>>2977102It's not the focal length, it's the quality. Sigma 50-500, I noticed that it needs a maximum distance where the focal plane is nice and the bokeh stays normal, then the focal plane starts to disintegrate and the bokeh becomes the distracting mess you see there. Between 100m-200m, but 200m is about the max for somewhat decent images. At 100m it is good. The longer the zoom is extended the more it is exaggerated.
I'm really torn between keeping it and replacing it with a 300/4 prime because it is very nice for closer distances.
In this particular case I was standing in the middle of the meadow looking at a pack of deer near the bushes when they jumped and ran away, that is when I noticed the fox. It came closer, didn't notice me and started hunting for gophers, at around 300m distance. I didn't try to come closer but there was nothing around to hide behind.
I know getting closer is the better choice by far but if I can't get closer at least I want some decent distant images.
