Hey /p/. I'm a beginner when it comes to photography, and I currently do not own a camera. However, I've been trying to learn photography as best as I can, so I've searched up some cameras for sale in my area. Turns out there's a Nikkon d3100 available, 2nd hand, for 170€. I was wondering if this was a good deal since the camera has been discontinued, so I'd like your input. Thanks in advance.

You're best off getting a cheap full frame camera, you can get a Canon Rebel (can't remember the model number) for under 100 Euros. Then spend the rest on glass for your camera. Using a full frame camera and buying more lenses will teach you far better than a d3100 and kit lens.

What's the difference between a full frame and a DSLR? And how do I know which lens are a good pick for my camera and which aren't? Sorry, I'm pretty new at this.

Uh, and you really determined the D3100 might be adequate?

It's not a terrible camera, but it's not really terribly modern / great or anything.

I guess it is versatile since you can swap lenses, but most lenses make not that much sense (in terms of cost to image quality) to buy or rent and put on this body.

As I said, I don't know anything about camera's (most i've used is my cellphone to take pictures, that's about it). And the cheapest I found was the d3100, which didn't sound much of a bad deal, since it does bring the kit lenses. That said, being in 2nd hand, I don't know in what state the camera is in.

Full frame is a DSLR sensor format. It's called "full frame" because it's the same size as a 35mm film, in contrast with what they call "crop sensor", which is any sensor smaller than that. Typically refers to APS-C, which is 1.5x crop on Nikon, 1.6x crop on Canon.

Posted too early. Your lens choice is going to depend mainly on what you shoot. Usually the kit lens is good for beginners because it gives you a decent range and is inexpensive. After some time you'll either find you need something wider, or something better in low light, or something very specific.

Well, unfortunately, I can't find any Canon Rebel around my area, so I was wondering what else would be a good idea. My father owns a Nikkon d70, so I might borrow his for a while until I can find something decent around me.

Currently, cheapest I can get at my local store is a Canon EOS 1200D for 283€, with kit lenses included.

So "been trying to learn" meant not that you have actually read anything about the basics yet.

Fine. Well, the issue to start with is more what you expect to shoot, and how you want the images to look.

A D3100 is good if you have relatively low expectations. With the kit lens, it won't look better than what a decent cell phone camera from last year can do.

You can of course stick on other lenses and shoot things you couldn't have with the cell phone, but how much did you reserve for that, and what do you want to photograph?

Well, I want to photograph mainly nature; I have some hills near me which make cool photos, but maybe in the future I'll move on to other things. For now, nature (if that's how it's called), and if possible, night sky.

You can try the nature shots, I'm sure you'll get something. Those immensely good-looking nature photos you see online are usually shot with better cameras and lenses though - don't expect getting that.
What you can still do is take a bunch of more zoomed-in shots and stitch them with Hugin, if you have the patience for that and the scenery isn't moving too much (plants in wind, people, ...)

Night sky will probably be a little harder with this lens and camera. I imagine you'll get a fairly noisy picture with star trails from the brighter stars if you do longer exposures, and relatively few stars if you do shorter ones. YMMV if you have a mount that compensates for earth's rotation, but it'll likely still be a very noisy picture.

Ah, for both of these, you'll want to get a tripod.

1200D is a Rebel, in Europe they aren't called Rebels though. That could work for you, this was taken with that camera and a kit lens.

Borrow the D70. It is outdated but capable. You will have a better idea of what to get, if you had some time with a camera first.

Just throwing this out: while Canon is incredibly outclassed in the entry sector, right now (at least in my country) you can find 7ds at 400-500€ which is NOTHING for a pro body, and Canon didn't really upgrade its sensors past the 7d.

You don't NEED it but it's a camera you won't change and it won't slow your progress down with crappy controls.
I'd rather get a 40d or 50d than a 1200d, really.

Basic set of what?

Typically, I recommend tripods with head and plate for around $90-250. Those under ~$150 are mostly Chinese - the $90 option here is a Dic&Mic E302 from aliexpress (pic is the slightly more expensive carbon one - the alu is just the same with slightly heavier alu pipes).

I've tried about four $10-40 tripods before, but those did not even work for my casual dad who wanted something for a point and shoot. Too low, shaky, extremely low weight capacity, slow to setup, bendable as fuck, too big when collapsed... take your pick. They were all shit.

Do you have a dic&mic tripod? I was looking to pick up the heavier e303c for ~170$.

Wondering about the quality, seems a bit too good for the price. Also can't find much in way of reviews even for the more popular, smaller e302c.

The quality of the E302C is really quite good.

I can't find any noteworthy flaws in the tripod itself, and even the head -which has flaws, namely that the whole half-arrested settings are like on a 1/4 turn of the knob and therefore hard to pick, and that releasing pan allows it to tilt like 1 degree- is not bad. It still has pretty sensible placement of a sufficient number of spirit levels (you'd think this is a given on all tripod heads, but it isn't), a nice arca clamp and plate, and sits *really* tight when arrested.
