>>2922342It makes sense why you would think it looks like Mardi Gras. This parade is a Caribbean adaptation of the Carnival celebrations. So it shares a lot of the same imagery and pageantry.
The parade is held in Brooklyn on Labor Day as a celebration of West Indian/Caribbean heritage. It runs along the major thoroughfare Eastern Parkway.
Sadly, it is known for being marked with violence. It kicks of with a pre-dawn party/procession through the streets known as J'Ouvert which happens around 4AM but draws people from all around into the streets to party from 11PM the night before. Several shootings at this year's J'Ouvert. A couple of times during the daytime parade people thought they heard shots and took off running.
It's a lot of fun though!
