Okay, this camera apparently shoots at 36MP, but it's not like we didn't have sensors and (for the burst rate) computer parts for that in common use already.

I'm very close to ordering a RX100 iii. And I'm hoping the small form means I'll always have it with me and I'd actually take some very good quality photos (IQ wise, I know I'm not a good photog but I'll at least work on it if I have a camera with me all the time).

Plus, it's a good price for where I live ($650 AUD new)

Please help push me over the edge.

No matter, took 'em fucking long given that the computer-side muscle required to process the sensor data was already available in production smartphones years ago.

They're the ones controlling the sensors too, so getting a fat data bus for a fast sensor readout also is their own choice (or choice against).

Have you considered using a better backpack and/or bag for your camera so it's accessible with less of a hassle?

Apart from that, I guess a RX100 is a easy P&S. But it only has "somewhat okay"-tier IQ, not "very good".

A RX1R II or A6000/A6300 with a good prime maybe could count as "very good", as long as you're being generous and not comparing them too much against the high-end FF setups.

Posted in the past thread with no response. Thoughts and opinions? Has anyone on /p/ purchased one?

Really getting tired of my 6D, primarily the autofocus, and could use a jump in megapixels. Debating on grabbing one.

I usually have just a bag or backpack with a side pocket to access the camera (top pocket like on a NatGeo bag works too for bags).

No. It's a P&S compact, it costs more
-not less- to get to any DSLR's / MILC 's image quality with them.

Even a cheap D3300 with kit lens would do much better than the RX100 III.

Basically, check hard to see if you can't use the A6000 somehow, eh.

Yeah you really got me looking. I do think I can stretch my budget to it.

The a6000 is only 50g heavier than rx100 and not that much bigger. The K-r is double the weight of rx100.

I really need a good lens recommendation though. The kit lens looks like it sticks out a bit from the grip, and most kit lens aren't very good either right?

When traveling, I mainly shoot with a 30mm Sigma f/2.8 (there are more comparable options - the newer Sigma 30mm f/1.8, 28mm Sony and more ...), plus a 12mm Samyang for city/landscapes.

YMMV depending on what you want to shoot.

Not really. This one will get you far better shots which you can crop. It will do so in more light conditions, you have better burst rates... yadda yadda.

That said, I *do* occasionally switch the lens for that Samyang 12mm, landscapes just look nicer on a very wide panorama and I don't want to hugin edit every shot.

Now, if that's not appealing to you, sure, just work with the kit zooms (16-50 and/or 55-210) or whatever other zoom you buy. Still going to be a lot better than the RX100 III.

I've been out of the digital loop for ages but I'm needing to invest in some new gear.
I'm wanting a single system for shooting documentaries and music videos & stills photography - again documentary and landscapey stuff.

I was thinking picking up the a7r II for the 4k, good sensor and nice ergonomics although I'm a bit stumped on lens choices. Stick to Sony/zeiss glass or get a metabones and some Canon lenses. I'll probably pick up a 24-70 as a first and then a few primes later down the line.
I've just head the canon 24-70 2.8 mkii is a load better than the Sony equivalent? It's thrown me a bit so I'm really on the fence.
What does /gear/ recommend? Sony with metabones, Sony + native glass or a different system entirely?

Could work too, but I'd not do it unless seriously low on money or this is just a short-term solution and to be replaced soon.

The A6000 has an EVF, better sensor, much better AF, a flash hotshoe and a lot of other things you might want while you shoot with it for the next 2+ years.

It's one of the lenses that is marginally better than the Sony pendant. But just marginally. Check here:

For the most part, the Sony lenses actually win, even if they also tend to cost more. And they also have a tendency to be a bit lighter in weight.

The lineup of *primes* in the normal range also is quite amazing.

That said, nothing really wrong with a Sigma MC-11 and some Sigma glass or adapting Canons if you want them for some reason.

I own a Sony 18-55 zoom, got it for about 100$ used. At its longest I shoot it at f 8-11, at its shortest I shoot at 5.6
It's not that bad, I still prefer my primes for image quality but the OS is really good

That said, you get less performance for your money. The closest match for the A6000 is probably an OM-D E-M5 II (it is a bit better, actually). But you can see how that affects the price tag.

That said, if you want smaller size and accept a bit to much worse AF / sensor performance:, Yea, an Olympus or Panasonic or other MFT might be your choice. The zoom lenses certainly are smaller on that.

It is cheaper to buy pretty much every brands cameras in the states.

Plus domestic Japanese cameras from Sony have a language lock. It is laughably easy to bypass, but it is still an annoyance.

But if you look at the 5xmm, 85mm, 70-200 f/2.8 and f/4 and so on the Sonys are usually better or equal and lighter. You really don't necessarily want Canon lenses for everything.

I don't like the Canon entry-level bodies.

For anything below a 80D, I'd rather take a recent Nikon / Sony / Pentax in the same price category.

That said, of course a 650D can take good pictures if you use a good lens on it and you have enough light... it's just very "meh".

Rokinon was (is?) a trademark brand thing that apparently rebranded various Japanese lenses in the past, and now the Samyang lenses.

Noob question here. The d7200 is slightly out of my price range. Currently I have my eye on the d5500/5300 as it seems to be a nice mid-rangy entry model . To explain: I need a decent DSLR for college and afterwards. (Journalism/photography)

What I mean is, is it worth to spend the extra cash on the 7200 if this means that it will be better suited to evolve as time goes on, and as I learn more about the craft, or will it also become obsolete/outdated?

anyway I would recommend a D7x00 over a D3x00 or D5x00. The 3x00 and 5x00 are entry-level cameras for soccer moms who want an SLR because it looks all pro and serious, but don't ever actually intend to take the thing off auto mode or put anything other than a kit lens on it. There's two models to capture the people who always buy one model up from the cheapest. They're mostly the same, the 5x00 has a swiveling screen (I think they're making it a touchscreen now) and more scene modes. The D7x00 is where Nikon deigns to give you a proper camera. You get dual control wheels, a proper pentaprism viewfinder (the lower-end ones use pentamirrors, which are cheaper and lighter but give a dimmer image in the viewfinder) and a screw-drive motor and compatibility with older lenses in general.

So yes, getting a D7x00 is worth it if you intend to actually take up photography with some intention of learning things and getting better. You'll still be wanting to spend more money on lenses later on, mind you, and all this does assume that you've decided you want to be in Nikon's ecosystem.

ding ding ding. There are some differences here and there but pretty much any photographer can find a lens to suit their needs in either system. That goes all the way from bread-and-butter lenses like nifty fifties all the way to exotic supertelephotos, tilt-shift glass, and such. Also pretty much every third-party manufacturer supports both mounts, so you have your pick of Sigma, Tamron, Tokina, Samyang, Zeiss, those Chinese lenses that are starting to pop up, and so on.

It comes down mostly to which camera feels better in your hand, that you like the controls and interface of. Head to a store that sells them and pick some up.

Yes. But I don't think you'll lose more than a stop before the temperature stabilizes.
Try doing a dozen shots in a darkened room before going out to get an idea what to expect.

You can sort of tell that 20mm F2 lens is really high quality by its size/weight ratio.

It's one heavy motherfucker, but it's very small for it s weight. It's solid glass and metal inside that baby.

MF has a lot more design freedom. AF lenses can be perfectly good, but the elements in such design needs to be as thin, small and light as possible.

MF has no restriction on size of any optics.
If there is anywhere you can take advantage of this, it's in the wide end.

Samsung is basically ded in central Europe, no lenses or accessories officially anywhere, they exited the market swiftly about a year ago here.

While trying the 7200 felt really good in my hands and i like the pictures / IQ it produces with proper lenses.

The A7... series has a certain charm to it not to mention the FF sensor, but it's out of my overall price range.

I want to do some paid gigs with the new gear, and I do not want normies to harass me because they can't differentiate a 100 dorra point and shoot and a DSLR quality ILC camera, annoying the fuck out of me. (yeah, I know it's kinda autistic, but you can't deny if you want to impress normies for their moneyz the D7200 is a proper tool in this price range, in terms of IQ I dont see much difference between the d7200 and a6000.

Warranty is officially 2+ years under EU law even if bought anywhere else in the EU, no? You know, the whole 1999/44/EC thing...

I don't think you qualify for the additional professional services (Sony Imaging PRO Support / Nikon Professional Services) either way? And Nikon doesn't have a NPS office in Hungary, apparently.

So either way, you'll send a package to an address, rent or buy a camera meanwhile so you can continue shooting, and wait for like a month or some shit like that until the customer services in the respective countries have forwarded your package to like Lithuania or Germany for fixing and your camera is good again... unless you pay the same "express" fees or whatever as it'd cost to get a non-warranty camera serviced.

Or is that, too, different in Hungary?

Rokinon is making 2 AF lenses just for that mount, which is quite a risky move of them since they can't port those lens designs to DSLRs.
Tokina has announced they are making 3 AF lenses after their Loxia 21 competitor.

The growth is there, and it's picking up a lot of steam.

I think they're trying to battle it out against Batis/Loxia line up, and use more attractive pricing to steal all the sales.
Which is pretty smart since neither Sony nor Zeiss wish to make that goddamn 35mm F1,8 / F2 lens.

It means the shutter doesn't close to flush the buffer and then open again to expose. It is open already in liveview then flushes without closing the shutter then exposes and closes the shutter. No moving parts to nudge the camera during exposure making the shot perfectly still.

Well as of Photokina there are three companies producing AF lenses (Firin, Rokinon, and Tokina).

Unless Sony really fucks something up, FE is gonna be the best mirrorless choice this timw next year.

As it stands now, very few mounts (and none of them mirrorless) beat FE when it comes to image quality. It is just that price and size are xompletely fucked for most FE lenses.

Definitely Pentax, the Canon Rebels are the worst possible options currently and will be for quite some time.
If you are so into landscapes why not go for the K-70 with a sealed 18-55 kit lens? It has that new pixel-shift resolution you will like very much further on.
Your other options are the Nikon entry bodies D3300 and D5500 but considering the features offered still the Pentax is the better value.

With landscape and portraits the AF is not a problem. Pentax has trouble with tracking continuous AF, that is a different AF mode. Single AF is pretty much spot on with any camera, except those older few Fujis.
But we are talking about entry level cameras and Canon has an older AF design in all their entry bodies. Still those perform well with single and mediocre with tracking. Very similar performance, maybe Pentax has more leverage in low light.

The K-S2 has KAF4 mount support through a firmware update, it will be more useful when you buy new lenses like the new 55-300 PLM lens. I would get the K-S2 over the K-50 just because of this. Futureproof.

What else could you want? Fuji's covered the pro spectrum from 10-24, 16-55, 50-140, and 100-400. The consumer segment has the 18-55, 16-50, 50-230, 55-230, and 18-135. Do you want them to go full Nikon and do every 18-xx from 35-300?

And on the prime end, there's nearly everything you could ever ask for. Portrait, wide, normal. No point asking for supertele; none of the MILC brands are ready for that except M43.

Personally I would opt for the Xpro-1 or X100s if you're looking at the older Fuji Xs, but that's just personal taste since I remember hearing that the OVFs on the older Fujis were pretty meh.

Also maybe look into the NEX-6/7 if you want to go even smaller while still retaining a APSC censor and interchangeable lenses.

It's a cheap lens from a no-name company that will probably chromab and flare like hell. It'll work fine on that K1000 you have in the back, but it's not anything really good or valuable.

As for the stuff on there you probably rotate the barrel all the way clockwise until the MACRO bit is over the red dot, or you pull the lens forward AND THEN rotate it all the way clockwise.

I'm unhappy with the weight and size of my DSLR (Nikon D7000) for every day shooting and I'm unwilling to shell out for a mirrorless right now and I want something durable that I can take around without any serious concern for its safety.

I like the idea of an instant film camera because I get immediate results, however that comes at the cost of quality and the surprise of developing film at a time separate from when the photos were taken.

I don't like how other instant cameras look, so even though this one is $300 I'm more than willing to pay for that because I'm a Leica dick rider.

Other non-instant film cameras I'm considering are a ricoh gr or an olympus xa2.

I've also thought about a Nikon f/3t but its still borderline heavy/big and not really an on-the-go snapper like I'm looking for.

Thin, fine, microfiber towels for grease and sticky shit. [Paper towels or your finely woven shirts should work too, but microfiber is best IMO].
Buy a bunch of small ones so you don't need to keep track of which area of which towel has smeary grease on it, but can just use them once or twice and use the next until you washed it.

Makeup brush or air blower for dust.

Significant numbers of any of these can be ordered for like $1-5 (each item category), from China.

Macro pretty much means that you can get really close to a subject and take close up shots. Like when you see people take closeup shots of say the detail of food. Telephoto means that it's a lens where the focal length (in this case a maximum of 210mm) is longer than that of the body of said lens thanks to the design of the optics.

In laymans terms you can zoom in on something that you couldn't normally do with a "normal" focal length of 40-50mm, and you can also focus on objects closer to the lens than normal non-macro lenses. Put it on your K1000 and see what I mean.

The really small ones usually use 4-element Tessar designs, which don't really get sharp until F11-16. This negative doesn't matter that much on LF, because you usually want to stop down at least about there to get adequte DOF anyway.

More over you have the bellows/draw distance that essentially function as the "lens tube" on a DSLR lens, making the

A normal 300mm lens will still require a ~300mm flange distance between the film plane and the lens - it just so happens that on a LF camera, most of this distance is taken up by the bellows instead of the actual lens element itself.

Moreover, on smaller formats a 300mm long lens (for example) is pretty unwieldly - this is why they employ a lot more telephoto designs for their large primes, which leads to reduced physical flange distance at the cost of size & weight in the form of more/bigger lens elements. It works OK on smaller formats, but on LF would quickly become troublesome.

Tele's aren't that popular on LF cameras for a variety of reasons. 1) Focusing with a telephoto is much more troublesome if you want to use lens movements 2 ) Size/weigh. I currently have a G7 with the 14-140mm kit lens and the 25mm 1.7.
Now the times has come to the the kitlens go and get the 24-70mm equivalent zoom that many recommend to me and I found 2 options:
>A: Panasonic 12-35mm 2.8
>B: Sigma 17-50mm 2.8 + a cheap AF speedbooster i found from Kipon
They are both stabilized and parfocal with constant aperture and both will cost me between 750-850€ but I can get the Panasonic for cheaper if I'm lucky (I actually missed an amazon sale for 400€ which I still hate me for because I hesitated). The Sigma+speedbooster has the advantage that It opens the EF mount up for me with a faster aperture but the cheap Kipon speedbooster is a certain risk. Also, the in-lens stabilizer of the Canon won't be able to work with the IBIS of future panasonic cameras, if I ever decide to upgrade.

Any pointers?

Some online Tests Show a Bit of Problem with tracking AF, but it also seems that with EVERY Firmware Version, the Adapter gets better.

That's what I was thinking. Now I've gotta do some thinking. I've got a Nikon right now and was planning on either getting something like the Sigma 18-35 for Christmas or selling my gear and updating to the GH4 around Christmas.

If I sell all my gear I'll obviously be out a lens so I'll have to get something to use in the meantime. Probably a Panasonic lens so I don't have to also have the price of a speed booster on top of it.

If I get the lens then I'd probably be buying it with the Canon mount so I won't have to own two speed boosters but then I couldn't use it until I bought the GH4 and speed booster.

A speedbooster doesn't give you a full stop of light (only a full stop of DoF), you lose sharpness, and while I have no idea how well Sigma's OIS plays with a speedbooster, it isn't likely to beat the native OIS of the Panasonic lens.

Also, the Sigma combo is like 2 times the size.

I completely understand that you might prefer ~28mm FF equivalent, but I'd not call it "more versatile".

My main walkaround of choice would be a ~50mm FF equivalent anyhow.

Makes sense of you're on a tight budget. But it's not just for the f/1.4 aperture - it is also a fair bit better at f/2.8, without being as narrow as the (by a good margin best of the three f/2.8 lenses) 60mm f/2.8.

I should have said more versatile for me, just feel like I take more shots at the lower mm

What made the 60 the best? do they just progressively get sharper, less CA and shit?

Not your guy but DFD is Depth From Defocus. DFD is Panasonic's relatively new auto focus system. You can read a bit about it here:

Yes. The 60mm f/2.8 is ~as sharp as it actually gets on the camera.

And the 30mm f/1.4 also gets close at f/2.8.

It's from the era when Panasonic already knew how to make fast AF. There's nothing to worry about.
DFD is a contrast focusing aid that uses known defocus characteristics of the lens. It has a noticeable effect on AF performance during video shooting (way less hunting), but works only with Panasonic's own lenses.

I didn't say it doesn't give more light. I just said that it actually gives less than the advertised 1 stop of light.

Lenses should have the right features, focal length, and you probably want them to be sharp.

Body should have the sensor performance, sensor performance and features that you want. (Canon's entry-level is kinda barren as compared to other systems, you might possibly want to switch vendors if you don't want to go for a higher-end camera).

Personally I went with Sony because I like their high-end primes and the very good sensor performance + feature set on most of Sony's bodies for their respective price. Smaller weight and size on the bodies is also a plus.
