>>2870000Culturally Kyushu is definitely more individualistic, kinder, and more outgoing, especially in the rural areas, and it really shows when interacting with the people. Up in Honshu the culture is so much more generic, and the behavior of the average person is literally indistinguishable from autism. The social awkwardness is unbearable and people are fucking jerks. Also the whole age=seniority thing is so much stronger up here. My girlfriend is Japanese and teaches at a private school, and the older teachers bully the younger teachers every single day to build up their egos. I see it a lot in my schools too.
Also, In Kyushu I never got told by the real estate companies that I needed specific, special permission from the building owner to make sure they would allow a foreigner moving in.
Source: I've lived in Fukuoka, Nagasaki, traveled all over Kyushu, and now living in Gifu for the past 3 years here on Honshu.
Moving back to the US next year, though. Other than the postal service I honestly don't think I'll miss much at all about living here.
