There is no "nigh" sound in Japanese. It 'should' be pronounced "nee-ko-n".

That said, who gives a fuck. Nobody talks about how most people butcher "Canon", "Subaru", "Honda" or a slew of other Japanese company names.

Brit here. I pronounce it "NIH-kon" because that's how it looks to me like it should be pronounced. I presume this is because of multiple unconscious assumptions about the 'correct' pronunciations of words which have accumulated in my brain over three decades of speaking British English in Britain with a British accent.

If you come from a different cultural and linguistic background you will have different assumptions to inform what you think of as the correct pronunciation of a proper noun from (potentially) halfway round the world, and as long as I can understand what you're trying to say, I'm not going to try and tell you you're empirically wrong in how you pronounce something.

I'm genuinely puzzled that anyone would think this sort of thing is a big deal, but I guess if such attitudes are to be found then /p/ is as good a place as any to go looking...

The japanese started producing affordable knockoffs, and accordingly commandeered the name: Nikon
But because the japanese are japanese, and Nippon, better known at the time as Nihon.. naturally pronounced it Nee-kon, similar to nee-hon or nee-pon.
So technically Nye-kon may have been initially more correct, but it was instantly and appropriately spoken as nee-kon.
Unlike many other appropriations I consider both to be as correct as each other, because really they both are. And it is much more natural for non japanese to say nye-kon.
I tend to say nee-kon, or both.
Blame americans. they like to alter words to suit their own purposes.

What a load of bullshit. Everything in this post is wrong.
Zeiss Ikon was a camera company, not a camera.
The German pronounciation is "ihh-kon".
Nikon == Nippon Ikon.
Both Zeiss Ikon and Nikon existed long before the first SLR was invented.

"Nih-kon" is the only correct pronounciation.
Hearing "Neye-kon" doesn't rustle me though, I've learned to filter out all the dumb mispronounciations by Americans. Same with "déjà vu" (not "dayja voo"), "über" (not "oober"), "niche" (not "nitch"), etc.
