What's the contemporary LIFE magazine that comes close to being as great as LIFE was ?

There isn't one. Modern day media conglomerates are not interested in quality journalism. They have other agendas and their corporate mantra is "we don't simply report the news, we influence they way people feel about it"

I'm sure their are magazines filled with good photojournalism still, but none with anywhere near the popularity and presence of Life in its prime.

Unfortunately such things are dead, and mediocrity has taken over as the high standard. I also remember that we got the other photo mag when I was a kid, and that was LOOK. Between the two of them I was doomed to be a photographer.
