This was posted in the last one but, I'm trying to decide between the canon t5i and the Sony a6000 as a good starter digital camera, I'm still a beginner whose used to shooting film and looking to transition into digital photography. I'm looking for something that allows me to take amazing pictures as well as video since my friends and I dabble in a bit of YouTube.

The things that stand out to me about the rebel is that it has a vast variety of lenses, an articulating touch screen as well as a built in microphone jack. The only problems with it are, I enjoy traveling and carrying this shit around will get a bit annoying and that when I glanced at the sample photos taken with it, it looks a bit bland compared to the Sony.

I was hoping maybe somone could help me out a bit. While I have basically a $700 price limit I'm still open to more recommendations from you guys, some one recommended the canon eso m but I wasn't sure which one and why

is a tokina 11-16 really the only reasonably affordable option for a wide angle lens for crop cameras?

Being fast is not important to me I shoot everything at like f/9

the a6000 takes really really good video ever since they got the x-avcs update.

The canon's can probably do slightly better with magic lantern and raw video but keep in mind that's roughly 4x the work in post pro

What ultrawide zoom does /p/ prefer for FX Nikon's? 14-24 is out of my budget, so I'm considering the 16-35/4, the 17-35/2.8, the Tamron 15-30/2.8, and the budget model Tokina 16-28/2.8.

There's another option, which is the Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 EX. I'm actually a huge fan of that lens, it's wider and longer than the Tokina and has much, much better coatings. Overall though, you can't really go wrong with either. There's also a new Tokina 11-20 coming out but I have no information on it.

Tamron 15-30 seems pretty awesome. Only problem is nofilterslol

For the price, the Tokina is really actually very nice. But also no filters, and optically the worst of the bunch.

Nikon 16-35 is increasingly less attractive with some of the newer models coming out, but I'd choose that over the Tokina, especially if you want to be able to use regular filters.

Yeah, I was initially using my phone but it's kinda old (Galaxy S2) and the quality isn't as good as the newer ones.

The real question is, do you want to expand on your existing niche of toys, like taking trips, shooting landscape, wildlife or heading downtown and shoot street and people?
There are lots of old but still very good cameras on ebay, like the Canon 40D or the Nikon D90.
You can get them cheap, with kit lens you can use for lots of stuff, including shooting toys. You might have additional budget left for a couple of reading lamps to illuminate your studio scene.

Can I use a front mounted tele extender on my 55-250 stm? I've heard the weight can cause problems with some lenses but the stm oone has a non rotating front element so idk. Alternatively which backmounting TCs support efs lenses?

Front adapters are usually cheap chinese shit. But think about it, the optical formula was developed for the original lens, if you put something in front or in the back you introduce extra elements in the formula, mostly fucking up your IQ.
There are matched rear adapters but not every manufacturer makes them. Pentax is one who makes them and the TCs mostly do little to no harm to IQ with Pentax A,F,FA,DA and D-FA series lenses. I don't know about Canon but seeing they have a huge market for their longer lenses I doubt they make matched TCs or TCs in general.

Those matched Pentax converters were from the manual-focus era. They weren't matched so much as just had a limited number of lenses they were compatible with because they have elements that protrude into the back of the attached lens, usually there were a couple of telephotos they'd work with, and there were other teleconverters that weren't quite as good optically, but had no protruding elements, and so were compatible with anything. There's just one Pentax converter in production now, the HD 1.4x, which isn't matched and works with anything, except some wide-angle lenses.

But despite being a Pentax guy, I gotta say, come on, step up your shilling game here. Of course Canikon have teleconverters. Both of them have 1.4x and 2x models, Nikon has a 1.7x model, too. They aren't, of course, magic, you always lose something with a converter, but they are very good. And one of the big markets for them is the same people who buy those enormous trench-mortar supertelephotos. If you're dropping ten grand on a 400/2.8, well sure Canikon would love it if you dropped another ten grand on a 600/4, but they know that a lot of people either can't afford to buy more than one of those lenses, or just can't carry more than one of the giant things, so they'll happily sell you a converter to make one lens do both jobs.

I think Canon and/or Nikon sell or have sold lenses that come with converters matched to that specific model of lens, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

I doubt I'll be using it for anything else soon. I might get the urge down the line though. As far as the Canon 40D and Nikon D90: you are talking about just buying the bodies and getting the kit lens from elsewhere, right?

From reading the wiki, I guess the lens size I would need would be: "Wide-angle to small-telephoto zoom lens. ~15-130mm" ? Any particularly good place to pick one up?

And the tabletop kits I'm looking at getting already have little lamps, but from what I read their quality varies. Maybe I'll replace them down the line.

My sister got into it to take photos/videos of clothes and fashion stuff, like for youtube. So I think she might appreciate some more gear. Since it's a gift, I don't mind paying a lot of money for something insignificant, but a perk.

Preferably I want to start of with a prime ranging from 28-35mm, to improve my photography, I've also heard they're usually better quality than kit lenses.

Originally I was going to get the a6000 with the kit lens, but since then I've heard the kit lens isn't great (and I can't afford a good prime to go with it) so I'm considering getting a Fujifilm xe2 with a fujinon 35mm 1.4f prime to start of with. This is within budget.

Is this a good choice for the money, advice would be much appreciated.

As someone who owns an X-E2 and an xf 35, I can tell you, it's a great combo. You're left with a 50mm field of view after the crop factor, but I assume you know that.

The image quality from the X-E2 is dramatically better than your EOS-M especially if you do any editing in raw. The AF is better, the ergonomics are better, the support from Fuji is better.

The only reason to look elsewhere is if video is important to you. Fuji hasn't managed to solve the video issue with their sensors.

Superzooms are usually for travel where you don't want to take many lenses and changing lenses is too unwieldy. They are bad on both ends, wide and tele, and even in the middle they are no better than average. These type of lenses are generally worse than kit lenses and cost more.
You can do a lot with the simple kit lens.

It depends on your usage. The 35 is smaller, and has a brighter max aperture, but I've found that the image quality is pretty much the same on both, and in my usage, the kit lens focuses faster and more reliably. The 35mm is more reliable after recent firmware updates (And the X-E2 is rumored to be getting another big AF update before the end of the year which should affect the performance of the 35) but for Fuji, the 18-55 is a home run. It all comes down to size and your preference for zoom or prime.

You can't go wrong, between them, however. Don't stress. Pick what makes the most sense to you and be confident.

I must admit the 1.4f aperture is the major attraction, plus I believe having a fixed length will better my skills, as I'll only have one range to deal with. So I think I may choose the 35mm.

I also had a look at the XF 27mm 2.8f; buying this lens would save me about £100, what do you think of this lens compared to the kit and 35mm?

(Before buying i'll probably experiment on my current kit lens with both 27 and 35mm ranges and see which I prefer)

Trying on your current lens is a good idea. The 27mm is a great lens. You lose a fast maximum aperture, but the XTrans sensor handles high ISO well, so it shouldn't be a HUGE issue. I haven't used the 27 myself, but from what I've read, I believe it loses a little bit in terms of image quality, but let's be honest, there really isn't a lens available today that isn't sharp and nice enough to take great photos. You wouldn't be unhappy with it for the image quality, certainly.

Looking at the Iumix G series around 12-16mp the stats Iook horribIe and af and frame per second are so bad. The Ienses aren't that great and adapters make af unusabIe and Iower quaIity than on the units they are intended to mount to.

An entry level one like a Rebel, or D3000 is rated to about 75,000 actuations. A pro body like a 1Dx or D4 is rated at about 200,000, but many live beyond that.

Once again your X-trans layer doesn't affect noise, only moire and other pattern related imaging defects.

I was originally sold on the fuji for its ergonomics and price/value but I've read on here that it produces shitty quality RAW files. Is this true?

I have the K-3, so far it is a very-very good camera. Has much more ease of use. For example if you leave the SR on it senses that you are panning and it switches off the SR. You have to turn it off manually on the K-5 not to mess with your photos. Also more pickles, AA filter can be turned off or on, even better ISO performance, focus motor is stronger so screwdrive focus is much faster. AF sensor is much more precise.
Get the K-3.

PN does SLIGHTLY better than lightroom because it lets you remove the "baked in" noise reduction in the file, but it's much WORSE when it comes to other areas, especially color.

Lightroom does 99% as well with RAF now as it does with anything else, and they're still improving it.

Not a photographer, just interested in taking pictures of the moon. Figure one of those bridge cameras with 50x zoom and 1000mm focal lenght are what I'd be best off with.
Which one though? I did some research but I have no clue what features mean what.
According to the wiki, I should just go with latest powershot (sx60) but I've had some Fuji's recommended over Canon.

Also, fiance's birthday is coming up at the end of October and looking to get her a new camera as a gift.
She used to be into photography before she met me but let it slide by the wayside, about 6 years ago.
I'm hoping that once I get whatever bridge camera she'll get jealous of my dope moon pictures and want to get back into it.
I figured I'd get a canon rebel or w/e but apparently these mirrorless boxes are hot shit, so what kind of entry/amateur camera should I get for her?
DSLR or Mirrorless?

Figure I'd go with entry level so if she ends up not really getting back into it, it won't be a big deal.

tl;dr What Bridge camera and what dslr/mirrorless for getting back into photography?

Most zoom currently is Nikon P900, I think. It won't take very high-end pictures, but I guess it can shoot moon okay.

DSLR or mirrorless is a matter of taste. Just stick an amazing lens on it and it'll be fine.

I use my K-3 with an oldie but goodie manual focus 400mm Sigma. Last nights Mun shot.

Also as was said before, don't buy bridge or superzoom. Any cheap entry DSLR with an old manual tele lens and a tripod is capable of capturing a nice astro photo.

I've a 1000D that I've used for 3 solid years quite regularly, astrophotography & landscapes mainly, the odd general social event.

I'm soon to be upgrading, my views are that the 760D will be enough of a upgrade to last for another 3 years for what I will use it, possibly moving onto some professional training too, rather self teaching.

it wouldn't really be any better. A bridge camera is a PnS, just in a bigger body and with a longer zoom on it.
the bare-minimum setup for ebay product shots is a camera on a tripod and lots of light. Give those tiny PnS sensors bright light and they'll do alright. But I would vote for a PnS over a bridge, yow won't get anything except a bulkier camera.

You can use your smartphone or anything to photograph the stage when it's well lit by the stage lighting.

For the audience, your friends and everything else that isn't so well-lit, you can either piss everyone off with a powerful flash / LED light, or use a rented modern full frame camera with a fast prime lens.

It's a cheap MILC from 2011. Noted in reviews even back then for noise and poor low light performance.

I haven't touched this camera ever, but I'd guess that it is not the right camera for this, unless your concerts are mostly happening outdoors in broad daylight.

For some other purposes and depending on the price, it might be a good deal. I don't know this camera personally.

Again, you'd probably want to mostly shoot in good daylight or with decent external lighting, as with all cameras that were noted to have a poor sensor in 2011 already.

Depends on what lens you are using, what you're shooting, and more.

It should still be better than most smartphones and point & shoots that most people are working with.

I'd say: Stick a good lens on it, and it should feel like a pretty good device.

I'm a field oriented person, I go out innawoods and typically do things. I want to pick up a DSLR both to photo these things and other wacky shenangians that come up in my life (star trails, rocks and cat pictures man).

No, you still can. A larger aperture lens or a body with cleaner high-ISO capabilities will just make it easier. The main thing you'll have trouble with is stars, if you want them to not trail. If you want star trails, or don't care about them, you'll be fine. The tripod is the most important thing for this, if you don't have one already, drop the money on a decent one, it's worth it. Get a remote release too (it's just a button on a wire, not expensive) so that you don't bump the camera hitting the shutter button. Or just use the self-timer.

tiny sensors. Noisy, especially at high ISOs. Something like 1600, which will be pretty clean on a crop DSLR, will be hopelessly noisy on a 1/2.3" sensor, with poor dynamic range.
big zoom ratio = slow aperture, problems with distortion, softness and CA, especially at the ends. Wide-angle end often has distortion and problems with the edges, long end tends to be just plain soft. Slow aperture exacerbates the sensor's poor sensitivity in anything other than bright sunlight.
Inability to shoot RAW on many models.
God help you if you ever need to focus manually - and a camera like this most definitely does not have infallible autofocus.

basically a superzoom or bridge camera gives you all the image quality of a point-n-shoot with all the size of a DSLR. They're PnS cameras made to look like a DSLR for people who just want to look like they have a fancy camera without actually having a fancy camera.

Also rethink your zoom range requirement. You need the long end less than you'd think. if you do need it, it's worth having a proper interchangeable lens camera so you can put a lens that's optimized for what it does on it.

if you want a DSLR, get a K-50 amd a standard zoom to put on it, Pentax has several weather-sealed ones. If it absolutely must be smaller than that, get the Olympus the other anon mentioned.

I'm not trying to look like I have a fancy camera.

The more I research into this lens, the more I can see why.

That little fucker is like the definition of compactness itself.
The Lens hood is so ridiculously small due to the way it's shaped.

And yet despite the small hood, there is still room inside the hood for a UV filter or an ND filter.

And one more thing, apparently, the lens cap can still be inserted on to of the hood + filter.
And apparently I can place a 2nd filter on top of the lens hood if have a smaller filter that has alternative diameter.

The thing has two filter diameters as result of this, 49mm and 40,5mm.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone use two filters before, but it's apparently capable of this if you ever need that for whatever reason.

And still remain super compact.

I'm shooting a mixed indoor and outdoor event on Saturday mid-day (not paid or anything, I'm just part of the organization running the event) and currently I only have 18-55mm and 75-300mm kit lenses with my Canon T5 crop sensor.

I'm looking at getting a wide-angle prime lens for the event, and generally just to have as the first addition to my collection. I'm almost certainly going to get a nifty fifty, but am curious to hear other suggestions. My only concern with the lens is that on my 1.6x crop sensor, the 50mm becomes effectively an 80mm and it seems like that will put me farther from my subjects than I want to be.

Interested to hear the opinions of people who have shot similar events.

80mm is fine for portraits of individuals.

It will be pretty useless for group shots though, and problematic in more narrow indoor spaces.

You should generally spend more on lenses than on bodies. They remain useful longer, and so far have retained their value far better overall than bodies (if you sell it later).

Never mind that average or slightly below average IL camera+ good lens almost always looks better than average or slightly below average lens with good IL camera.

i'll be visiting B&H this week to check out gear and feel how it handles.

ahead of my trip i'm hoping you guys can recommend specs I should be looking for in a camera and lenses. one question i'm struggling with is APS-C vs. full-frame. my understanding is that i can get cheaper lenses for working with APS-C than full-frame, and the advantages of full-frame aren't very important over APS-C. however, as I want to take night sky pictures, i've heard that full-frame is better with high ISO, which i'll be using for astrophotography.

thoughts? anyone want to recommend bodies and lenses? thanks for any help.

get an eos m kit for really cheap, you might be able to find a kit for an 18-55stm or 22mm stm kit lens attached for under 200-300. for around 500 bucks you can get an eos m adapter, eos m, 22mm, 18-55, 32gb memory card, and 50mm stm, which is a lot of kit for really low. Or get a m2, autofocus speeds aren't as bad as most people believe, and the stm focus while shooting video is really good, plus magic lantern for shooting video is handy.

you still look through the single lens, so technically it's still a DSLR.

I think mirrorless is a bit of a misnomer and should be split clearly into 2 groups, those with a viewfinder that represents exactly what the main lens sees and those that rely on an external screen.

With moore's law in full swing screens and sensors are only going to get ridiculously better to the point of whether it's an optical path or not becomes a moot point.

The mirror is going to become as antiquated as a film advance lever, which some guys like, so whatever makes you happy man :)

If the sun is the focal point of the image, like when you're shooing an eclipse, a piece of welder's glass will usually do a decent job.

E-mount has 2 classes of lenses.
One only works for APS-C crop mode. The other works for both APS-C and Full Frame.

For example if you buy the FE 28mm f/2 lens, it'll work as a 42mm equivalent lens on your A6000.
But if you ever upgrade from A6000 to some Full Frame camera later, you will be able to use that same lens as 28mm.

Cameras are shaped the way they are to accommodate what's inside of them (film/ sensor) and the way that light has to travel around inside of them to produce a photo. They are considered tools first, so your personal comfort isn't really taken much into account. If it's a problem that bothers you though, you should look into rangefinder style cameras with their viewfinder over to the left side of the camera. This lets your nose sit beside the camera, rather than smooshed into the screen.

Mostly, people just don't want goofy looking cameras.

Just look for an M42 adapter, you can get one for under 10USD on Amazon.

If that focal length fits your needs I'd also look into the regular Canon 50mm 1.8.

the fisheye is on discount for 220e but I'm afraid of getting tired of it quickly

The 55-210 kit lens is fine (nothing great, just the usual entry level to midrange zoom lens), the 18-50 kit lens is a bit deficient but, eh, people used worse - maybe it is okay for you?

The Sigma 18 / 30 / 60mm primes should also be cheap. If you can live with that they have center PDAF only, the 30 and 60mm especially are quite nice lenses.

Otherwise, you actually probably stick either E-mount full frame on this camera. A lot of good glass and relatively many have pretty normal pricing for such glass, but it just costs quite a bit, for the most part.

You can also use Canon EF lenses, or older MF lenses with an adapter.

Many other different-shaped cameras have existed, too.

Besides, the flat panels at the back of pretty much all cameras are also a new thing since pretty much all new cameras went digital. Even if you couldn't use a viewfinder (which also works well for most people), you could still use that.

A fisheye is rather gimmicky, I only use mine in a club. I imagine it distorting everything a little too much for landscape and you won't be able to shoot much wildlife with it. I'm going for a hiking trip to the alps for a couple of days this week. I'll take my fisheye with me and test it out a little, I hope I'll remember to post the results for you.

I have the Tamron 70-300mm, it's a decent lens, you can enjoy it for some time and I'd be hard pressed to find anything wrong about it considering its price but it's nowhere near a professionnal lens, it's a bit soft and chromatic aberations are everywhere.
As for the samyang, I'm presently considering buying the 12mm f2.8, I've looked at the 8mm but I believe it will only fit aps-c sensors and if ever I wish to upgrade my camera it will be a lost, that and it's a bit slow for my taste.
All in all, both are good lens, you will have lot of fun before having to upgrade them but you WILL have to upgrade sooner or later.

Yeah, the Tamron seems great for the price (300e) although a lot of reviews suggest it would work better as a 70-200mm. Not really worried about upgrading quite yet, I'm still a beginner and I think my 350D will serve me well for at least 2-3 years. Maybe then I'll invest in higher quality gear and possible full frame.

consumer electronics don't work the way movies do. They don't announce them a year in advance. You'll know about a week before they hit shelves, maybe. If they told you now that the a7000 was going to come out for Christmas, nobody would buy the stock they have built up of the a6000

Keep in mind what you're buying; a compact mirrorless. This isn't a flagship DSLR, and its not even a flagship mirrorless so you can put money on the idea that there wont be any groundbreaking new tech inside of it. I say go for the a6000 and start taking pictures asap as opposed to waiting for vapor hardware and missing all sorts of photo ops

If you're travelling and you're not shooting sports or ultra fast action, there's no reason to not go Fuji.

Top image quality in the aps-c format. Very sturdy bodies. Good looking cameras. Great shooting experience.

Even a xpro1 is nice. Just got one with less than 300 shots because the guy couldn't adapt the his diopeters and it's a bargain.

I have and have had plenty cameras but i can't recommend enough a fuji camera with XF lenses.

You can save money with a cheaper body like the xpro1 or the xe2 and get a couple lenses for your trip. The 18mm is tiny and although not as sharp in the corners It's still way above average optically, besides It's very fun and versatile.

Then you have slightly bigger but still smaller than canikon lenses that have way better quality. Sharper, less CA, distortion etc.

I'd be an happy traveller with a 18mm and a 35\56mm on a xpro1. And I am.

The 18-55mm kit is amazing and you can score good deals on the body+zoom bundle. Add the 90mm or the 55-200mm and you're golden.

Then you have other speciality lenses In case you need. The 14mm which is beautiful and all legacy lenses that you can adapt.

All in all, have fun and a good trip.

Deal with the fact that you bought a camera with a super small sensor which is nearly impossible to find true wide-angle lenses for? The widest equvalent I've seen is I think 16mm, which, granted, is pretty wide, but you won't be getting a 180 degree FOV on M4/3

it seems like the 6d is the obvious answer except for the poor autofocus. is it that much of a step down or is it more than good enough for the majority of situations?

85-90mm is the usual portait lens.

Surely some people also do portraits on 50mm or 120mm... but 85-90mm is the typical suggestion.

Also, why not get both? 50mm lenses are dirt cheap. About $100-400 for a decent one.

I bought a P0 ballhead just a few weeks ago, and was a bit pissed at the no plate thing.
But the that is still available in naked format without any kind of quick release for a lot cheaper, so I got a Giottos Arca-style QR and a couple of plates for less than the difference.
The one I got is a lot longer as well, so it's actually a better fit for how I use it.

The guy didn't specified pricing nor IQ.
There's the Voigtlander Heliar 40mm with VME close focus adapter, but 60mm would be too long for general purposes.
