Weird question, I'm going to explain the situation.
My current Fluid pan&tilt head is of a cheap brand and has a non-standard quick-release plate. So now I want to get into a different system and the plates of the ARCA SWISS and RRS variety are very appealing to me, because fine adjustements to the exact point of balance can be made.
What systems are there that work like this, how interhchangeable are they and what are your recommendations for a quick "retrofitting"? (I'd just buy a bunch of cheap plates and mounts and screw the mounts onto my old QR plate etc.).
I would also consider getting one of these long ones with 2 screws because they could act like a flash-rail or a macro-rail

Not that I dislike them, but they're not an actual macro rail. Why not get an actual macro rail, even if it's again Chinese? They're like $15 or so.

There are a bunch of good quality heads, some are arca swiss compatible, some have their own system (Manfrotto), but the better ones have interchangeable plates so you can convert them to arca swiss if you want.
My Manfrotto 498RC4 came with an RC2 top but can be converted to arca swiss too. So far I don't have any problems with RC2.

Quickly checked, the lineup of these clamps on ali (even without heads) has grown huge.

Getting into medium format, and I think I've settled on an ARAX/Kiev 60. I like 2-1/1000 shutter speed, CHEAP lenses, and 6x6 negative. Im also getting one that was refurbed by ARAX, rather than try to mess with possible malfunctioms of an older model from ebay.

What are your thoughts, /p/?

Kiev 60 here. Go for the Arax 88 instead. The former factor of the 60 is a pain in the ass, trust me. Also having multiple backs is a plus.

If you can, get a newer Zeiss 80mm for pentacon six mount. Also get zeiss for wider lenses. The Kaleinar 3B 150 2.8 is a monster but pretty good and cheap

Too bad it looks like it's just a marketing gimmick, since the lens looks tiny and there's no info on sensor size or anything.

Another kiev 60 user here. The camera is great all around, but the form factor is ridiculously big. It's 2x the size of a normal dslr and heavy as all hell. If you can get past that, it's a fantastic camera.

Mamiya 6 will be way more expensive than a Russian, it's also not meant for the same style of shooting as an SLR.

Do you already know what kind of lenses you need? Most MF systems won't have the same number of focal length options as 135.

Don't get a Kiev 88, they're known to have issues if not overhauled by Arax or Hartblei. For your first MF system the Arax 88 is a good choice, you'll get interchangeable backs which is a plus for learning so you can switch film midway through a roll. Get some cheap Russian lenses and then when you find a favorite focal length get the Pentacon Six Zeiss equivalent

I currently own a t2i, and I was suggested to invest in glass before upgrading the body.

I would love to get a 24-70mm f2.8, but it's a bit too far from my price range, even refubrished. I was thinkig about a 17-40 or a 24-70 f4, is this a bad idea? What about an older 24-70?

I had a Kiev 88CM overhauled by Hartblei. It was a decent camera, and honestly I was a little disappointed when I replaced it with a Hasselblad 500CM because in some ways the I liked the Kiev better. Since then I've had a handful of other MF cameras from Bronica, Pentax, Yashica, Mamiya, and others.

Nowadays used MF cameras are so cheap that I'm not sure there's any reason to go for Kiev though. Their quality control is so bad that you need to buy new overhauled cameras with a warranty. Last time I looked at prices, you could get a Pentax 6x7, Bronica SQ, or Mamiya 645 for about the same price, and all are much better cameras.

Ive used MF systems before - Bronica S2A, Bronica SQ-Ai, Mamiya C330. The bronicas had issues that could have been overcome by availability of parts (which I was never able to find) and the mamiya never sat well with me, and never felt that good to use.

Ill be looking for the standard ~80mm, and probably a 130mm. Mostly portrait work. Ill leave the other stuff for my other gear.

Well, I personally want a decent photography device attached to the ergonomics.

And at least for smartphones, that's probably not even only a /p/ concern. Might be just generally half the sales argument as to why someone would get a more expensive, higher-end smartphone these days.

Bigger sensors would lead to better low light performance, assuming they scaled the pixel size to compact camera pixel size and not phone sensor pixel size.
I would kill for a 8 megapixel 1 inch sensor for my iPhone, the low light would be at a pro camera level.

Why not use your phone?

Most high end stuff if okay with splashes and brief immersion. You can grt a waterproof case if you are going diving and need the extra protection too.

Sony covers it as long as the damage isn't due to flaps being left open.

At least, thats what they told me when they replaced mine for free after it died from water damage. I am in Japan though. I hear U.S. Sony can be a dick.

I like the 135mm focal length

If I want that on my cropshit body(canon 1000d), I need a 85mm lens.

But there isn't any dedicated APS-C 85mm primes, so I'm looking at the canon 85 1.8. Browsing DXOmark, it has absolute garbage performance on crop bodies.

Do I just bite the bullet and get the huge sigma 50-100 ?

Look at Sigma 18-35 instead of the 17-40.

I'm not exactly sure at which point you felt that your work was good enough to justify not buying this or why you don't just into FF and a 135 prime that you like.
I however recommend that you bite the bullet, literally.Hanging yourself and doing a neato timelapse to document it via IR remote as your final work. This'll probably work better than the bullet as you won't have to refocus or recompose after the deed is done. After all, you're caring about performance of the 85 1.8 for you cropbabby camera on DXO.

It's honestly not that abysmal. Your only other options are adapting lenses to EF, but your pickings are slim/more expensive/not as convenient.

Only two lenses really come to mind. That outperform it and they're also manual focus and fast, which is going to be an issue for DSLR focusing unless you have liveview.

So I just bought this, coming from a very basic APS-C DSLR. Yeah, I now, there are better alternatives for mirrorless, at least price-wise, but how would I resist this cute thing? Plus I like the size of MFT lenses compared to the ones Sony and Canon makes for their mirrorless.

I can tell there IS a difference in both DOF control and high ISO performance. It is not that bad though, specially compared to entry level DSLRs. The WiFi capabilities are very useful, for both GPS geotagging and sending pics over the Internet. And it has an integrated, although somewhat basic, RAW editor right there, in the camera firmware. It allows you to change exposure, sharpness and white balance, among other things and export it to JPEG.

Get some vintage lenses and have fun.
MFT cameras are really crisp and sharp, because of their tighter raster.
Since I almost only do video with my MFT cam, vintage lenses are awesome to toy with. they give a unique character to the material. Especially lenses that are soft when wide open can make for some dreamy effects.
Generally, adapting lenses and just shooting with them is one of my favourite things to do with an MFT camera

What size reflector should I get as my first?

I'm just looking for a versatile size to learn what a reflector can do etc. Will want to do all sorts of portraiture, but the tighter types likes head+shoulders and upper body are more important than 3/4 or full-body shots

Most shots will probably be the subject holding the reflector out of frame, because finding a volunteer assistant is harder than finding a volunteer model.

Looking to get a square one (pic unrelated) for the better reflective surface/footprint ratio. Mainly considering a 32" or 47" model. Thinking the 47" might just be so big it requires an assistant in general?

no, native lenses beat vintage ones any time unless you're deluding yourself into thinking that coma and chromatic aberration make your shots "unique" (protip: you can easily imitate most optical defects in post if you want, but you can't fix a shit image)

Most automatic lenses on MFT are "fly by wire" focussing, which is the worst form of focussing. Autofocus is well for photography, but for videos, it looks unnatural, especially if the lens is focus-hunting. Fully manual focussing just gives a better feel.
Effects that are attempted to be recreated in post do 2 things:
1. look unnatural
2. eat away on my time, especially in video, because adjusting video takes way more than adjusting photos
If you just do everything in post you are like someone who zooms his kitlens in and out rather than changing position and reframing the shot: not working to improve the shot, but only fixing mistakes later.
There is nothing inherently bad about vintage lenses. The better ones are still in fine conditions and while not super-sharp like modern lenses, very suitable for videos and ontop of that, super cheap compared to modern lenses of comparable stats.

What makes you want to drop digi and go for MF, especially since you don't even have exlerience with film? Bear in mind to get the most out of shooting film you need a decent chunk of change to put towards digitizing (assuming you aren't also plannkng to become a darkroomfag). So while you could get plenty of dope MF rigs for <$500, you could easily add another $500+ for purchasing a worthwhile scanner.

Am I good to go with the D7100 and the Nikkor 55-200mm VR 2? As far as I researched that should work for wildlife/landscape/portaiture. Also do I go with an UV-Filter (maybe the Tiffen 52mm UV Protector filter?) and Lens Hood (maybe the HB-34?) for the protection of the lens?

I would very often hit that tiny 5-6 shot (RAW - not even RAW+JPEG !) D7100 buffer without even doing sports.

And WLAN is really quite useful, too. You can get an ugly stick thing for like 70 Eur on D7100 of course, but that's a pretty shit solution IMO.

And then there is the processor / AF upgrade, too. (And some software stuff, and a bit of battery life... both not terribly big deals except for corner cases, but still nice to have).

Alas, you decide if it is worth it to you.

The buffer's incredibly shallow, but a UHS-1 card shooting 12-bit compressed 1.3x crop RAWs at 5 FPS can shoot indefinitely. And shooting 12-bit compressed uncropped at 5 FPS can still give you about 2 seconds of buffer. It's a compromise, but for most people, it's fine.

So I'm a dentist and I often find myself in a situation where it's useful to take a photograph of patients mouth, eg. to follow a small change in mucosa, record the colour and form of teeth to be used later in construction of dental prosthetics etc. So far I've been taking em with my phone and obviously the quality is far far from what it should be. Only thing I know about dental photography equipment is that in school we used DSLR with big round flash attached around the object.

So any recommendations on camera and flash? All photos obviously are at close or very close range (full face would be biggest, lip smallest). The most important features would be:
1. Extremely good recreation of colours (so prostheses end up same colour as natural tooth)
2. Ability to take very clear pictures of small details like nevus on the lip size of 2x2mm.
3. This is extra and I don't know if this sort of technology exist in cameras, but since schedules are so tight it would be great if photos could be moved to computer wirelessly, fast as possible

You want a macro ring flash.
A macro lens (a modern one that does 1:1 reproduction) Sony do a 90mm and a 50mm, the 50mm is much more affordable.
Sony have wi-fi built in to most of their models

As you're using flash, the whitebalance will set itself to flash, this will give you very accurate, consistent results. Some cheaper flashes may vary in temperature with each fire, you want a strobe type, not constant light.

You could get a ring flash by Godox or Yongnuo or someone.

Or point a strong-ish strobe at the ceiling if it's white.

Macro lens. Best on the market with stabilization and autofocus for relatively quick handheld use currently is the Sony FE 90mm for the E-mount. Another option might be a Canon 100mm macro.

Or perhaps you will manually focus and will use a tripod or deal with holding the camera more still somehow (no stabilization) or stabilize the whole camera (powered gimbal or whatever), in which case there are a bunch of other macro lens options. But the 90mm FE will kinda remain best.

3. Builtin on many modern camera, including pretty much all recent E-mount Sonys. Most of them can even be "live viewed" and triggered by WLAN from your smartphone or computer.

But just downloading the files can be "retrofitted" to older cameras with a special microSD -> SD adapter that acts as WLAN enabled storage device. [They're not even very expensive if you buy one in China - $20-25 or something] . And a lot of photo software (or file transfer software) can be made to automatically download the new files. But you can't trigger the camera directly using that.

Sony has free software for Windows and smartphones and you can get Capture One for cheap.

Other cameras may also work with Lightroom (which I'll however caution can be pretty slow on higher resolution files even as viewer & with very basic edits - wouldn't recommend it for this purpose, despite fairly nice collection management tools).

Sturdy enoigh that you can support a Mamiya press with the 250mm f5 (as well as anything is going to support that), a 4x5 field should be a piece of cake in comparsion. Still will want to use a cable release of course to minimize the shake.

Keep in mind, the lens expands when in use and retracts when not. It's only a pancake when you are not using it, but as far as I know, the Panasonic pancake is exactly the same.

So thinking of downsizing to a Sony a7 system. I do a fair bit of nightclub photography but also work the occasional press event and even rarer, weddings and birthdays.

Which one should I go for?

a7S II or a7R II?

Low-light performance or high-megapickle detail?

Also have a plethora of EF lenses, so I would need to adapt them, for now.

Most of the Weight comes from Electronic lenses for larger Formats.
For some reason E-Mount lenses tend to be incredibly heavy compared to similar lenses.
If you want to save some money consider getting a passive flycam rather than an active gimbal

The lens I use the most is my EF 8-15mm f/4L USM, which isn't really a particularly large lens. My 5D Mark IV is just overkill for nightclub work, while something like an a7 series camera is just easier to work the room with.

I also live in the driest widely habited state in the world. No opportunity for moister to seep in, except for stray drinks of course.

A7r II still does fantastic 4k in asp-c mode which is fine.

If you want to adapt EF lenses with good AF get the A7r II. Most of the adapters are great on it, Id get the MC-11 adapter.

A7s II is CDAF only. The adapters are shit, and the MC-11 so-so/reasonableish.

Coming from an A7s owner who loves his camera but just wants that there PDAF.

Low light performance on it is spectacular.

But before you do, best look at lenses, whatcha interested in? Almost any Canon lens works with the Metabones IV or the MC-11, but I am unsure of their lowlight performance.

CDAF is actually fine and fast when you use native lenses, just the adapter makers are useless cunts who dont know what theyre doing and cant make it work properly.

Im pretty sure Sony tweaked their cameras to make the adapters work well on those cameras since the A7r II (nb: all PDAF models).

The adapters are good on PDAF camera models.

Look at Tokinas and Chinons. I Love the build quality of Chinons. Most Canons were Made of cheap plastic. Many Vintage lenses are in the same price category so you barely have to pay for better quality.

Complete amateur photocunt here. Was looking at DSLR but after much reading and pushing from you fags, I think a compact system camera is the way to go. The a5000 seems to be good for around what I wanted to spend on a Nikon D3300, but if you can tell me why the a6000 is worth £150 more I can stretch my budget to it. Is it really that much better? The photo is straight from the camera, without any modification. Apparently the camera applies some autocorrection for the lens at firmware level in the background. It's not something you can actually turn off, but since it is in the MFT specification, it should work the same on Panasonic cameras and now also on the new Xiaomi.

You can avoid it using specific raw converters. So I assume you shot Jpeg or used Lightroom - That's distortion I can live with, since this lens is replacing both my 14-45 IS and my 15mm f8 pancake.

Note: Distortion correction might only work on Olympus bodies with an Olympus lens. This is especially bad for Black Magic MFT cameras, which suffer from a lack of corrections.

Has anyone had issues with connecting their canon cameras directly to their PC via USB, specifically through Windows 8.1?

Having been on the Canon website, it's specified that a specific driver isn't required as it shares a generic one used across multiple USB devices.

Completely depends on the camera on how that works.

A lot give you direct USB Mass Storage or at least MTP access, but there are other protocols, and you might have to pick the appropriate one from a selection of protocols in your camera first.

Make sure you use a good cable too, for instance there are a bunch of USB->microUSB cables that are wired ONLY for charging.

Even though it's a little heavier and more expensive, I'd probably go with the p303c because it only has a single center column (e302c has 2 and it bothers me how the head sits so high from the legs, especially when extended).

Yes, the Dic&Mic tripods are solid. The $110-120 E302C from first hand experience and the P* from reports here and elsewhere.

Not sure about their monopod.

Sirui, Benro and other brands also are great - though they cost more. Anyhow, China can into quality tripods.

Well, I guess it depends on how you interpret that, but it reads like the requirements for a kit of expensive glass (each about his whole budget or more).

But I guess we both agree that he can actually get a low midrange APS-C or MFT for this budget.

It won't take all lighting conditions, not all glass to be "versatile" will be included, "rugged" and the useful service life until smartphones look better again might be relative... but I guess it should work a lot better than his smartphone right now.

They are usually a good choice for landscapes, sure.

I recommend the Samyang 12mm f/2 if you do get one for the A6000. It's actually relatively inexpensive for a good wide-angle lens, but at ~$330 (direct import price on eBay or such) it might still bust your budget a little.

If you can't afford it right away, perhaps tile kit lens shots into a panorama with Hugin? Leads to higher resolution pictures, but of course also creates small issues with anything that might have moved between shots, and a bit more work on your computer.

Figures some of the photo brand backpacks / bags might be fake, but from all I know (also from what I heard here), they're still qualitatively as good as the originals.

Besides, if you can prove it is a fake with photos, the Aliexpress staff will trigger a refund even if the seller for some reason doesn't want to.

Xiaomi and other gear like microSD cards have fakes for which you need to watch article descriptions closely or even test the gear 'cause the sellers themselves are outright scammers (same as on eBay), but most of it is unrelated article categories.

It just zooms. In the best case (good light but not the sun in the frame) you get a smartphone-like shot, albeit arguably from far away.

If you want a sharp shot with good resolution for cropping into the frame, you'll have to use a DLSR/MILC with a decent lens.

While a proper DSLR and lens could take a better shot, it is also a lot more expensive.

Speaking of moon shots, I have personally been eyeing the Sony/Minolta 500mm mirror lens. Affordable, and has autofocus, a rarity among mirror lenses.

Not sure 500mm is long enough though.

Last weekend I shot a family event in the local church and later at the reception. Lighting was abysmal, bad weather didn't help either. The f/4 delivered nicely, there was no real difference between f/2.8 and f/4 on the 70-200 either.
I felt the need of a good speedlight and diffuser more than huge aperture lenses.

On the primes, well, those are good primes but are somewhat lacking compared to Nikon and Pentax offerings. If you don't mind manual focus then it would be a good budget option getting the Pentax SMC 50/1.4 and 50/1.7.

Get Sigma 30 1.4 instead of Sony 35 1.8, thats for sure. Also look at Sigma 60mm 2.8 for portraits.

What do you guys think about an xt1 with the Handevision f/0.85 t/0.9?
I was thinking about what a killer low light stills camera would be. I think it would work well because of the dual EVF mode with the full time punch in focus on the side. Thoughts?

The way I feel about super fast lenses is that basically, you wouldn't want to use them at their fasted therefore negating any benefits of them. Your depth of field will be so small at .85 / .90 that nothing would be sharp and almost nothing would be in focus.

I bought a fucking cheapo c-mount lens on aliexpress, a black lens, they sent me a silver lens. You would think, hey this is absolutely not the lens I ordered, and aliexpress mediator STILL would not give me a fucking refund. Not to mention the fact that it was broken.

fortunately that dic&mic vendor is legit, but my experience elsewhere on aliexpress hasn't been that great.

It depends on the distance. You dont want to use 0.85 for a head & shoulders, but at longer distances, at least across the room, should be fine. And we're not just talking about dark, I'm talking about moonlight, and/or dim light with action. I can't always bring a whole tripod.

Looking into getting a mirrorless. I plan to shoot street photography and portraits. I like the fact that they are compact, light and discreet. I have enrolled in a professional photography class and need a digital camera. I have been using film for quite a while and need a digital camera to use in the course. It doesn't matter what you're shooting, the images from any lens with that wide of an aperture will be extremely soft. Yes, they will possibly be usable but I think that investing in some lighting would be better than buying a super fast lens.

First a disclaimer that I am very new to photography.

I got my first dslr earlier this year and mostly take Astro/nightsky photo's I got an entry level d3200

My GF now wants to get into photography but is unsure on which camera to get. She LOVES the styling of the Fuji X-T10 And mostly wants to do Nature stilllife and scenery shots. But somewhere in her research (I do not know her source) she read that the nikon d3300 would be a better camera for those types of shots but she hates the body styling. I don't see why the nikon would be better but again, I'm pretty new. Any insight?

TLDR: Fuji X-T10 or Nikon D3300 for Nature still life and Scenary shots?

Tell her about Pentax K-S2 and it's sealed system including the kit lens. She will want to bring a sealed kit outside into nature and so far Pentax offers it at the lowest cost.
The equivalent would be a more expensive D7100 and expensive lens on the Nikon and X-T1 and some WR lens on the Fuji.

I will Definitely throw that Pentax into the mix. Unfortunately she put's a lot of weight on how the camera "Feels" and prefers the feel of older film cameras. Which is why she is leaning towards the Fuji Weatherproofing aside would there be any real photo quality difference between the two? I know they both have APS-C sensors, And that the Fuji is Mirrorless vs the Pentax being DSLR but I've ready many articles that mirrorless has caught up in quality and that shouldn't be a worry.

I would personally go for pentax, but you should just go for a fuji if she likes the styling better. you shouldn't ignore the looks and just go for stats only, it'll end badly.

DSLRs and mirrorless cameras use more or less the same sensors. Fuji has a few quirks, but they aren't of particular consequence.
A quality optical viewfinder is still generally better than an electronic one, but D3200/3300 have subpar pentamirror finders so that hardly applies to them.

Thanks! we always knew The X-T1 was the better option but as it's her first serious camera we want to try and keep in under a grand and see if it's really somethings she sticks with. (Same reason I am using a crappy d3200 for astro shots) Her first choice would have been the Nikon Df if price wasn't a factor. XD

I'm considering buying a k70 to do some winter photography in the cascades. I'll be snowmobiling with it so the weather sealing is definitely an attractive point,as well as the price. What do the other dslr manufacturers have over pentax on the k70 that justifies their high prices in comparison? Also, which zoom lens would be a nice landscape buy, anything specific?

I've have a ricohGR, though I'm not sure if investing in a $1000 k70 would give me substantially better quality photos, other than a few more megapixels at the base iso and a different focal length.

Any other cameras in the same price range I should look at??

Regarding the difference the Ricoh GR is a point and shoot with a digital screen only, no viewfinder. With an SLR you are looking through the lens directly, an entirely different way of shooting. You will not want to go back to a simple point and shoot interface after that. Much more connected with the image, you feeel an integrate part of taking the image. Looking at a digital screen while holding it at arms length is just too distant, no real connection going on.
