The photographer was pretty much in a war zone, in the dark. The photo was most likely immediately rushed to the editors for publication without any editing. It's a shit, rushed photo, but that's what you'd expect from an event like this.

film era photos were way better. be it warzone, crime scene, accidents, guys were ruthless and bold. i have yet to see a current day event photo that isnt some forgettable crap that also looks shit.

Film era journalists had fewer terrorists explicitly targetting them.
It was a time of innocence where most "bad guys" would just as soon show off to the camera in hopes of their side of the story being heard.

In the modern era, people are wary of cameras. We're post-internet, post-widespread images.
