Dear /p/

My girlfriend is due to december and we are expecting twins :D

At the moment I am looking voor a good lens to capture the beautiful moments.

My gear at the moment:
Canon 50D
24-105mm F/4.0L
50mm F/1.8 II

I am wondering about the following lenses:
Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM Lens
or
Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens

I'll use the lenses indoors.

The 24 is a nice lens to capture the whole scene and the 85 a beautiful portrait lens.

Wich lens whould you buy?

Easy. Get the 85. It's mich, much more useful as a portrait lens. For shooting babies, you're never trying to get a massive scene.

My little guy is 10 mos old, and the 85 has been my go to lens for him, indoors and out. I've got a 24, but I don't think I've ever used it on him.

This is good for architecture but not for babies, you'll get facial distortion like a motherfucker.

On your 1.6 crop sensor, this is the full frame equivalent of 136mm. I have a full frame 5D Mark III and my go to portrait lens is a 135mm. It's a great focal length and just what I would recommend to anyone looking for baby or portrait lens for crop sensor.

have you ever seen a fish eye? facial distortion happens because focal length. Google image search "lens+facial+distortion" and you'll see lots of comparison charts for reference.

I'll bite because I'm curious how you're going to attempt to bend this into calling it FACIAL distortion.

It's caused by the subject:camera positional relationship, which is yes most often determined by the field of view of the lens, so it's rather intellectually dishonest to to talk about distortion between different sensor sizes on the same focal length because the perspective will be different to achieve the same framing.

OP wants to take portraits of babies. Wide angle lenses distort things. If he's going to use a lens that distorts to take picture of his little smiling babies, then you know what it's going to distort? Their faces. I don't think OP gives two fucks whether anything in the image distorts, nor do I think he gives two fucks about the mechanics and optics distortion in general. He wants to take pictures of his babies.

Any photo you can't take with a 24-105/4 with IS and at 50/1.8 don't need to be taken.

You're fucking delusional if you think that shitty kit lens at 24 or 85 would be the same as shooting with the prime. The difference between 4 and 2.8 or 4 and 1.8 is fucking huge. Light gathering between stops is exponential. If OP wants to take indoor pics, either of those lenses would be a vast improvement on what he has.
