Oldschool Voigtlander was, for the most part, not very good. Certainly not worthy of notable mention in the same sentence that tries to shit on Zeiss Jena. What *was* good hasn't aged well, most vintage Voigtlander glass is unusable due to cements failing.
"Voigtlander" doesn't "still make" M42 lenses. Voigtlander integrated with Zeiss in 1956, was fully sold to Zeiss in 1965. Zeiss/Voigt stopped making cameras in 1972, Rollei bought the Voigtlander name in 1973, Rollei collapsed in 1982, Plusfoto got the name, then sold it to Ringfoto. Starting in 1999, Cosina (who has long been a behind-the-scenes manufacturer for pretty much everyone) started releasing products under the Voigtlander name, which is your modern Voigtlander.
Many degrees removed from being the same company.
The original Voigtlander was an important manufacturer to the extent that they were innovators, not that they were the tip-top of quality.
