Just starting to get into photography.

Are Iight room and photo shop the only major editors out? Everything else looks unprofessional and Iimited.

ls there a minimum resoIution or pixeI density you guys Iook for? Are there any Iarge set backs to using a cheap CeIeron Iaptop at 1364 x 1764 or whatever?

and is there a superior OS and for what reason? Don't want to start on the one with Iess features, etc.

GIMP is good for basic stuff, but Adobe is the industry standard so 99% of people just use that. There are thousands of tutorials on the interwebs, so I´d just go with those.

Panel type is (to me) more important that resolution. Idk what my density is, I use a 13inch Macbook Pro which is 1280x800 for all of my edits.

Mac and Windows are pretty much on par if we´re only talking about using Photoshop/Lightroom. I don´t think Adobe supports Linux.

If your monitor is decent you should be fine. There is a mile long list of things to worry about before you care about your monitor.

Basically, they're only important with printing. For digital display, you need to check multiple screens anyway (don't bother with expensive calibration stuff, your audience won't be using calibrated monitors to look at your pictures--as for printing, proof print images to see what shifts there are and adapt your processing to compensate, which you have to do with calibrated monitors too).

Anyway, use what you have and spend that money on like a decent tripod, a subscription to lynda, peterson's understanding exposure, or going some place to take pictures.

Just use lr and ps...there is open/freeware out there, but it suffers from the same issues as most programs developed with that model: lacks features/functionality, annoyingly archaic processes to get shit done, and a general lack of polish. Plus you can legit get lr and ps for $10/month.

Different guy here but just because something is the standard is that the reason most people use it?

Is it also the best currently? Haven't been using LF but hear that it's great for work flow speed and batch work.

You have to carry extra lenses and gear for both, so why does it really matter? Either camera would be on a sling over the shoulder. The size has yet to be an advantage anywhere since most of the places don't really care as long as you don't have a gray lens (no matter what the brand, they see those and just say no every time).

Plus there's focus speed. Went back to the full size last weekend and it was a night and day speed difference. Didn't realize how important it was until getting it back.

Is there any reason to keep furthering this fad or is it better to stick with a full size cam?

Homie, rarely are standards the best. That's not how that shit works.

That said, Ps+Lr is generally the best solution for most photographers. The integration gained from using programs that are made specifically to work with each other provides massive gains in workflow efficiency. The fact that these are professionally developed also means that you've a much, much better UI than you see with free alternatives (cheaper alternatives like Corel Draw aren't bad, but you lose out the integration and a few of the more powerful features of Ps).

You can get awesome results using the likes of ACR, DarkTable, RAWtherapee, and GIMP, but it's easier to get them with Lr+Ps. You've got a billion actions out there that are developed, a billion websites telling you how to do things, etc. It's a standard as much because the pairing is good as there is inertia from all of the extant support and knowledge about how to implement and use.

It's a pay with your money or pay with your time kinda choice. I do think it's worthwhile for amateurs to see if what they're doing can be done as well on GIMP and Rawtherapee as it can in PS and LR though, both because if you aren't a pro making money off this then your time is worth less money, and because you're likely to be doing less involved image manipulation. If you are making money on it, and time IS money, use whatever you're used to/makes your life easier.

if you really want a small and light system, you can do it with mirrorless, and have something that's better to a worthwhile extent than a PnS. You do have to give something up to do that though. A Sony A7 is never going to be a small system just cause it's full frame, and that means you need a bigger lens, you have to do m4/3 or something to be small. If small size is less important to you, you might as well get an SLR unless you really love EVFs.

Actually, LR is a slow piece of shit software.

Sure, you can get a decent amount of work done with its sliders, but that doesn't stop it from being a slow piece of shit, like Adobe often makes them.

In most instances, I'd call working with Darktable actually faster, even if you don't have entirely all of LR's features yet.

PS may or may not be more useful than Krita or Gimp or Corel or Affinity or whatever depending on what 3rd party plugins and other features you use. Certainly, there are far more than the basics in all of these.

D750 is probably the better deal with its better AF and price.

And the A7R II and D810 are nicer devices.

Pretty much, yes.

And I really recommend starting with Lightroom.

You don't need much resolution to view/edit your photographs, but it is nice to have enough screen space for controls.
It's also very nice to have a matte screen, unfortunately most laptops come with glossy screens now.

You do need a powerful CPU.
And a fast hard drive or SSD definitely helps too.

There are many samples readily available online. Go to the flickr pools.

One is for head shots, and one is for full body shots. They aren't really interchangeable. Which are you doing? What lens better compliments the lenses you already have?

Anyhow, it's pretty damn near certain that the 85mm will have better image quality overall than a 24-70mm you can get when you trade that 85mm.

But if you can't really use the lens in the locations you're always shooting in, you will probably need another lens, sure.

That said, isn't a 50mm or 35mm or even 24mm cheap enough to simply buy without trading anything in? You should have sufficient time to swap lenses.

There is also darktable, a software very similar to Adobe's Lightroom and Apple's Aperture, available for Linux and Mac OS X.
It is free and open source, yet has only few shortcomings compared to Lightroom.

This. 50mm for low light and bokeh. 24mm for tighter spaces and wider angles that you can get more people in but really the 50mm would be the better of the two for what you're doing.

I think first of all, you need lighting. Really, if you want cheap yet nice, you need light.

Cheapest are course 5500k bulbs that screw into existing sockets and improvised diffusers, but you're going to spend some of your time getting those right... maybe just spend some one Yongnuo flashes or led panels and a bunch of diffusers made from densely woven fabric or plastic.

The body won't matter so much as long as it's not positively ancient or fixed lens with the wrong lens.
But (without me being able to tell how small this is) you might need a lens that can do like 1:3 to 1:1... macro or "macro". Older manual lens should be fine, though. You could also use a setup with a zoom lens and an achromat close-up lens to the same effect, but beware of the shallow depth of field you might get if you can't close your aperture much (very bright light is better especially with an achromat).

And you might quite likely need a tripod.

This. You'll notice it more in cameras that have a higher frames per second count. If you're around 3-5 it's pretty good but if you're closer to 8-9+ a second you will notice it for sure.

If you're on a budget you could just go 90mb/second instead of 30mb/second and that should do fine.

How much are you guys dropping on cleanings and how often?

This place around here (only place for about 40 km ) does 80 for the unit if not fool frame. 120 fool frame. 30-50 per regular lens. 70-90 for weather sealed. 120+ for large zoom and high shutter speed large lenses. Is this good or bad/

Hear a ton of horror stories about sending it in any place that isn't the manufacturer.

What about dust in lenses that aren't sealed properly?

Different guy here but got a 17 55 2.8 for 240 near brand new on Amerzon 3 weeks ago. Guy had it low because dust was inside. Locally it was 60 to clean but they did the body too.

Is there a way to save money on getting dust out of the lens? In this case it was great though since they got both for 60.

I still doubt any dust, let alone a fly, can enter my 120-300 which has internal focusing and internal zoom (ie: both the front and rear elements are fixed in place).

I like the Canon G9 but it's sensor is rather small and I'm not too fond of the pop-up flash and moveable screen of the later models.

There have been a few out there, but they tend to be enormous. Bigger sensor = bigger lens, and with the whole package being bigger it better have a good grip for ergonomics too. The closest thing to what you want is a Sony a6000, and even committed Sonyfriends recognize that the pancake kit lens is optically worse than Hitler.

You're honestly way better off with a moderate sensor, or if you must have APS-C, going with a prime fixed lens.

I bought some cheap filters from China and they came in these boxes, which I decided I could use as Silica gel containers. I just needed to poke some holes with some nails.

Do you think this will work out okay in my camera bag, or is there a better solution?

I have a whole Kilogram of Silica Gel leftover, so I can fill up my bag with this stuff quite a lot.

It takes some practice, and you will obviously never be as fast as AF, but it's certainly doable. I mainly use focus magnification, peaking can be misleading sometimes.
Only speaking from experience up to 300mm (on APS-C) though, don't know if it's any different for longer focal lengths.

where i live, it's humid enough that taking your camera out of the bag can cause condensation to occur, sometimes immediately. one you get over that hurtle to where the lens isn't fogged, you want it to be dried quickly putting it back in the bag to prevent moisture related problems. it's mostly an early morning problem, but that's often the best time to go out and shoot.

Understandable that you want to prevent that condensation when you shoot. But with the lens dry for most of the day and even dry all the time when not taken outdoors in the morning, I don't think you'd get fungus in this situation..

You easily have enough holes, I think.

Cloth is better in general. The point is that it won't trap moisture and let any significant amount of fungus grow. Our atmosphere generally is a water-sucker when it's not raining or otherwise condensing water.

But with fresh silica gel you might actually want to create an almost or entirely airtight space. It's also what you'd probably want to do as a precaution in monsoon / tropical rainforest climates or such.

Needed something smaller than my 7D... I like to have my camera with me whereever I go, but lately the 7D got left ind it's case more and more. Got sick of the weight for when I'm just out with friends or being on the street.
Opportunity came (being a poorfag), so I "bought" a G1X from a friend for 40-50 worth of weed.
Yeah, I know, it's a G1X. AF sucks and the viewfinder sucks even more. Nevertheless, IQ is quite nice (sensor is bigger than MFT, although that doesn't mean much) and I really enjoy the flippy-screen.
Never shot anything smaller than DSLR-sized cameras in all my life, so this is quite new to me.
Got home about an hour ago and immediatly compared it to my 7D - and jeez, this thing is so fucking small. It also weighs two pounds less than my 7D with the 17-40.
Anyway. Curious to see what this little fucker can do.

I made a desiccator for my lenses from a transparent plastic container (from Obi) and a bag of Tesco brand desiccant. I put my lenses in the box whenever I don't use it for longer than a few days, or when I was shooting in rain.
That silica gel method is actually better since you can regenerate it when it gets saturated.

Look for a used 7d if you're going Canon crop, APSC quality will be the same but you get a better body, and you'll find them used for rebel-tier price. Just look for cameras with less than 30k actuations.

I own one with about 120k, still going like new.
With the saved money, get a Sigma 18-35 1.8

The cons of this is that the kit will be heavy. You're looking at almost 2kg (4.4lbs) between lens and camera, but controls are very well laid out and the lens is a joy to handle. That lens is also terrific for video shooting and it would feel unbalanced on a mirrorless body.

saving for my first real purchase since ive just been using an old film rangefinder. These are the top two and i like to get peoples opinions.

Yes, a lens that can work on full frame... the 18-35 doesn't. I have one and it's kinda decent on FF at 35mm, but anywhere else it's completely unusable.
On FF you want a Tamron 15-30 2.8.

The 24-105 is very mediocre, too.

an A6K would be better overall, but you would have to know what you're getting yourself into as far as mirror-less as a system and proper rigging for getting good video out of your camera.(People will tell you to get a lens with IS for video, but in reality you don't need it if you have a good shoulder rig and aren't literally handholding the camera like a lot of people on this board do)

Acquired the 35mm f1.4 fuji lens in perfect condition with a UV filter at an estate sale. I didn't buy into the motor noise being "too loud" like many of the reviews said, but damn they were right. I mean it's livable but it does make quite the racket.

The 60mm is probably the best resolving cheap lens for APS-C, and it's worth taking a few steps backwards to use this one.

Also maybe get the 2 lens kit for the a6000, because the 55-210 is also quite good. You can even do decent macro with that if you stick a Marumi close-up achromat on it, or use an extension tube.

The 28/2.8 is supposed to be wicked sharp. The 50/1.8D feels like dildos, but is going to be sharper than the AI lenses. The 35/2 is an alright piece of kit. The 180/2.8 is pretty sharp. The series E lenses are cheap, sharp, and built just as well as the AIs lenses were. See Matthew Durr's reviews for that. You cant really go wrong with anything from that era, other than the zooms and the 24/2.8.

No. I should have stated it in a different way: If you put midrange or high end glass on both, the A6000 easily comes out on top in terms of image quality.

It just doesn't show much with the Sony's worse kit lens vs the XE2's better kit lens.

Someone stole my camera bag, with my camera, lenses, flash, etc. in it. Fortunately, I had the camera and lenses insured, and my claim handler told me they'd have a check for around $2,400 headed my way.

This gives me a chance to start over. Since I'm not shooting sports anymore at my new job, I don't really need a long telephoto lens - at least not so much that I have to buy a cheap one right away instead of waiting to buy one I'll actually like. I also learned that a costly wide-angle lens isn't one of my top priorities. And I do know I want a macro lens. I've wanted one for a while, and just never got around to buying one.

There are a couple of groups of lenses I'm thinking about getting, and they cost about the same. I'm looking at the 50mm f/1.4 and 105mm f/2.8 macro, or the 35mm and 85mm f/1.8s and 60mm f/2.8 macro (all Nikon). There's only a difference of $17 between the two groups, and either way before sales tax it's a little more than half of the insurance payment. I'm not sure which to get.

The other big question is do I go with a D3100, which I'm already familiar with and is cheap enough to let me fit other stuff in the budget, or do I spring for a higher end body (D7000, most likely)?

Those are both Sony cameras, and the A6000 clearly has the better and bigger sensor than the RX100 I-III. But the RX100 I-III have really quite good Zeiss 24-100mm equivalent fixed lenses, and that makes a huge difference to the A6000's really pretty entry-level SEL-P1650.

It gets better if you compare it with the second kit lens, the 55-210mm. But even then, I usually prefer the RX100's glass in terms of IQ.

So basically, stick actually good glass on the A6000 and it will be better. Stick with the kit lens, and the XE2 or even the RX100 (certainly the RX100 IV) probably has an advantage.

There isn't much point in stepping up from a D3x00 to a D5x00. A D7x00 gets you some worthwhile upgrades though - dual control wheels, a proper pentaprism, compatibility with screw-drive and manual lenses. I think those are worth it, myself.

I'm not a Nikon shooter so I can't really speak to individual lens models, but I will say that personally I prefer ~100mm for a macro lens rather than ~50mm. The extra distance comes in handy, either for things that you can't quite get close enough to (a skittish bug, a trinket in a museum display case) or for the common situation where you could get close, but then wouldn't be able to light the subject with the front element millimeters away.

remember to consider buying used, which saves money, and see if third-party makers have comparable lenses.

KEH does ship internationally. I just bought a Nikon F2 from them, $79 for the body and $4 for an elevated shutter release. And then 55 bleeding dollors for shipping. And then a further 30 yurobucks for VAT at the customs.

So all in all it came out to ~$162. Therefore most likely not the nicest way to purchase a K1000 (meme camera), but adequate for swell things like a F2 with a "shutter curtain wrinkle". Still worth it, local prices considered.

Instead get yourself a Nikon F-501 or some such piece of eighties prosumer gear. Those'll be like 20€ w/ kitlens. Vertical overlapping-alloy-lamel shutter, 1/2000 speed, autoexposure, nice meter reading in the finder, about equivalent to a K1000 if you stay off auto. You'll want to buy about 100€ worth of Eneloop cells for them though, they eat batteries unlike any other -- and there's no bloody rewind either.

Srsly y'all we gotta update the meme student camera. Prices are way out of control.

what's the best way to get the most shots out of a battery on mirrorless systems? the fuji xt-1 specifically.

i have it set to evf-only + eye sensor, and switch the camera off right after taking a shot. i don't get more than 250 shots out of the official fuji batteries. this sucks when shooting events or when i'm on the road. also, looking for a reliable multi battery charger! thanks /p/ros

Typically, moar battery in a grip is just the answer.

Maybe you can also turn off pre-focus, reduce the various display's brightness, and stuff like that, but I don't actually know your camera too well.

Grab any cheap Chinese one. There are no very clever chargers for proprietary camera battery systems, but the Chinese wall chargers or whatever do their job okay.

GH4 has a CISPA rating of 500 shots even with the stock battery, and you can get a grip, too.

The much recommended A6000 has 300 shots, but you can double that in a battery grip as well.

This is certainly not as good as a DSLR, but it should not really be a huge problem, either. Additional batteries are only like 45g, too.

I shot fire spinners this weekend and got about 600 shots before switching batteries on my x-t1. Maybe you had a bad battery?

The mirror apparently restricts the useful PDAF area, makes the flange focal distance longer (adaptation of legacy lenses, eh), gets in the way of fast burst shooting / video, and more.

Apart from that, Sony's software and CDAF also is pretty good anyways.

The A6000, A7* and GH4 and such are immensely popular with their respective audiences.

If anything, DSLR are getting their market share eroded pretty badly.

Let's also note that smartphones are mirrorless too and will almost certainly remain so, even if probably interchangeable lenses are not on the plan... and that will be the imaging device of the masses.

$1000 will get you a wide variety of cameras. It's my own personal conviction that new bodies are a waste of money. Buy a last generation used camera body and spent the remainder on good lenses.

You can pick up a used Fujifilm XE1 for $300, for instance, and spend the remaining $700 on a few Fuji lenses, or a fuckload of old manual focus lenses that you can adapt easily and regularly.

Get a good body and a single standard prime, and nothing else until you feel severely limited.
For that money, your best options are a Nikon D7200 and a 35mm prime if you want a DSLR, a Fuji XE-1 and any prime that you find appropriate (they're all excellent) if you want mirrorless, or a Fuji x100t if you want something really solid and don't feel the need for interchangeable lenses.

Promaster actually makes one new, the 2500PK. It's a K1000 with a different name on it and a 1/2000 speed, and, being new, it's too expensive for what it is (I've seen it for like 200 bucks US, with a generic 50/1.7)

I'd just get that ME super that you found, since some of that money is buying you the nicer f/1.4 lens instead of the common and not quite as good f/2.

keh is your best bet, and then there's craigslist and ebay. they all have their drawbacks and advantages.

keh is the most reliable, their stuff is priced fairly and comes with a warranty. you might pay a little more through keh than the other two (you also might pay less).

craigslist has the chance of the lucky creampuff, wherein some old fucker dies and you can find their mint 80's gear for insanely cheap. you also get some haggle as a buyer, since the seller is already getting the best return by keeping it private.

ebay has the widest selection and you'll probably be able to find exactly what you want. there's no warranty, and sometimes prices are fucking absurd due to the nature of bidding.

there are also photography forums, which are typically a gamble.

Went to my state fair on Friday, forgot to charge up my battery, had 46% to start the day at 11am. I only use the eyepiece and my lens was manual only, 680 RAW shots later, 11pm, I headed home with 12% remaining on the battery. I am using a Sony OE battery and have the camera set to power down after 2 minutes.
Plenty of juice, what do these people do with their camera's to always run the juice down so quick?

WB and saturation and everything else is better edited on your computer.

I don't think the DoF effect from a cheap camera's aperture will matter, never mind that on this nearly flat surface that is a CRT screen you might as well just blur the image in post to pretty much the same effect. Same for a simulation of a cheap vignetting lens.

And there's only so much you can do with shutter speed, too. You can record the scanline / a "flickering" screen... but that is more ugly than interesting IMO.

Maybe I'm missing something?

That is one reason why I mentioned smartphone cameras.Short focusing distance, fairly wide view angles (60 - 90 or so degrees of view is pretty typical). Getting a decent shot with those is probably simple.

Arguably, I don't know how large your screen is, or from how close you want to shoot.

Primarily being able to make use of a Macro mode and switch up ISO. I get that smartphones these days often have options for this type of stuff, I've just seen so many people have trouble with getting proper captures of their CRTs with phone cameras that it's something that really worries me.

Hard to tell what you need, then. Theoretically, the W830 you mentioned can apparently focus from about 5cm onwards too, but when you're fully zoomed in that is 150cm.

The in-between might be a problem. But well, if you go with the W830 - it's a ~$60 camera

One trick here might be to get a Canon which can use http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK, like an IXUS 140. That camera also has a low minimum focusing distance of 1cm at the wide end... might be generally quite good to use.

My guess is not really.

A smartphone might have had a BSI sensor, but I'm not aware of cheap P&S having these.

And allegedly the lens on the IXUS 140 is pretty good with regards to chromatic aberrations and the like (for a P&S).

Figures it should be +- what you can get. Control over the software, RAW, AE bracketing, zebras and the like should trump most features that you could get from another P&S anyways.

Yeah, I dind't want to write too much distracting text, just looking for something like personal experiences or so about zoom vs primes.

As I already have the 50 and 85, at first the 28 can complete the line up, but maybe for travels and other situations the zoom (and the VR) can be more useful.
I have a similar zoom for APS-C, but can't experience a wide-angle prime, so i'm not sure if it's so good.

Different anon, and I prefer good primes.

They're good at resolving stuff and thus you're not working with much garbage data in post.

With most subjects I shoot, walking is an option, so I don't really need zoom in general.

I need an MFT lens that can have everything in focus. My lenses set to infinity aren't quite precise enough. It is being mounted to a drone with a motor for pan tilt but I don't have the money to get a follow focus rig yet. I can't seem to find one for MFT.

If you are looking for film cameras, then get an older super16 camera. Google Super16 or anything compared to it. You can get 35 mm film, too. Just depends on what you are willing to pay for/learn to use. There are many used cams out there, but the cool shit comes from some companies bringing back the retro film era and making modern film cameras with more "today" technology. Either way, you are still working with film.

Learn how to handle film and how to put it into camera/pull it out. You will need to handle each roll of film very carefully as to not get any light leaks or your film will be ruined. Find a near bye processing place and make sure they convert the film to a high quality digital files for your back up. After backed up, you can make digtal copies into a format more easily processed by weaker computers, like 2k or 1080.

Aspect ratio can be a style. But generally you want 16:9. Some lenses will give you a more panoramic effect, but you need to know how to process the footage, or use very powerful cameras to capture a wide view. Additionally, film tends to be 4:3, and you have to compensate for your 16:9 audience. Basically, shoot a little wider and make sure your composition has good head room above and below frame.

Lastly, a good cinematographer knows more about lenses than anything else. Get a film camera, and get an assortment of primes. Like a 25, 50, and maybe a 100 or 200. The 25 will be nice and wide. The 50 is a traditional favorite and is often used for interviews, OTS's, or anything where your talent is big in frame with a blurry background. Your 100+ lenses will be telephoto and should be used when you need to crush the atmosphere between the camera and the subject matter. They are also good at close ups if you can find one that can double as a macro telephoto.

How do I know if a lens is a good portrait lens?

I have an EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II kit lens and I'm in the market for a new lens and was wondering what the attributes of a good portrait lens is. Or is the kit lens a decent enough lens?

Cause if it is I'd instead be shopping for something that zooms more than 55mm cause I'm finding 55mm to not be nearly enough.

Sharpness and resolving power primarily.

F/1.8 or wider apertures & great light transmission secondarily.

Often (but certainly not always) 85mm focal length or more for less perspective distortion. No big noses and stuff.

Also, preferably great bokeh.

Portraits are generally the best looking somewhere between 85mm and 200mm (full frame - so ~50-235mm on your rebel).

For portraits it's also nice to be able to shoot a more shallow depth of field, and for the lens to have a pleasantly soft out of focus rendering.
By the way: I shoot nearly everything that's portrait on either a 35mm lens or an 85mm lens. For the occasional headshot I go to the 70-200, but I never really take it unless I make a whole setup for headshots.

There's no long zooms for canon that go beyond f/2.8, so either get something like a 70-200mm f/2.8, or a third party 50-135mm f/2.8 or just get an 85mm f/1.8.
