It's the opposite for film; film excels in retaining highlight information, as the negative simply gets more dense. Meanwhile, poorly exposed shadows result in little "data" being recorded, giving you muddy details and grain in the shadows. Expose for shadows, let the film (color negative, specifically, slides a shit) handle the highlights even when it's 7+ stops higher than the shadows.
