Sony now have 25% of the full frame market in europe, 95% of which is mirrorless models. They only released the a7 3 years ago, with no lens ecosystem, whereas canikon have had FF bodies for 15 years, and a massive established userbase of their lenses. How did this happen?

Sony only has one advantage: Numbers.
All their cameras look good on paper.
Actual photographers notice after a few months what pieces of shit their cameras are.
This is a small surge and Sony will soon drop again.

Sony doesn't use the IMG prefix
Sony doesn't have "subject distance range" in it's exif, they do have a field for saturation.

A digital fm3a would've been a dream come true. Grip should've been left as an aftermarket option. Autofocus module should've been left out to keep the size as small as possible. Instead of a PSAM dial, an auto setting on the ISO and shutter dials, and a switch for 'auto aperture' that automatically engages the auto aperture when stopped down to f22 if it's switched on. And of course, aperture controlled through a rear dial for lenses without an aperture ring.

It don't need high speed burst shooting sports capability, hell they didn't even add video to maintain that "pure photography" philosophy, why not go all the way.

I honestly wonder what will happen with those companies. Mirrorless just makes more sense than mirrors at this point. As the technology improves those companies will surely switch, at which point do they keep their original mounts or create a new mount and offer adapters for their old mounts? There's no way they'd keep their old mounts. "Oh hey, we're doing mirrorless now too except are versions aren't as flexible and you still can only shoot our lenses."

Because you might already be using one or more Sony sensors. Most smartphones that /p/ might like & most better IL cameras use a Sony sensor anyhow.

Sony opened a new market niche and as of yet have no direct competition. If you want the combination of small mirrorless body and FF sensor, the A7 is the only game in town.

I'm about as far from a Sony fan as it gets, but that doesn't mean I don't see why they're selling so well, they're a marketing dream.

I actually own this camera. It's far from a D700, although the AF could be better in the Df.
Although it does use the D4 sensor in a smaller body without the ability to shoot video.

Honestly, the Df kicks ass, and it looks traditional, just like any Fuji camera. So I honestly don't get the whole meme bullshit behind it.

What Fuji got right and Nikon got wrong is size. The Fuji X-Pro_ is roughly the same size as a classic rangefinder, slightly thicker than a film body but about the same as a Leica digital. Fuji also created a clean design without to fucking many buttons and dials.
Had Nikon basically come out with an A7 with an F mount, and simple controls, they would have had a winner. Instead we got a fuckhuge monstrosity littered willy-nilly with buttons and dials.

You do realize that the Df is already among the smallest and lightest FF DSLR:s? Its roughly the same size as the Canon 6D.

It's never going to happen as long as Nikon keeps using the traditional DSLR design. All that circuitry etc. must go somewhere and there simply isn't enough space for that in a FM3 -sized body.

a mirrorless in the shape of a DSLR with an optical viewfinder built into the mirrorbox instead with a superimposed liveview in the OVF akin to an xpro2 could easily fit the size profile.

Why are you so attached to a primitive workaround like a mirror mechanism? It's current year. Wisen up.

A big fat clunky pig like the DF didn't match what the target audience wanted, but neither would an EVF mirrorless camera. I guess Nikon finally caved and made the camera anyway just because so many people bitched about wanting a retro DSLR for so long that they figured the DF would sell well even if it was garbage. They probably shouldn't have bothered though if this was the closest they could manage.

Seriously though, EVFs are OK and they're still improving but a large and bright OVF is just such a pleasure to use. The simplicity and directness of control are just unmatched even by the best EVFs.

idk, I personally like things as mechanical as possible, and for me, something that works so well as a pentaprism or a pentamirror is a sign of something that probably wont break, and will still work no matter how much does technology advance. Maybe thats why I like film as well, but it would be sad to see DSLRs completely replaced by mirrorless.

The camera is actually quite compact and more lightweight than other FF dslrs. Not to mention, if you can't deal with assigning some buttons and using dials here and there, then you are not made for photography.

During many shoots, the only thing I often change is my shutterspeed/aperature. Which is controlled by two dials that are easily accessable. I preset my ISO based on location and lighting situations.
