Hey /gear/ I was referred here by the video thread. So I am looking for a tripod for use with my A6300 and was told one of the best ways is the get the legs and head separate but I'm not experienced enough to really know what to look for, I want something that has a decent enough pan, isn't too short and a ssystem I can put a slider on later. I know that is probably all really vague but I was really hoping you guys could throw some suggestions my way! Some anon in video said not to spend more than 80 on the head and 80 on the legs.

Other than that, Sirui and Benro are also worth a look, but they have so many tripods you'll have to browse them on your own.

Okay, there are a bunch of variants on this that are possibly even made by the same company under a different name, but if yours doesn't even have a removable head, it sounds unlikely that it is very similar...

This one is actually good in a lot of situations and has a removable head.

That said, if it will stand in a studio, see if you can't find a cheap Manfrotto 055XPROB or another older tripod.

I guess I got the AFAITH equivalent which is likely worse. Sorry if I'm being hard to help, it's just for some reason I find tripod stuff more confusing than buying a camera. I'd get a VT 4000 Magnus and call it good if I could put a slider on it. Get new leather.

Remove old leather (lots of guides online), it's mostly just flaking it off with an exacto knife, sometimes you need paint stripper.
Buy a new one of whatever color / texture you want from Aki-Asahi. Wait ~10-30 days for it to arrive.
Apply it and you're good as new.

Removable tripod heads (and the tripods they sit on) almost always are mounted with 3/8-16 or 1/4-20 screws, same as cameras.

You definitely can get various kinds of legs. Of course, a hi-hat or mini tripod should be more versatile and stable than most other options, but if you wanted to you could probably shoot with something like depicted $2.5 plastic thing.

However, I suggest you yourself a favor and make everything use typical Arca Swiss (I like these better) or Manfrotto compatible QR plates for everything.
It's much easier if you can leave everything screwed on (heads/clamps below plates and equipment on top of lates) and just use QR mechanisms to swap gear.

It's a little like buying into a camera system, but less expensive (unless you start talking some of the really spendy shit like Really Right Stuff and then it's just as expensive, if not more so).

Now if you want to make your life not so annoying, make sure the parts that you will want to detach quite often (Camera and probably slider, maybe more...) are sitting on Arca or (if you can't help it) Manfrotto plates / brackets...

Just use the *compatible* plates and heads and stuff - it doesn't need to be Arca Swiss or RRS, can be typical Chinese gear.

It is not expensive then. Heads with Arca QR aren't more expensive than other heads. A cheap plate or simple clamp for it is like $5, and I see that some L-bracket specifically made with holes for the A6300's ports is ~$25.

I never had the actual ball head you linked. But it seems exactly like the most popular cheap model on Aliexpress. Well, the same model rebranded and market up by ~25%...

I'm a bit into older, manual lenses. Since I have an entry level Nikon, M48 lenses are out of question (since the lack of infinity focus). I've found these two recently (factory f-mount lenses), but I don't know these lenses at all, and I could not really find enough on the net. Soft, distorted, various defects I don't even know the terminology for. (It's not vignetting, that one seems still just barely fine to me...)

Better, but sample shots seem a bit hazy somehow. And it feels a bit unpleasant to me somehow.

Still not a lens that I'd actually be using, I'd probably take a decent modern $150+ lens any day - but I guess I'm not much of a vintage lens shooter.

I figure they'll be trivially more robust since they probably don't deform permanently quite as quickly.

But if it's a small umbrella, a cheap replacement is like $3.5 with shipping - not really worth thinking about.

Not with this camera. It can do long exposures like any even halfway decent camera, but it's not a good "low light" camera overall.

I thought that the d5300 has, besides from going full frame and spending thousands of euro's, the largest type of frame on the market (correct me if i'm wrong). Also i thought it had quite a high ISO tolerance compared to earlier models. Do you have any suggestions on which camera's preform better?
Also go ahead and shit on my picture :P it is just a Random snapshot I took while visiting germany. I live in the Netherlands.

Sirui's heads are Arca Swiss compatible, not sure about the detachable monopod though. I think they have one model with the detachable monopod but I couldn't tell you if it's travel size or not, you'd have to look it up.

Yep, but all low light cameras *are* basically full frame.

A D5300 or D5500 is fine at ~ISO 1600 to maybe 6400. But that's not very low light. It only just works out when you shoot a wider aperture lens (maybe f/1.4 or wider) with people indoors or perhaps in some street lighting situations... but not very reliably so, and your DoF is also obviously quite narrow at that point.

Current FF low light cameras will do have about equal noise performance at ISO 25600. Which tends to suffice a lot more comfortably on even f/2 or so lenses.

A7S II, A7S would be the typical choice.

Dic&Mic E302C. Or its bigger variant P303C.

(For my body height and purpose -which is not shooting above people's heads-, the E302C does fine.)

I also like the Siruis, some still should be $250-ish.

Speaking of which, the Sirui PS monopods are actually what I use for most purely urban trips / events in the city. Dic&Mic is for everything else, but in crowded locations the Sirui PS is definitely easier.

Anyhow, I'd say I can shoot about ~2 stops different in practice, but I guess technically ISO noise is closer to 1.5 stops different.

Anyway though, if you want to know how much a hunk of gear is worth on the open market, keh is pretty much your best source. They are ULTRA conservative on the grading side (their EX grades are all pretty much exactly like new), and you can add/subtract a couple of hundred bucks based off of local market/what you think you can negotiate down to, but if you want to know how much something's worth, keh is it.

Get both that's 10bit plus color depth capable.

She has the AF-S Nikkor 24-120mm 1:4 that came with the camera. Also an old Micro-NIKKOR 55mm but she uses that for her film cameras.
B&H and Amazon both have the D750 with 24-120mm bundle for $2500.

24-120mm f/4 VR is a great all-in-one lens. If you don't have any FX lenses, it's a great start before getting into the f/2.8 pro zooms and faster primes. The 50mm f/1.8D is only worth a few bucks imho (G version is awesome though).

$1,800 is a great, yet fair price for the combo, based on grey pricing.

Your friend is leading you correctly. I might point you to a 35mm 1.8 instead of the 50mm 1.8 if you can afford it because that'll give you a more general use field of view whereas the 50mm will give you a more portrait field of view, but neither one is bad to own and you'll have fun playing with that faster lens.

But that's a solid beginning setup. It'll be a hot minute before you fully outgrow what it can do.

Aside from that, I'm a fan of the book Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson. When you get your camera, read your manual...check out the info in the sticky (ignore the gear stuff, I don't know when that was updated last), hit up youtube (adorama and b&h both have surprisingly good tutorial videos)...cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials has some good reading too.

Basically, just start googling stuff up and reading about it. When you get your gear, start trying to practice the stuff you're reading about and have fun.

Yes, I too know they have this special thing where they fuck you over with poor service unless you pay even more in advance.

Yea, it IS a stark contrast to how it usually is with other companies, namely that you pay a reasonable fee for expedited service as-needed and don't have any extra requirements like having to own more than the product that is currently damaged...

But with their position in the market and Sony also having jumped on the same faggot train, I unfortunately can't recommend to drop them completely. Doesn't mean that you have to suck it up. Yes, the risk costs less on average, why else do you think they offer this "service"?

One was EXC with a MAJOR mold problem. The other was like new with numbers carved all along the side.

I've had my eye on Sony's 30mm macro lens for my a6000. I've tried reversing a couple of legacy lenses, but the focus window is tiny and a pain to deal with in the field.

Outside of the 30mm id like to find a Tamron 90mm 2.5, but I'd rather get one through Amazon since I've got a shitload of credit there.

That's really a form factor problem. Pushing that much data both uses a lot of juice and creates a lot of heat. That tiny body just can't handle that much heat. It's like how you'll never see the kind of performance on a cell phone that you'll see on something the size of a laptop (assuming comparable tech levels of each).

To really fix that, they'll have to entirely re-engineer the electronics...and even then it's not a sure thing that it's even possible.

Eh, I'd actually probably say that your choice is between the 70D (which has ML and a little less video quality than the 80D, not sure how they stack up on low light though) and the GH4, add that if you're going hard in the paint for video, I'd say that the deciding factor between those two is do you want video quality (GH4) or do you want autofocus (70D).

Based on what impression? I think it's actually really quite fine on mine, right to the finish.

Certainly, the head that comes included is less fancy than a really good one, but even that one is actually quite good. The deficits are mostly about fine control when you use it half-arrested, the base tilting a little (quarter degree or so?) when you have the horizontal pan unlocked, and tiny details like that.

I myself have had no problems with also over a thousand (not a few thousand I guess) dollaryoos on it.

Small area or spot AF and you kinda have this problem solved on a good AF system, unless you are working with an extremely narrow DoF and want to get the eyes right.

Of course even there, something like Sony's EyeAF will typically be faster than MF when you shoot handheld (which would still be quite typical even for many model shots)

Like this guy says, the head tilts a little if you put a heavy camera. However, this only happens if the panorama swivel is not tightened. When you tighten it, it doesn't tilt anymore. In any case, you're buying into the tripod here, head is nice for newbies who don't have a separate head yet.

I currently have a Nikon D40, its Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens and a Nikkor 35mm f/1.8.

My budget is 550 to 700 Euros. I've got two options in mind:
- Get a new or slightly used D5300 or D5500 and continue using my lenses
- Get a new or slightly used D3300 and a Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 lens to replace the Nikkor 18-55mm

Another consideration is getting a Sony Alpha 6000 with kit lens as I mainly use the camera for vacation, especially hiking.

Any thoughts?

I have a penis and happen to love olympus. The ibis vs low light capabilities of larger sensors will put the olympus on top for static subjects in low light. Also the small size means I can carry two lenses in my pants cargo pocket with extra batteries, no bag needed. AF is near instant unless tracking for sports. (Not a selling point.) IQ is on par or better with anything else in that resolution count.

I haven't seen that review, but my E302C clearly is vertical regardless if the legs are extended fully or retracted fully or in one of the prepared three angles you can lock them in.

Not like uneven legs would be something easy to miss anyhow, the head has a spirit level already included, and that's obviously not the only reason photographers would notice anything more than *extremely* (read, not relevant to stability of a tripod0 marginal slants.

Didn't really do that either, but no, it doesn't even seem like that would be a realistic way this could fail.

Looks dumb and awkward at first, but is really fucken handy for a discrete mounting system as opposed to straps. Just make sure you have a very strong, leather belt.

Also, get the all metal Pro version. Worth the dollarydoos if you carry any significantly valuable gear.

1st: i'm between Fuji XT-10 and Sony Alpha a6000

2nd: i'm biased when it comes to kit lenses. but my budget is not high.... i was thinking of a wide (12 or 14) + regular (27 or 35) but the total w/ Fuji would cost me $1500. that's too much for me

3rd: i don't know much about the sony lenses, if anyone could advise me about that i'll be thankful

4th: about my preconception w/ the kit lenses: can anyone take 2 pictures, one w/ the 35mm and other with a kit lens in 35mm?
preferably showing depth of field

If you want to keep a compact body, go for a Sony NEX-6 if you're destitute, but the a6000 is still one of the gold-standard APS-C cameras around. The a6300 is an incremental upgrade, but I highly doubt you would be able to afford it.

Yep. That's what's it's really designed for. Allows you to mount gear on your should strap, but I love using it as a holster.

They also offer a neat lens-mount adapter so you can change lenses, essentially one handed. Probably my next accessory purchase.

Consider that I'm not an expert on the subject to feel confortable about doing this decision by myself.

My question is what reasonably affordable camera could be useful if I wanted to take shots like the one in the picture? I'm going to Norway some weeks and wouldn't want to miss the opportunity to take some beatiful sky pictures like this one. I guess it has a lot of editing, anyway.

A fast wide angle lens would also help. You can get a chinese knock off versio n of the sigma 18-35 for like $50 and it's fine

The 18mm is still trash, and the 35mm isn't what you would call lightning fast, but their autofocus is improved.

Anyway, the best bet would be mirrorless for the small size. Sony, Fuji, and m4/3 are the only ones worth looking at.

Sony e-mount (a6300, a7 series) can take great photos and video, but none of them have an LCD that flips around though so they would be out (though it will let you control it wirelessly with a smartphone).

Fuji would work, but limited video options. They have some nice affordable lenses even though the selection is rather limited.

Best bet would be micro four thirds, specifically the panasonic gh4 which is great for video. The m43 sensor is smaller than the Fuji and Sony sensors which means worse low light performance, but it is considerably larger than a cellphone or point-and-shoot.

Be careful buying a camera in Japan. With the exchange rate it is more expensive, warranties are not honored outside of Japan, and some companies release Japanese only firmware models.
