Anyone here use film cameras in extreme environments instead of taking their digital gear?

I took a film camera to a 800 person campout because no one wants to steal shit they dont know how to use and because it would cost thousands of dollars less to replace if damaged or stolen.

I think my primary concern in being in some extreme environment would be the battery not operating at its max capacity due to temperature. The problem further compounded by recharging concerns.

How do people do it with their FF digital cameras when they go on long trips into the wilderness? Solar powered chargers any good?

I think I read somewhere that Canadian Rangers use Nikon FM2s lubricated with a special oil to take pictures in the north for the extreme cold.

Yeah, I only ever bring fully manual shutter cameras with me when I go canoeing or to deserts, usually a vivitar v2000. I don't have to worry about it ruining much electrical stuff seeing that I don't use ttl light meters, and I'm willing to sacrifice shit 5$ lenses

Yep. My Bronica has seen Midwestern blizzards and West Coast winter storms (torrential downpours). When I had a Mamiya 6 I shot the Olympic craziness in Vancouver, shot through 3-4 PNW winters, and took it on numerous trips including Vietnam during the wet season and the deserts of Utah in the middle of summer. My Stylus Epic has been through extreme winter conditions (down to -30), taken into mosh pits, and I just shot with it in a typhoon today. My Nikonos has gone on multiple river and beach trips and been down to ~15m underwater.

My A7 on the other hand has seen a touch of rain and that's it. It's nice having equipment that you know can A. handle crappy conditions and B. Be easily replaced if something goes wrong. I was hesitant to take the Mamiya 6 out when moisture was a potential problem...which is part of the reason why I eventually sold it. I don't like worrying about my gear.
