Winter photography

How can I take decent shots in the winter? Here in urban Wisconsin it looks like pic related pretty much until March (on a good year). Does anyone have anytips on how to make the pics look less drab? This is just from my phone camera BTW.

It was just an example of the weather conditions. Also, I kinda like the contrast of the abandoned mower in the snow. It's obviously not meant to be a prize winning photo.

Technical issue.
Snow is not easy to properly expose. It has to be bright. Your pic is underexposed. Even on a smartphone, you could fix that.
Subject issue.
Like others have pointed out, you're taking a pic of something boring. What do you want to show? What do you want to say? Where does this fit in?

This phone is pretty shit but yeah you're right. It's too easy to over expose snow. And I just like the summer tool in winter contrast. It felt oddly desolate.

Uh, can that phone camera shoot RAW? Set it up on a stick or something else that is stationary, make it AE bracket some exposures of a scene with a bunch of details, and see what you can do with HDR or other tooling in post.

In the film days of shooting tons of rolls like he did, yeah. In modern times with instant feedback on digicams and massive amounts of information online you can divide that number by at lest two before arriving at the number of images you'll need to take before you start getting "good".

My point is nothing in photography is original anymore, everything has been done to death, but you're clearly too naive and arrogant to understand that. However, that doesn't mean cliches and unoriginal photos are a bad thing, you just need to execute them better than the majority to stand out. You're never going to learn and improve if you're not taking photos because it's "been done 100,000,000,000 times!!11!!1 ".

It's going to be awfully hard to get photos that aren't drab on an overcast day with snow on the ground. Even properly exposing your photos will still leave things bland and boring, because between the sky acting as a giant softbox and the snow acting as a giant reflector, there will be hardly any shadows to give contrast and shape to things.
