So I'm thinking about buying a d500 and a 50-100 sigma art lens.
Does anyone have any dirt to discredit tony northrup? Was he a gay? Did he shoot porn? Does he not make any money and is a trust fund kiddy?
Also is he a cuck or is that his kid?
I actually like him alot, I'm just not sure what his background/history is.

Cant speak on the nikon, but i have the sigma its a sharp lens but unless you are on a tripod i wouldn't recommend shooting wide open at 100mm cause the DOF is too sensitive

Lost my shit.. but from what I gather he was a dude who worked for MS doing manuals and guides, then did it on his own before moving to photography.

He definitely takes a "sharpness trumps all" and takes stuff like dxomark to a new degree of austism but his general messages are pretty good if you read his stuff.

He kind of emphasis creating photos rather than taking snapshits. The stuff that makes a "OK" picture good.

It can be thought about in those terms. Focal distance is huge in determining depth of field. To get the same subject size in crop vs. full frame, you'll be the crop multiple farther away using crop which will have a noticeable effect that's linked to that new distance (the precise nature of that link depends on the characteristics of that particular lens because of the rate of falloff, but you can pretty easily ballpark it).

It's a lot like how you can measure practically everything in photography in stops.

It's not a bad technique if you don't have a tripod or filter with you, but I'd rather use a tripod and nd filter than try to blend and merge 30 images in post. It's just easier to work with one image.

If you want to compare DoF between different formats, multiplying f-stop (and focal length) by crop factor is legit, no?

It all depends on how you frame the question:

No, it's not legit if you are talking about the same subject to camera distance. The DoF is the same on whatever format. This however doesn't make sense because no one uses a 50mm (for example) on a crop the same way that they use a 50mm on a full frame.

When you look at it from the field of view and equivalent framing (filling the frame with the same amount of the subject in both cases, which moves the full frame closer or the crop farther away from the subject), then yes, it is correct...kinda. You still have falloff rates which vary based off the lens designs which muddle the numbers, but like I said earlier, you're still well enough in the ballpark...so basically, the only way anyone really cares about outside of purely academic discussions of the physics involved, yes, it is entirely legit.

Tony thinks the Canon 70-200 f/2.8 is the only lens in its class that doesn't suffer from focus breathing (becoming wider when focusing closer).

Personally I think it's the only lens that does, but becoming longer when focusing closer.

Anyone can confirm my theory?
