I don't know if the camera is any good (though it probably isn't) and I don't care enough to bother checking. If you manage to take some nice pictures with it I guess the money wasn't wasted completely.

If by amateur you mean snapshits of family and friends and holidays (in good light) then sure, it's fine.

The mega ultra zoom looks fun and it's other features but if you do get into photography more you'll soon become frustrated by it's limitations.
