Absolutely amazing. Like, I was a 18mm wide angle dude on film, but 23mm is just "right".

Never shot with a digital, let alone with such a good lens - so it's a treat. Probably won't need anything else for a while.

Canon-AE1 with a 28mm lens - did a lot of B&W work in the darkroom and did some printing.

So the reason why it took me so long, was that 6 years ago I started with film to learn the basics. A friend of mine got a Fuji XE-1 and I loved the look and feel of it.

He then tried to last year convince me to get the X-T10, but I was still unconvinced cos it felt like selling out.

But cut to this year and I went to Portugal and I really could of used a good digital as the colour film stuff was getting tedious to print and process. So I started look at the X100T, but as I was about to hit "pay", I thought, WTF... I'm paying for a fixed lens camera for a huge amount...

The X-T10 was 450£ for the body - and is newer tech. The same friend lent me a bunch of lenses to play with, and I settled on getting the 23mm f1.4.

So in total I've spent about £900, and that's only 200£ more than I would have spent on the X100T... And I have a ream of benefits.

Fuji is THE camera to look for when going digital. It's an incredible system for the price you pay.

I don't get why this is such a deal breaker to people - how many of you actually go out during a monsoon to shoot? Is it that important that you need to be in a downpour to make a camera worth something?

I abuse my fuji XE-1 with rain quite a bit, of course during heavier downpours I go out to shoot with an umbrella, but that doesn't keep the camera from getting pretty wet. rain can be inspiring, it offers a change in the environment you usually shoot in. I actually never went out to shoot during the rain for a long period of time, then one day I look through all of my photos and realized that I have absolutely zero photo that depicted rain, so I kinda set that as an assignment for myself - to shoot in the rain for once, and I actually enjoyed it quite a lot thus I do it quite frequently now. you really should try everything out at least once, anon.

these can be found very cheap but still very good quality with great lenses,

it's surprising how much they managed to pack into this thing. I'm pretty impressed with the build quality and nice little features missing from my XD11. the meter is interesting, very simple and intuitive. there are some good deals on eBay right now but most are body only and as expected, pretty beat up considering the majority have been used in the field pretty heavily. worth the effort to find one in good condition.

So I'm a beginner too and I guess this would be the best thread for my question.

At the moment I don't have a camera but I've always been kinda interested in photography. Two weeks ago I went on holiday for a weekend, and long story short I want a camera now.

I have a budget of 500/600€ max and some of my friends/or Youtube stuff generaly say that the Canon EOS 600D is good.

So I guess I wanted to know if it's a good idea or if it is stragiht up stupid and that I kind find something better.

I will be mostly using the camera to take landscape/city/building kind of photos (if you see what I mean).

use flickr to research your camera. just search the photos for the camera model you want. then decide what lens you will be using and search for that camera model and that lens.

you can read all the text you want. looking at the actual images a camera produces helped me make a better decision.

a canan rabal t3i is three or so generations outdated. i think canan in on the t6 model now. it's popular because you can walk in to a box retail store and someone making minimum wage can sell you one.

Fuck pixels, that's the best DSLR Nikon ever made and you can find them for dirt cheap and if you hunt around you can find some that used to be backup cameras and are very lightly used with a low shutter-count.

I need some advice: I just won an auction for a Zeiss Jena Sonnar 180/f2.8 MC (P6-mount) on eBay for use on my D7000 (pic related, from the listing).
I am shopping for P6-Nikon F mount adapters right now, but I'm having a couple of points I want advice on:

- Is a western brand an absolute requirement for getting a decent quality adapter? (I doubt it, and actually read some bad stuff about the Fotodiox adapters having either play or getting stuck to bodies/camera's)

- If "no" to the previous point, is "K&F Concepts" good quality for China-stuff? (it has to be sturdy enough for a heavy Zeiss Sonnar of about 1 kg)

- After getting a adapter, how do I go about reducing internal flare caused by using a larger format lens than the sensor? I read about using (rear) baffles for fixing this, but where the hell can I find baffles as aftermarket parts or instructions on creating one myself? I haven't been able to find either on the internet until now, I must be looking in the wrong places.

Also: Yes, a medium format lens on a DX body, I know about the huge crop factor/dimished field-of-view using it this way will cause, but it remains perfectly usable for my intended purposes (astrophotography) with these effects

Well then you can spend that extra money on macro rails to make framing easier or to allow stitching several shots to make up for the lower resolution, or more lights, or maybe even so you can buy more praying mantises and aluminum foil to take 2deep4u photos of, or whatever else. If you don't need any of that stuff then put the money towards a more expensive body instead, I'm just pointing out that spending extra on the body may not necessarily be the best way to improve your photos.

Very valid question, I considered the Nikkor 180/2.8 AI-S (both ED and non-ED) briefly (and might still get it later) but I decided against it at this time because:
- the angle of view the Zeiss has on my D7000 is very good for astro- and airplane photography (which I'm looking to get into more), and will still good for those purposes be if I ever switch to full-frame digital or medium format
- I am currently contemplating getting started with a cheaper medium camera, possibly a Kiev-60/Pentacon-Six, which for example this lens would fit without a adapter
- The Zeiss is cheaper. I'm on a college-tier budget and won the auction for around 150 euro's for a lens in good condition (pic related), the Nikkor is currently going for at least a good 50-100 euro's more on eBay
- has near-legendary build- and optical quality that is arguably even better than many MF Nikkors, while still being cheaper than the Nikkor option

Don't get me wrong, the Nikkor looks very good to me for its price, but simply has slightly less going for it to me compared to the Zeiss at the moment, and is more expensive to boot

My ONLY complaint with Fuji lenses is that they're not weather sealed. Got loads of dust in my 56mm from using it in the desert. How hard is it to seal and gasket a prime ffs.

I love my 23 1.4 as well, and wouldn't think of trading it for the f/2. I know /p/ likes to shit on bokeh whoring, but the ability to pull a nice shallow DoF at 23mm is very useful sometimes. I also really love the focus ring system and wish all of Fuji's lenses had it.

I think the size is a bit overstated, too. It feels big on the cameras it's made for, but it's really still a pretty small lens, about the size of a FF 50 1.4 and much smaller than a FF 35 1.4.

I might go for the f/2 if I were putting it on a small body and using it as a "casual" camera, but on an X-Pro2 or X-T2 and as part of a primary camera system, the 1.4 is definitely the way to go.

I learned that every Fuji lens has a personality, and this one is quite smooth yet strong if that makes sense. I had the 18mm for a while, but it was kind of disappointing in comparison.

Open source/free options are all crap because the demosaicing is all based on Frank Markesteijn's algorithm which is great for preserving detail but in practice is makes a ton of false color.

I am coding a better demosaicer though.

X100T m80. I have an Xpro1, I'm likely selling it for one quite soon. You'll appreciate the updated viewfinder tech in the x100 far more than what is perhaps a slightly better lens in the 35 f1.4. You can hit the same focal lengths with the x100 with the first party adapters anyway, and honestly the smaller size is a blessing.

Changing them does nothing because that code is never run.

The only params for the XTrans demosaic are a choice between 1 or 3-pass markesteijn, 'fast' which looks like it does nearest neighbor (crap), 'mono' which just desaturates everything, and 'none' which doesn't do anything. There is also a 'false color supression steps' slider which doesn't actually work.

all the params in the world mean nothing if the technique is bad, which it is here.

Only this and their preprocessing filters are run, and those aren't the source of all the false color.

lr is a lot better now. I used to use lr5 and the colors always seemed a bit off and sharpness just wasn't there without getting "wormy." lr cc is much improved and will continue to be improved. while the files can't get as sharp as they are on capture one, which is supposedly the best for these files, lr/ps is far cheaper for two powerful applications that run circles around everything else in terms of usability. I have a very powerful computer (i7 860, 16gb ram, SSD with programs on it) and Lightroom is still slow on it.

It's all up to the size of your catalogs. I used to have a big catalog for all of my photos, now I use one catalog for work and one for personal stuff, and I make a new catalog every year. It's still slow.

Just getting into photography, been reading a bunch of shit and plan on hitting up the flea market this weekend to find a cheap 35mm film camera with a manual mode (or even fully manual) and a 50mm lens

Anyways, my question is about light meters, specifically built in light meters. From what I've read so far you use aperture size, shutter speed, and ISO to control exposure. I understand light meters are also used to control exposure, but how are they related to the aperture, shutter speed and ISO? If the light meter on a camera breaks is the camera totally useless? Or are they just used for Automatic modes and control shutter speed or aperture by themselves? I hope I'm making any sense at all. Most of the things I'm finding on Google deal with DSLRs and those external light meters but not much for built in ones on film cameras

Also, I guess some general tips on making sure you aren't buying a totally busted camera at the flea market?

If you went out and dropped $800-1200 on a camera system (or anything for that matter) you'd better be damn well sure it's what you wanted and what you needed.

The viewfinder/EVF of any mirrorless camera bogs down in low light conditions when you have image exposure preview turned on, and the shutter speed drops below 1/60. Now you're previewing at less than 60 fps.

Resolve this by turning off image preview (thereby allowing the camera to choose any exposure to get the viewfinder image bright), getting faster lenses (the f1.8 primes at a minimum), using a tripod for static scenery, or killing your self.

If it's pitch black outside, then you're just being daft; no camera's going to give you a nice clean image short of a SOTA FF camera. I still wouldnt bring a M43 camera with me into a EV 4-6 situation.

Your only solutions now are gitting gud, buying 0.95/1.2/1.4/1.8 primes for M43, going Fuji and 1.2/1.4/2 primes, or killing yourself.

Get Canon 6D for $1200 or get X-Pro1 and spend the rest on lenses?
6D is FF but Fuji has cheaper primes that I find interesting, and it's smaller.
At the moment I am shooting mostly with 50D with some cheap M42 lenses.

The X-Pro1's EVF is even worse than the X-E2, and the OVF is borderline useless in the Pro1, since you have no way to confirm focus. IMO it wasn't until the X100T and Pro2 that the OVF became useful.

I'll vote to keep it as well. It's a great lens, and if you want the extra reach of the 70-300 you can pick up a cheap 1.4x TC and have 300 f/4 instead of the 70-300's 5.6.

What body are you using? If you want a really sharp portrait lens with shallow DoF and you're on FF, I'd suggest grabbing a Rokinon/Samyang/Bower/etc 85 1.4, it's dirt cheap and optically excellent.

The 70-300 is quite soft beyond 200mm.
So you won't really gain any reach compared to cropping your current (sharp) 200mm image.

Just get a 50 f/1.8 if you can't afford an f/1.4
You could even get the Yongnuo (the Canon nify-fifty clone) in Nikon mount.

I'm not gonna lie and tell you it's the same, but it's really not bad. I was quite pleasantly surprised when I got my original X100, you definitely know you're using an EVF but it doesn't really get in the way of taking photos.

Actually, I just realized that for basically the same price as that 6D, you could get the "deluxe" X-T10 kit with the 18-55 2.8-4. The X-T10 is a much better body than the X-Pro1 or E2, and the 18-55 is a really nice lens, closer in quality to a 24-70 than other brands' 18-55 kit lenses, and the viewfinder quality is pretty similar to an APS-C DSLR. Grab that and a cheap M42 adapter for the lenses you have, and you'd have a decent kit.

If you're in the US, by the way, Best Buy carries Fuji cameras including the X-T10 and E2S, I'd recommend trying one in the store to see how you like the EVF. I was impressed enough by it that I sold my whole Nikon FF kit and replaced it with an X-Pro2 setup, but not everybody will feel the same way.

Just when APS-C e-mount gets a nice full line of lenses, Sony releases full frame and it is back to ::no lenses::.

Optically it is a fine lens, the autofocus speed is just bad. If they fix the focus speed in a firmware update it will be a steal. It isn't really unusable either. Just falls short of every other e-mount lens.

If you want a fullframe 50mm though, it'd be better to go with the 55mm zeiss. Absolutely fantastic lens.

AR Hexanons are pretty nice. Some mediocre, some great.

Get the 50/1.7, it's cheap and crazy sharp, even wide-open. Look it up, it was one of the sharpest 50mm f/1.8-1.7 lenses of the time. There were multiple versions IIRC, but they all had the same optical formula.
The 40/1.8 is also a nice pancake lens.

Two of the optics pictured diverge the light and thus decrease the intensity of the light. The telephoto adapter may increase the light by a factor of about x2.

The telephoto lens adapter may induce an ant BBQ fest with deck chairs and icecream, but not a certain death.

Sorry to be a pedant but ant lives matter (and knowing the difference between a positive and negative lens).

I got it this morning, tried do to some street shooting (tiring work) then in the afternoon went to a shooting assignment. Had to fall back on my 24-70mm f/2.8 VC though since it was a very tight and small venue. Already earning me monies though :)

Now I need a proper backpack. Something with a quick access door and a can hold three zoom lenses (12-24mm, 24-70mm and 70-200mm) as well as my Canon EOS 6D with a flashgun and 50mm f/1.8.

Budget is $350.

Something inconspicuous (doesn't look like a camera bag) would be a big bonus too.

I do it at the longest end of a zoom lens. Most non-shit lenses tend to behave the same throughout the zoom range regarding the AF.
Place a bit of contrasty thing, box or something for the AF to latch on and a piece of paper with markings, or a ruler. Set the adjustment one step at a time, take a shot and compare.

The 1.4 I forgot to mention in my first post. It's also a very nice lens. Both are good value for money, but you can more easily find the 50/1.7 for a bargain price.

Just read the fujivsfuji XT10/1/E2 comparison. They've updated it for FW4.

An E2s/E2 with FW4 is software and hardware wise identical to a T10. The rangefinder bodies lose the flippy screen though. That's about it.

I'm thinking about buying sony a7, only for night shots. Milky way, big nebulae etc. For now i'm going to stick with tripod, but i'll buy drive for longer exposures, that's sure. I think an adapted MF lens is actually a solid choice for astro on any system, since you're just gonna be shooting at infinity anyway and therefore don't need AF. Somebody else will have to be the one to recommend specific glass, though, as I don't know much about MF superteles.

I have seen some very nice milky way shots out of the a7.

They seem to LOVE e-mount, especially the a7 series, but they will have other suggestions for bodies and lenses and guides for shooting too. There are quite a lot of wide manual lenses available for e-mount, which are perfect for astrophotography.

They have a review specifically comparing the a7s and xt1, they aren't really that far apart in performance.

I am kinda interested in how the newer mark ii a7 bodies compare though. The a7rii has a beast of a sensor.

You can do a lot of deep sky with a cheap old but sharp 300mm or 400mm lens and tracking. Either by a tracking mount or the Pentax gps thingy. A sturdy tripod and a geared head is a must either way.

Even so, going by lonelyspecks comparison it still outperforms the X-T1.

I have issue with my Minolta SRT102.
When I'm shooting longer exposures I'm getting light leaks, usually above and below where the film perforation should be. But I've been told that it's the issue of film back not holding the film correctly. And besides the light leaks this is also supposed to cause focus decline.
So my question is - can it be adjusted in any way? Or should I buy a new camera for my menelta glass?
