Hey /p/ I was recently gifted a Sigma 30mm f1.4 lens for my D3300

I'm having trouble figuring out how to use it well. So if I set it to f1.4 on my camera everything is blurry unless the distance is perfect -- should I just scale it up to 2 or 3?

Any suggestions or tips on how to work with this type of lens would be greatly appreciated!

I have this lens, and yes. Read up on aperture and depth of field. Scale it up to 4 or 5 to be safe

I have the newer "Art" version of this lense.
It is excellent, but so is your version.
I primarily use it for taking wide angle bokeh snapshits on film.
On all formats I would avoid using this lense for copy work or architecture, as it has strong barrel distortion.
On digital especially I would avoid taking a lot of pictures with metallic surfaces or specular highlights wide open, as this lense shows a lot of longitudinal CA.

My fastest lens is an f/2.4 and I can only tell you how I use fast lenses.
Maximum aperture is for the most light, only use it in low light or dark situations. Depending on your subject lighting, even in low light you can close the aperture to get sharper image or more DoF. On my f/2.4 I usually don't go wider than f/2.8, this is where it performs well with shallow enough DoF or most light to keep ISO low. In good lighting conditions I go up to f/5.6-f/8 to get the maximum performance on the lense and keep as much as I can in sharp focus (landscape or cityscape for example)
The wide aperture and all the glass is there to give you sharp image, the maximum aperture is there to give the most light if you ever need it.
The main thing you want to concentrate on is your subject and how much you want to keep in focus or how much separation you want from the background if you even want any. That piece of glass is excellent, just go out, shoot with it and keep your subject the number one priority.
