It's not like with carbon tripods where you can hang your backpack or bag underneath on a hook if you have some ultralight carbon tripod.
Apart from that part specifically, I'd say lighter is generally better, yes.
Compactness... not for everyone. I like my tripods big, for comfortable operation and the occasionally used option to elevate the camera way over my head and shoot with a remote trigger
