hard to shoot portraits with 35mm, you have to press camera right into peoples face

Ok, serious portrait now.

I think it is the only usable picture from the set of 50 or so. The girl is my friend and she was shy as hell and I don't have a clue how to direct models. How do you learn to direct?

Also the image is cropped because yet again I wasn't close enough with my 35mm.
