Let's have a serious talk about Terry Richardson.

In your own words, do you think people think Terry's photography is good?

Is it purely because of the subject matter (eg: pictures of celebrities)? Because, we could all take harsh light flash pictures of anybody against a white background, but nobody would be clamoring to get us to take their pictures, right?

So what is it about Terry?

Well, you can see a picture of a celebrity with harsh light and automatically say "hey, that looks like Terry Richardson". You can also tell all their subjects adopt an special relaxed easygoing attitude when posing for him. That's a merit of the photographer, and is another trait that makes his style so recognisable.

I kinda like it for the pure audacity of it. He's taking taking these figures, these recognisable faces and putting them in "raw" situations. No one else has the connections or balls to take pix like him.

Once again, this troll thread draws all the people who miss the point of Terry's work.

it's not the light, it's not the fact that he's got famous people, it's not that he is goofy looking, or because his dad was a photographer.

Terry's work is good because he's a master at drawing genuine energy and emotion out of normally guarded A list celebrities. It's a window into a world we'll never ever see or be a part of. He's a fantastic portrait artist.

He's the absolute antithesis of /p/. He uses simple gear, and simple light, and puts all the emphasis on the moment, the subject, the emotions, and the story. All things /p/ can't get behind.

people say all that about karsh and avedon and it's bullshit then too. a portrait isn't capable of being genuine it contains only an illusion of truth and terry is a only master at creating that illusion. this is raw and real and these people are without their mask but the opposite is ture. the hard flash on a stark white wall makes it seem honest. it's a gag that people fall for. what makes terry an artist is that he isn't pretending it's something else - he is exploring the pretense.

Not the original poster but what I think he's saying is there's no other photographer who has both access to countless celebrities to take photos of, and who takes his approach, ie not smoothing everything over with photoshop, not making pin up glamour shots with wind machines and fine flowing silks and lusty gazes, and most importantly, not taking photos that look like every other portrait photographer in America. Think about it, if you're Miley Cyrus or whoever and someone offers to take a nude or sexual shoot that makes you look completely different to every other girl in LA, you're going to take it

I got the same one on ebay for $18 but there doesn't appear to be any listings for less than like $40

I like the shadow it makes. I haven't used it in awhile because I've broken both TTL cables while shooting shows.

it also feels REALLY nice in your hand because it places the weight of your speedlite on the right side of your hand making your dslr more balanced feeling
