Whats your sharpest lens?

I've got an 18-55mm kit lens for my t3i and the shots are fine but at close inspection they're all blurry. I know it can't be the sensor so maybe its my shitty viewfinder thats not allowing me to focus correctly or its the lens.

So I'm looking for new lenses. what do you guys use?

I knew I was right. looks like I'll have to work a bit harder to get a better image at higher f-stops.

not good for me when I want to learn studio and outdoor portrait photography.

Yes and yes.Bought a cheap adapter on eBay which does its job just fine. As for the EF lenses on my a6000. I got myself a rather cheap (compared to the metabones ones) adapter with AF-confirmation and full Exif support for ~$80. AF is kinda slow but accurate. However, I prefer using the lens in MF mode which is no problem on the a6000 as it does have focus peaking/focus magnification.

Sony cameras and Canon lenses are a great combo.

Sure. The only thing these adapters do is fix the flange distance between the lens and the sensor since the a6000 has no mirror box.

then I'm probably just nitpicking then?

I'm just trying to learn how the settings affect my shots, so I shoot in manual.

also if the view finder is out of focus I'd have a wrong setting when I manually focus.

evf is better to manual focus than the ovf on dslr.

I have an SMC-A 50/1.4, and I agree.
I blew too much money on the 77/1.8 Limited, too, and that's just as sharp at f/4-5.6

I thought that this would be an easy question. But it's not.

I just stopped caring about knowing what lens is sharper than the next. I have enough lenses that in field shooting conditions, result in stupidly crisp images, that knowing which is the best stopped mattering.

At this point, most lenses are sharp and the real questions revolve around contrast, rendering and weak points.

This image is from one of my "softer" lenses - ZM 18mm f/4 wide open. Given this - does it matter which is sharper?

Try again on recent 20-40MP+ cameras.

I'd expect that you notice some deficits on your older lenses, even if they seem to be doing very good on your current camera.

Sure, in studio lab tests, you can find the soft spots for most lenses and differences among them.

I use an A7R. It's a nightmare for pixel peeping. Once you process and down-rez to a usable size - that all disappears.

You'd be very hard pressed to tell the difference between the handheld images shot with the Sigma 35mm ART vs. a $19.99 28mm f/2.8 FD lens I carry around sometimes.

The quality of lenses at this point have such small differences in resolving power that technique accounts for the majority of sharpness differences in real world images.

Sharpness really doesn't matter all that much anymore - once you get past the really really cheap stuff and superzooms.

Or a sensor with higher resolution, for that matter. I mean, in the poor lens on a high resolution sensor combo, you'll be shooting maybe 15:16 or more trash data that you then will have to discard to get to the 1:16 useful data. Actually, in this case, a higher resolution sensor only makes your life more difficult in the process for basically no benefit at all.

But I'll propose that most people don't actually want to do this anyways? You shoot at 20-40MP to get an image which you can edit more easily, Including crops into smaller areas of the image and all that stuff that is actually frequently interesting to do, *if* you can do it.

Some also just like high resolution images for digital viewing - it's not like that one has an usable size.

All my quality lenses are sharp enough, even for my 36MP sensor and even wide open.

I do also have some shitty lenses.
With those it does matter, and I tend to stop down more than I want just to get some extra sharpness out of them.

The advantages are still there for sure. It's just that the lenses are generally all so good, that most reasonable pursuits can be achieved.

The high res sensor provides you the flexibility to make more mistakes, shoot in tougher conditions, and get usable results from iffy images when you need to.

The overall point, though, is that the resolution differences between lenses tend to be overshadowed by other factors at this time.

True. Forget about noise, imagine the 1/(focal length) rule to be valid for 35mm film cameras and still be implemented in the auto-iso setting of the most high-resolution cameras.
And yes, images of modern cameras do allow larger prints when, and only when, these are pixel sharp.

Let's just say "consumer cameras" - the consumer cameras of today allow you to print larger with good quality with less effort than ever before.

Medium and larger format film is certainly superior, but overall more difficult and inaccessible to most people and really should be viewed as a separate category at this point.

That kit lens should be plenty sharp. Especially for that sensor. 1/30th could still give you a little motion blur even at 18mm. Try a stop higher ISO and increase shutter to 1/60th. I used to have a t2iband I was pretty happy with the sharpness of the kit lens

I've been trying to locate a really sharp M42 that wont break the bank. So far all I find suggested are the Helios 44-2 but it has glowing and other "vintage" issues that I'm hoping to avoid. I'd like a really sharp and technically solid M42 lens for architecture / landscape.

Further most kit lenses are like f/3.5 at the fastest...so if it's a shit lens design at f/1.8, who cares? It can't physically be used that open.

m42 is junk mount.
Patrician tier lenses for it are rare.
And thus expensive.
And because you're a retarded plen asking this question on a cambodian felching blog, I'd assume you only want an m42 lense because you perceive them to be cheap.
So you won't find what you want.
The cheapest lense you will find with a modern rendering will be the Fuji EBC 55/1.8 but you will need to use an angle grider on a little tab on the side to make it fit your rabal properly.
The sharpest lense you could potentially find and afford, and which will potentially be the sharpest lense you'll ever own, is the Takumar 50/4 Macro.
But again, you're a retarded plen, so you probably won't be agle to handle a grinder or an f4 lense.

That reminds way back when I bought my 5D2, I had to hack my 17-55 to get it to fit on, needless to say it worked in at least some aspects. Had to use it from 20mm up to prevent it from hitting the mirror.

Oh yeah, my sharpest lens today is the Pentax FA 150mm f/2.8, some people say the 120mm macro is sharper, but at f/8 and smaller the 150mm has superior corner sharpness.
