Minolta st 101

Hi, I know jack shit about cameras and photography, but recently my grandparents gave me the minolta st 101 that they also dont know anything about.

Is this a good camera? I know its from late 60's or something, but perhaps I could dive into photography with it? start to learn and such?

Even that is more like an interesting toy (with pretty high operation costs, with its 35mm film) than a device that I'd use to get anything done with.

You'll probably learn faster with a DSLR, MILC or even smartphone... and pay less for the learning experience.

If you want to shoot film, go for it bro.

Pretty sure it has a meter, but not sure if it takes mercury batteries. Probably does. You may be able to put a little rubber o ring around a hearing aid battery to get it to work.

You'll probably shoot a roll wondering if the pictures will come out. They will, unless you shoot something goofy like a sunset and expect the sky and ground to both lit equally.

Film's a lot more forgiving than you probably think.

this. if you can't get a battery, or the meter is broken, just look up Sunny 16 and use it. If in doubt, overexpose a bit - (negative) film doesn't deal that well with underexposure but handles overexposure gracefully, the opposite of digital.

batteries are possible, its more the old selenium cell might have perished. I have one that still works in daylight, but in any low-light scene its not accurate at all
dont think about finding lenses or anything just yet. spend about a year just shooting with what you got and get used to it

but if its your first FIRST camera, get something digital if you can.. it will end out cheaper and give you a better idea of how to shoot

I say the opposite.
Fuck manual. It's only real use these days is in mixed lighting and other edge scenarios.

Priority modes and Program are what you need to learn in the beginning. Otherwise you'll just become a worthless needlematcher who has no understanding of what they're doing.

I got my first camera 2 years ago. Started shooting immediatly, relying heavily on program modes. Despite knowing the exposure triangle in theory, I couldn't apply it. Until I switched to manual and spent some months trying out stuff, I never got a hold of it.

Today, now that I can handle it properly, I often use program modes and / or priority-modes. Understanding what the camera's doing gave me the confidence to trust it's program modes as well as going manual, if needed.

Quite sure, that if I didn't learn how to manually operate my camera, I'd still run into the same old problems in challenging lighting situations.

So, yes.

Go manual if you wanna learn and understand how to expose properly.

As for OP.

Go digital. Learn how to expose. After you've mastered this, you can opt for film. Will save you lot of time, money and keep frustration levels down.

1/squrt(2) of aperture is one stop
double the time is one stop
double the sensitivity is one stop.

WOW. that was hard wasn't it?

plus, with auto ISO standard on nearly all cameras, the idea of this triangle being a compromise is essentially obsolete in all but the most extreme situations. day to day, there's simply no reason not to shoot in manual with auto ISO on all the time, so that the photographer has the complete control over both motion and depth of field.

OP: use the camera, buy cheap C41 film from ebay (preferably XP2 black and white for drug-store labs, they generally fuck up the colour balance and it will put you off film. find a pro lab like RPL or RDFL for colour work, its expensive but worth every cent IMO.
when you progress a little, look into developing, scanning and using a darkroom. its an investment but its what makes the whole process worthwhile
HOWEVER.. I think first you should get a digital camera to use in tandem. nothing crazy, but a nice used/factory second DSLR or mirrorless camera + an adapter so you can use your current glass and save a little money. learn the exposure triangle, learn about the limitations of both cameras. shoot plenty and take notes

read books for advice on technique. forget forums, they will just tell you to buy more gear than you actually need.
