If you have your camera in a bag, or even slung over you shoulder, you will just keep thinking about it, getting more and more anxious, instead of using it. Carry it in your hand and you'll soon find it swings up to the eye automatically when you see something interesting. When that happens you'll simply forget everyone else and just concentrate on the shot.
Never ever try to be sneaky and don't fall for the popular ruse that small cameras make you less noticeable. They do not. That is just bullshit perpetuated by blogs whose primary motive is to sell you a new camera because your DSLR is no good for 'street'. If anything smaller cameras make you look more sneaky.
