The market for cheap P&S cameras has severely collapsed; a lot less new products make it to market and they tend to generally be less... ambitious. It's "something weak and cheap, but with zoom" in the low price segment.
Smartphone manufacturers try far harder to get the good chips and optics, because who gets to sell a smartphone very often depends very much on its camera.
If you want a big upgrade, that's mostly found on hobbyist to professional IL or fixed cameras, - the advantage quite strongly contained in better lenses but also much bigger sensors that these can have.

Zoom doesn't mean you can focus closer (minimum focusing distance basically always "runs away" from you with you zooming in), and the other stuff that I could spot on skimming these posts wasn't really useful for shooting figures.
