>>2682110USSR rangefinders have focal-plane cloth shutters, multiple shutter speeds, diopter corrected finders, metal film guides, an actual pressure plate behind the film, and 4-element 3-group glass lenses with aperture and focus control. So they don't really fit in the "toy camera" category. More like, old camera from the USSR, like iron-curtain gear in general, like zenits and prakticas (awful finders in them, IMO), even the lenses have swirly-bokeh character like that of Kievs, Pentacon Sixes, and other Soviet MF gear. Heck, even a Smena can be quite good. Glass lens, proper interframes, etc.
But at the same time hipsters are all over that shit, and for great reasons as well: they're actual cameras, and it's possible to stop being an overt lomofag and start paying attention with them. And on the third hand, plenty of hipsterish photographers (as opposed to photography-oriented hipsters) use the stuff either au naturel or adapted to a mirrorless platform.
Old soviet gear is enough and has enough character (besides digital-tier ultrasharpness) to suit both lomofaggotry and serious hobbyist photography. Make of it what you will. Usually "toy camera" is reserved for far more primitive gear.
