The reason why this photographer shot it at a normal orientation is because of the way they're lying. It makes your eyes move from one side of the image to the other. Which is the way your eyes typically scan an image in this orientation.
If you did it in portrait it would have caused a weird looking composition, due to the way the two are lying in the scene.
