concert photogs usually give up because either
1. they don't think they're adequate enough to shoot for publications
2. they're too comfortable with themselves and eventually get bored (happens to punk photogs the most)
3. they get discouraged by better/more experienced/older photogs
just do your thing. if you don't like it then do something else. if you like it, keep on going. build a portfolio. send it to local publications. shoot bigger shows. send to national publications. send to bands. send to managers. get your shit out there because nobody is gonna care if you don't say anything
i stress local SO much, people have no clue. if your town has a big concert venue, you can probably get in locally if the artist is too crazy.
I remember shooting rush in an arena. it was my first big show and I was freaking out the whole time. all the photographers were old and boring. treated the show like it was any other show and the pics ended up great.
