JPG is absolutely the right choice over PNG for distributing and displaying photographs. If you're going to edit or scale a picture, you shouldn't be using the JPG, but you shouldn't be using a PNG either--you should be using the original RAW or you shouldn't be fuckin' editing it because it's not your fuckin' photo to edit. If you just want to do a quick little edit on something to post on 4chan as a joke, then you really don't need every single ounce of quality that the PNG gives you to do so.
