darker the night sky the better and do the rest in post processing. Check out Lonely Speck they're cool
