Hey Pentax bros, tell me about your camera and why it's good. I have become interested in the K1 specifically but have no hands on experience with any Pentax cameras, local camera stores don't even stock them...

Interested in image samples and recommended lenses for the system.. No cancer lenses though. How do the newer lenses perform? Are there any super telephoto lenses??

Decent sensors.
IBIS is very useful.
The grips can feel small to begin with, but aren't.
Resist water and bumps, 1m drops admirably.
Menu's are good, controls same. It's a camera, not a computer peripheral.
I don't think I have ever used the inbuilt flash, nor video.
Buying lenses is a matter of research. So that's what determines what you end up with. There's a huge number of current and old lenses available.
I buy older lenses, and get them from Japanese sellers. Most are as good as new.
I've found that pentax and other brands *lens* autofocus is pretty good in some lenses and shithouse in others, so again; research.

Do Canikony have pixel shift? Do they have superior image processing? Do they offer fully weathersealed bodys and lenses even in the lower price range?

What are you looking for when buying a new Camera? Aesthetics? Get a Fuji then. If you want a serious tool for taking images even in harsh conditions, get a pentax.

FWIW, I used to sell cameras some years ago, and for some reason could never get quite as comfy with the Canon/Nikon controls as I did with Pentax.

As for lenses, the relatively recent 16-85 is really good as far as longish normal zoom lenses go, but that's a no go if you're eying the K1 as it's APS-C only :(

This is what I love in my K-3, it delivers solid performance on high ISO.
The AF is snappy, fast and accurate in single focus, even on older AF lenses and is decent in tracking but only in select situations. Once the subject comes towards you at high speed it loses the subject. It has been greatly improved in the K-1 by the reports. Motorsports with subject moving towards the camera is not a problem.
Lens: the early primes are mighty cheap and pretty solid. DA 35/24 cost me $80 and performs exceptionally well. DA 50/1.8 is reported similar.
The Limited lens series is something worth salivating over, well built, hyperfocal indicator, pancake design, excellent optics.

Yeah. The recommended max of 6400 is so useful at the resolutions I generally need that I don't even care when it maxxes out unecessarily. I'm infinitely more likely to be annoyed by camera shake than noise.
That said, i've tried using 51200 on a couple of occasions, partly just to see how well it works, and partly becasue it was really fucking dark and I had a long lens I usually reserve for the daytime.
It's very useable if you need it, and at one point I was setting the automatic max to 16000 and still getting good results as per 6400, the only thing that really puts me off using higher then 6400 all the time is the weird and sudden whitebalance shifts that you get....and I try to avoid processing if possible, especially on everything-is-crap-anyway-shooting like at parties. So trying to adjust WB in completely unnatural light is a bit more tedious than I like. But yeah, it's very useful to be able to shoot in the dark like that if you need to.

I do expect to need to beat market prices in order to get rid of them, but E500 feels a fair chunk on the low side....but maybe... Pity you chose a lens I actually like, even if will probably never use it again :)

Not a fan of the F series. I know some of the primes are absolutely excellent, but I can't stand the look or feel of them. Also no constant aperture on this lens.

Yeah. One was dad's from 30 years ago I used back then, the other was me thinking I was going to use the A series and buying one semi-recently. Buuuut it's heavy, soft till f/2, and modern ISOs make it sort of redundant.I feel the constant desire to use it, but never do. I kinda want to keep the A, and the K is damaged enough that people would want it for nothing, despite being perfectly operational. SO chances are i'll always own them both.
I saw a bulk price for them on alibaba once, they were US$50 per unit... but you had to buy a palette.. i forget the details but i think it was 4000 units to a palette.

a few lenses I have are thought of like that by various people...i agree about that lens, but it's autofocus is a bit annoying. The things I typically shoot (heads...moving) mean I have to be *very* quick, so noisy or seeky AF is a bit of a negative.
Mostly I seem to always have issues with the lens rotating ever so slightly on it's mount and causing contact issues, or screwdrive weirdness ... or something that makes the camera think it's in a manual apertupre mode lens ofr a moment... which tends to fuck things up fairly dramatically on the K5 and just makes frames vanish on the K3... so I am pretty happy with the HSM sigma that I use a lot (always) now.
The 300 is VERY sharp though, and easy to use due to it's relatively small aperture.
A quick look shows this link is amongst some of those shot with that lens.

Hmm... you just made me reconsider. It is the OS HSM though. Heavy as fuck and it always makes me consider a lighter setup. It's performance is good, not overly excellent but nothing to complain about, it is a huge zoom after all.
Maybe I'll look for a DA 300 and try to trade the lens off, but it has to be a very good deal to make me actually switch lenses.
I always heard the F* 300 is superb optically but maybe it is just too old of a model to expect it to work without any slack or other flaws.

At least you could've cropped them similarly
But yeah, it is quite visible. A bit more noise in extreme shadow pull than on the K-5 but still pretty much usable.
Try doing the same on a 5DIV, let alone a 70D or even 760D

The crops don't hinder the ability to compare the shots. In any case, nowadays (if I shoot with the K3) I'm always exposing to the left by -1EV or so. The demo "before" image was something like -4EV. I shot these images a while ago and can't remember exactly how it was exposed.

Unfortunately I don't have any other DSRLs to make a comparison with (aside from a 30d). God knows I wouldn't want to do this with the GR1d.

In any case, I think folks underestimate their body's abilities. Modern sensors are remarkably capable. Here's another image recovered in the same way.

Yep, -4EV is pretty much the limit for pushing shadows on the K-3. Anything more and you have to deal with ugly color shift and tonal banding.
K-5 is going like a champ on -5EV.

Yeah its a great lens, but its got its flaws. Most are just personal preference for me, minor physical and mechanical things that get annoying after you have used a 'better' lens.
I suspect using my monopod is the source of most of my coupling-rotation issues. I'm sttrong enough that lifting 3.5Kg of gear in one hand with the camera as the hold-point is something I did without much thought or care, so it's very likely I applied force in a way that stretched the pin in my camera very slightly, and that was enough. Interestingly many of the lenses I have used in that setup already had the same issue when I got them, and when I checked the lens mount slot for any distortion there was one in a few cases, but so incredibly minor that it's hard to believe that was the source. I'm thnmking that its an issue with pentax's mount pin thaat my particular taste for large lenses and not being too gentle has exacerbated.
Image related, another lens that was like this on receipt. I'm pretty sure very few people would have it cause them problems, much less even notice it's cause.

Pentax dont auto-disable IBIS when you put a screw in the tripod hole... and it is commonly used alongside the gps unit to trqack stars. So yes, it's usefu on a tripod. Moreso than any other brand that I can think of offhand.
Also, yes, it's also generally very useful. People like to say it's less effective than lens stabilisation, but I have never once seen any kind of technical proof of that. So it's entirely possible it's just as good or better in the real world of people who actually use cameras.

Any of the fuckhueg tele primes, but they're rare and expensive.

I like the 20-35mm F4 zoom myself. Yea, it's slow and the zoom is limited, but it has pretty spiffy color rendering.

Theres two types of AF interface in pentax:
screw drive - mechanical
HSM - electronic
same with aperture couplings, older ones are mechanical only, newer ones are mechanical with the option to select "A" mode on the lens aperture dial which allows the aperture to be controlled via the camera controls.
Film bodies will either have none (manual focus) screw drive only.
Digital bodies all have both afaik.
Some very new (DA & third party) lenses will have both mechanisms too.
Slightly older ones like F and FA series have screwdrive and electronic aperture.
The previous generation of A series have electronic aperture, but no AF.
K and M series are 100% manual AF and aperture.
If the lens has an actual aperture dial and has A mode on it (as well as f/diggits) then you can use it on any old film body by selecting the aperture on the dial, and if you put it on a fiklm body that suppports it, or a digital model then you can select A mode on the aperture and contyrol it via the camera body.

And the very newest DA etc that have no aperture ring.. are only controllable on a camera that can do that. So *not* most of the classic older film bodies.

Also the newestest DA lens (55-300 PLM so far) doesn't have direct aperture control mechanism, it is controlled digitally with an electromagnetic aperture drive in the lens.
Can only be used with bodies newer than K-3, so K-S2, K-3II, K-1 and K-70 only.

Anyone know where I can get some decent K1 RAWS? They can be snapshits but at least of something..

I Found some online already, but they were taken in (probably london) it is overcast and dull as shit, I really want to see how I can push and pull the files in harsher light.

Why do you need f/1.4?
If you want something more refined than the 35/2.4 then there is the 35/2.8 Limited.
The Sigma 30/1.4 Art has higher than average failure rate, not just on Pentax mount, much higher than the DA 16-50 with it's SDM plague.
I wouldn't put my money on it, the 35/1.4 Art is a much better built lens though 2x the price. And size. And weight.

What's the deal with fixing older Pentax lenses? I am interested in picking up some older equipment before purchasing a DSLR (K1) and was looking into getting a used 24mm f/2 (FA) which I believe is screw drive.

If this breaks.. Any chance Pentax would even look at it and/or be able to repair it?

Also, is this a good lens? I read that it was considered the. best 24mm Pentax made.

The only thing stopping me from getting a Pentax k-3 is the shitty selection of primes in accessible focal lengths. Mostly the lack of a good 35mm equivalent on crop (21 3.2 may be an exception but 3.2 is so fucking slow). Anyone have any recommendations in this regard?

The 30mm Art is an excellent lense for film as well, give you a great combination of wide angle and high speed, as well as truly excellent central sharpness. I'd recommend it.
