It bothered me as well, but I was editing a .jpg anyway. I could have done better if I had a raw file. Anyway, if it makes you so uncomfortable, you can go on the past /rpt/ and edit it yourself, I'd like to see how others edit the same picture I edit.

you know even with .JPG you can avoid that banding, right? Don't ruin a subject like that. Reedit without vignetting.

Looks crisper.

People hate USM - mainly because it squashes the highlights and shadows, but if you act to protect them before you apply those values (by bolstering them in "highlights and shadows" and curves) you can bring out a lot of details in low contrast images.

In your case the whole image is midtones so the S&H arent badly affected either way.

If by protect you mean make sure that the blue indicator lights dont show up anywhere before I make the unsharp mask then yeah i made sure to do that heres a screenshot of the settings i dialed into lightroom before i put in the unsharp mask

Before and after the unsharp mask with the amount 15 and radius 85 i think it looks better than with what i did and this was done with the blacks on lightroom at +46 and shadows +48 let me know if that is bad in any way

Typically lenses have a gradual degradation in quality the closer you get to the corners. When you shoot at around f8 (I'm just using f8 as an example because it's the aperture that gets compared against the lens' most open aperture in MTF charts) to be able to have the best possible image quality, and, it also helps out with increasing your depth of field so more of your landscape is in focus

5.6 is fine. It's usually when someone is shooting f11 or f16. Some lens are sharp at 5.6. Obviously wide open can have edge problems too.

Thanks for getting back! I took it at night - everything was lit up by the full moon and I thought it was interesting how most of them stood perfectly still (15sec exposure) but you can still see a couple of ghosted sheep.

I tried to show that in the photo by making it a little dark but still bright enough that you could see the details to convey that. Also, wanted to try my hand at b&w photos so i also tried to retain a bunch of different textures and details.

Any suggestions on how I should have gone about framing the photo or editing it?

Here is how it came off the camera - only thing i did is resized to 1000px but the wb is a bit off. I really liked the hills in the back in b&w but it felt unbalanced on the right so i cropped it in.

I think the color version is better than the black and white. In the b&w the shadows really dominate everything and it makes the background so visually uninteresting that I didn't notice what it was until you posted the color version and I went back to double check it. You could still edit it to change the colors like >>2984419 but the b&w you did was a detraction rather than an improvement.

look at the light/halo around the girl, do you see that the grey color transition is not smooth? it has those "steps", vertical lines in it. that's banding. often an issue with image compression, low bitrates, or too high contrasts. idk many reasons - even if you don't recognize it, it's disturbing the look of the Picture. good thing is there are ways to avoid it or get rid of it in post

Composition is great, I think if you chose a different angle where the skater was beside the tree, the viewer would be more inclined to look at the tree rather than the skater. Also nice job capturing the board at prime rotation. The only suggestion I have would be to clone out the small distractions like the leaf on the ground, dust specks in the sky, that sign in the background.

Good shot mate, you're definitely improving on the last photos you posted.

Oh man you're so close with these. The light is killer but the a few lack interest. It was a suggestion, not a mandate. The subject can be something non-human. I mean look at photos from The Storr. I just think that if the idea of this photo is the geometry then it's just not really a good idea. I did this in street all the time when I was still super new at it. I would take a nice photo of fucking nothing and realize that I'm taking pictures of backdrops and settings, not subjects. I think he's doing the same thing here. These are amazing settings but poor subjects. It needs some other interest.

But that's my opinion. You could say something about the path leading over the edge and not knowing where it leads. This is just my interpretation.

It's a xmas tree, so getting the bokeh centered was odd for a quick snap.

The iso was a definite mistake

Ah, you were talking of all of them? I thought you ment only the one you quoted. I'm not sure on the contrast. Pushed 2stops in D76, which usually gives enough contrast to my taste and lots of areas are massively underexposed.

Honestly, I thought this was a stock and you wanted to hear thoughts on something else.
You got a nice expression there and the lighting is fine too, but
a. that fleck over his left shoulder is pretty distracting.
b. I do not know if it is the resizing or the image itself but I think this one need to be sharper (old peoples portraits in general imo)

Cheers for the crit, I wondered the same about the softness - I added a little noise reduction because 800iso but I think I lost that crispness it came with. Comparing with this one without that noise reduction, how does it fare?
