Hello, /p/

Beginner photographer here, I need your assistance on how to guide people to pose for photos well. Are there any good cheatsheets or something for this kind of thing? Perhaps you can tell me about your own experience on what works best for pictures?

Talking about simple photoshoots with friends & family, nothing too fancy or for earning money (yet)

both portraits and full body shots

This is IMO a pretty difficult thing to learn.
I usually tag along with a pro as a 2nd shooter, JFK style.
If you do this then pay close attention to what the pro is doing, and why.

Good advice. Offer to be a photography assistant. You'll be doing grunt work but you'll learn a lot assisting a pro. Also you just gotta get out there and give it a try. Try with friends then occasionally with non models who want their photos taken.

Two things:

(1) You need to develop good interpersonal skills. You've got to have a good rapport with your clients. It's hard because of lot of people who gravitate towards photography are probably quiet introverts. But you've got to get past that. You've got to own the situation, because, at the end of the day, it's on you to make it work. People aren't going to naturally get into the right position. You've got to be comfortable with telling them directly what to do. This starts the second you arrive at the shoot. You need to have a good working conversation with your clients before you start clicking. Starting shooting after 20 minutes of awkward silence while you get your shit together is never going to work.

(2) You must use words and be specific. This seems obvious, but it's not. You can't be vague or beat around the bush. You've got to be as direct and unambiguous as possible. You don't like where they're standing? Tell them to move. You don't like their hand there? Tell them to move it. Tell them *where* to move it. Learning about poses in theory is fine, but you've got to actually tell them what to do. It ain't gonna happen by accident.

Show don't tell is an applicable idea in this situation. Many times I've found myself just doing what I want my subject to do and having them mirror it. Then its just a matter of slight adjustments that you can easily describe like "move your right hand up a little."

The people that need a lot of direction are those inexperienced in front of a camera. When you're shooting with experienced models then you don't need to worry about directing so much because they know how to make themselves look great immediately.
