The shittiest of extinction meters from the first half of 20th century are more accurate than guys who "figure it in their heads".

It's more useful to figure the *contrast* of the scene, the dynamic range. And you do that by *using* the camera's meter in spot mode, metering the darkest and brighter spots.
This is a much more useful skill, and more attainable since your eyes are much better detecting relative brightness than absolute brighteness (LV).
