I'm a BMW freak, and I wanna get started on learning photography and filming for making some nice footage of Bimmers.

I love to fool around with the camera on my iPhone, but it's obviously very limited. Especially when it comes to making videos, which I'm really interested in. (i have some experience in Sony Vegas and After Effects already)

I'll be posting some pics of (mostly) my car I took with my phone. Critique if you like. I'm really curious if people can appreciate them as much as I do, haha. Just keep in mind this was all on an iPhone 5, sometimes even using the filters on the camera app. (I realize I might look like pure cancer to /p/ right now, I'm sorry)

Any comments / tips will be appreciated.

Seems like you already know the limitations of your camera, which is a good step. Are you looking to upgrade you equipment to take it more seriously? or are you happy to settle for what you have available to you?

In the first photo, your colors are nice, so that's good, but the background is very very distracting, and the car to the right of the frame also reminds us that it's a very "normal" photo. Great car photography really fantasized and optimizes the environment of the car, making it seem important, and impressive (think about all those car commercials you see on winding Japanese roads at night, or on the salt flats, etc, where it seems like everything in the frame is there to support and focus the car in your mind.

Getting the environment right takes a lot more planning and effort, because you have to find a place that's supportive, but not distracting, and then actually go there, at the right time of day to have nice interesting light, but it's really worth it, as without that effort, your photos end up looking like Google Street View shots.

Yes, I am looking to 'upgrade'. In other words, getting an actual camera. Hah.
I was thinking of starting out with a used camera, so that I can get decent quality for a low price. That way it wouldn't be such a waste of money if this turns out to not be my thing.
If it grows on me I can always get a better/new camera.

Here's a recent photo I made that I really love, despite the quality.
The 'environment' thing you were speaking of is a little better with this one.

Unfortunately this is my friend's car, not mine.

A used camera is a great way to start, and you dont have to worry much about getting anything broken or "worn out" since cameras pretty much work, or they don't.

If you're looking into making videos, you might be interested in the GH line of cameras. (GH2, GH3 or GH4) as they have great video features, while not being ridiculously expensive or enormous.

That photo is also a bit distracting because of the people in the frame. The eye is drawn to them, because as a person, you want to know what other people are doing, rather than what car they are near. But it's at least a car-centric situation where the car doesn't feel like an afterthought.

Take a look at the photo I've attached (not mine) There's an environment, but it's muted. It's not important. it's just enough to give the car a space to exist in. It also serves to make one feel that the car "owns this shit" or whatever. There is enough detail that you can get the idea of the photo, but not so much that you find yourself looking all around trying to figure out "What building is he parked in front of? Are those people getting in the car? Robbing the owner? Just walking around looking for drugs? etc.

The focus is singular, and everything in the image supports the subject, and it's attitude.
