This summer I will be embedding myself in a troupe of fire performers. I shoot with a Canon 6D and have only the nifty fifty (50mm f1.8) lens to use with it. Will this be sufficient to achieve sharp photos, or should I consider purchasing another lens?

I have a similar doubt, this sunday im going to take photos at a light party event and i'm looking for tips for nightime lightining shows shooting.
I took some photos of the nightsky the other day so will bump with them

For awesome fire photos, get a good flash with rear curtain sync. You can then lower you shutter speed to 1/15th or slower if you wanted, to get some nice fire trails, then the flash pops right at the end, which freezes the performer. It looks a lot better than the frozen fire shots which don't show movement, or the blurry as hell motion shots which you can't recognize the performer.

I would also suggest a 16-35mm lens instead of the 50. With the flash, you won't need super bright apertures, and the wide zoom opens a lot of creative doors that the 50 is limited on.

Any suggestions on what external flashes I should buy? I think I need two ... I was looking at the cheapest canon ones on the market which run about $135 refurbished

Canon 430ex ii should be enough. Tilt/swivel, ttl, compensation, and some forms of wireless ready off-camera ability.

I shoot my 6D with Nikon flashes when off camera, so I don't have enough experience with Canon flashes to give you specific advice.

Look into Yongnou-Flashes. TTL isn't necessary for what you are doing. The go dirt-cheap and Have a great quality. If you need two flashes, have a look at their Flash triggers as well.

My advisor suggested I stick with Canon over Yongnou... he claims canon flashes register better off camera when using a remote

For a two flash, off camera system, yeah, those could probably work. Just make sure the stands you use have enough adjustability to make up for the flash's lack of tilt/swivel. You might end up with a pretty limited flash range and power, though. So be mindful about where you set up the flashes.

Either get a single, tilt/swivel flash to use on camera with diffusers and light sphere type accessories, or a two+ flash, off camera, wireless system.

One is more mobile, and easier to shoot with, which is good for shooting actual performances with, and the other offers more creative possibilities, but has to be purposefully staged.

Personally, I would use the single flash.

430 ex II with a remote from magic lantern so if I can fire it remotely. My brother has some yungnou flashes that I could play around with aswell

I'm having a lot of fun with my 6d and 50 1.8 stm, here's one of the pics I've taken recently.

Admittedly I'm just a GWC though so I'll be looking at the suggestions in here too.

I assume that means out of the camera. No, it was a raw I've just desaturated it for that version. I was pretty gutted when I saw his feet were out of frame in that.

Here's another shot that I've got his whole body in that I left it in colour. Just a rough edit as I haven't got my glasses on.

I use inexpensive Yongnou flashes with Cactus triggers for off-camera, and they work great. Obviously they're not as powerful as the Canon 430 EX II, but for something like $35 a pop, what do you expect. You may have to spend a bit more for rear-curtain sync on the Yongnous, though, but they'll still be vastly cheaper than Canon.
