I would have to go with W. Eugene Smith. So much of his work is art in and of itself, like Ansel Adams. But he was able to tell complete stories with just pictures. Stories of war (Iwo Jima), happiness (Nurse Midwife), grief, tragedy (Minimata), the turmoil of a decade (Pittsburg), or even just the life of a normal person (Country Doctor).
