Any critiques for this? If I was trying harder I would have avoided that guy in the background and also that umbrella hat, but I actually like the lighting and composition aside from that. I bumped the brightness up a bit but other than that didn't touch it. You guys can edit the RAW if there's anything you want to try (I might do a crop, but I don't really know if that would help at all). Thanks!

which is understandable because you just got your first DSLR and you're probably like "holy shit look how shallow the DOF is i'm a photographer now"

focus should be stronger on her eyes and face, they're not particularly sharp

glare coming off her eye is kinda distracting

it's not a good shot

idk just keep shooting and having fun you'll find your groove

wtf lens are you shooting with, why does the exif say max aperture is 5.7

Awkward composition (hair cut off, umbrella behind head) bad lighting (harsh highligts on backside of face, background blown out), lame facial expression... lots of things.

What's a good way to use autofocus more effectively? I'm fine with manual but if I need to take a quick picture it's not feasible. I'm not sure why the exif data said that, it's just the kit lens that came with my Nikon D3300 (18-55, 3.5-5.6)

Thanks, I actually appreciate that. When you say backside, do you mean her left side?

Also I know this is a snapshot, it was literally a "hey, check out my new camera, can I try and take your picture with it?" moment. I'll post stuff that I put more effort into later but I just wanted some advice on what I had right now

Yeah but if you KNEW it was a shitty snapshot, then why ask for advice and critique?

I don't ask a music critic to critique me farting in my sleep, I show them an actual song and ask for feedback. What did you expect to gain from a shitty snapshot and our input?

tl;dr: plenty of light, wide aperture, manually adjust focus close to where you want the autofocus to find it, so that when it autofocuses it won't search all over. Keep subject in the center of the autofocus points.

Basically, you shouldn't use it unless you have to.

I do all sorts of photography: portraits, product, wildlife macro and telephoto, and sports.

In portraiture, autofocus is basically useless because there is plenty of time to set up a shot and pick the focal plane you want. And in portraiture, for the most part (especially a head-on shot), it's about the eyes. You want the strongest focus and sharpness there unless there's some extraordinary compositional reason not to, and in this case, there's no reason not to have it on the eyes.

In product macro and wildlife macro, autofocus is useless. Focus is relatively much more difficult to hit. My technique when holding the camera is to try to nail focus, fire off several shots, review them and see if I hit. When on a tripod or a focusing rail I don't need autofocus.

How I autofocus when shooting sports and birds is: I have good gear, I have a lot of light, I have the lens no smaller than f/8.

You need to practice more and you'll find manual focus to be a great option on most of your shots.

Here's the best advice you could get as a beginner:

Shoot a lot of fucking photos. Don't ever take one photo of your subject and call it a day. Explore angles and expression and timing and lighting and composition with your camera. Shoot until you're tired of looking at your subject, and then shoot fifteen more. And then? When you get home? Be choosy. Out of a hundred photos, keep one and ignore the rest.

Shooting is a chore, but only the good photographers know that.

No, DO NOT manually adjust focus with the 18-55mm. It does not have a manual override and you'll just fuck your lens up if you try that.

Of course you can switch the lens to MF and then back to AF, but that's just silly.

Just switch to single-point AF and get used to moving AF points with the d-pad.

That's fine for some situations, but if you're working with a very shallow depth of field the recomposing might be enough to throw your subject out of focus.

If you're not in a hurry, i.e. the subject is static or obedient, you should use the focus points generally.
