Fomapan and other small Europoor film brands

Hey /p/. I need to stock up on B&W to test run my new Zenit with, and I happened to stumble upon Fomapan, made by a Czech company. It seems dirt cheap at around 3.5 - 4.5€ a roll. Is it any good or should I just pay through the butt for Kodak? What other small film brands are there still around? I know Ferrania is trying to restart the production, but that's about it.

You just said yourself that you want to test run it. Why stick something ultrafine and expensive inside something that might not work properly (though, admittedly, what beside shutter times not being extra correct (you'd notice any significant delays yourself) or whatever lightmetering method you chose can you test by getting a roll of film through it, I can't imagine. Unless you want to test the IQ of your helios-44-whatever grain shouldn't bother you.

Because that's all I know about the fomapan films - they're grainy.

The rule of thumb for checking out diff films is looking up flickr/other photo upload sites for shots made on film of interest, enough to get an idea of how they handle stuff. Y'know, check many diff photographers/shots in various conditons, making note of any postprocessing etc, should take you like 10-20 minutes at most for a specific brand/speed of film.

That is, fucking faster than posting on /p/ and waiting forever for a rude/useless/unhelpful response.

If you are in Europe Rollei rpx is a great choice of film.
For me the 400 has just the best value and it renders skies and clouds wonderfully when developed in rodinal

I've only tried the Rollei 400S IR film, which is a lot of fun every now and then. RPX is pretty expensive, but I'll give it a try if I come across some.

This is Finland, our local shops have jew prices, the only time you can get stuff for cheap is when they have expired stock they need to get rid of. Though not all of them even sell them, and rather just dispose of the expired stuff.

It's like you're me 20 years ago.

Fomapan is all right. I did almost all of my early shit on 200. 100 isn't worth it imo, nearly the same grain as the 200 version but you lose a stop.

I saw people recommend Rodinal. Again, most of my early shit I developed in R-09 (Czech backwards-engineered Rodinal equivalent). Don't know if I would recommend it, you can cut yourself with the grain in this combination. Unless you like grain you can cut yourself with.

It doesn't curl noticeably more or less than other films from "big" brands I used. Sounds like an urban legend to me.

Did Ferrania start producing yet? Did they even plan doing B&W? I thought they were C41 only before, might be wrong though.

100 ft is like 35 bucks if you put it on cassettes yourself.

Poorfag film's a bit of a thing. On one hand it's an attractive idea to be able to rattle off frame after frame and not give a fuck. On the other hand, developing 2 rolls at a time and scanning in batches of 4, I end up spending about 2 minutes per frame in all sorts of processing just to tell wheat from chaff. Though it's all in good fun, it's still about 8 times as much as for digital -- and most of that, too, is waiting at a computer and data acquisition device, and weeding out the snapshits.

So in that way there's not a lot of point in using cheap film for the price, unless you're unemployed -- then it's bulk-roll-o-rama all day erryday.
