just did upstate NY to Detroit and back. I'm not an urbex guy but almost all the open abandoned homes in Detroit had squatters. Jefferson Chalmers and Mexicantown were just pure gnar. The Packard factory is home to what my local assistant called "Detroit Diamonds", shattered windows. People just hang out around the corner waiting for people to go in and jack shit out of the car all day long. Never saw DPD.
Cleveland was similar but a bit more populated and with more foot traffic for similar weather so it was a bit easier to work.
Pittsburgh was cool. If I was an urbex shooter, Pittsburgh would be my first stop. Lots of industry, not a lot of squatters.
If you just want abandoned homes, rural areas are also very good. I've done some good images in old barns and abandoned homes in the Finger Lakes/Otsego Lake area of upstate NY. Almost 0% chance of squatters once you're 4+ miles from gas stations or post offices. My number one thing if there are cars in the vicinity that look abandoned is to check the license plate registration sticker. Is it valid or expired last year? Possibly still in use and someone mulling around.

I've been in Ottawa for a few weeks and it's been great. Zero chance of being robbed or stabbed in the streets unless you're involved with gangs and dealing drugs... which is not really a problem because drug dealers have storefront pot shops now.

It depends on what you want to explore, what you want to capture. If you don't want to get shot, your best bet is to either go out during the day or avoid the shadier areas altogether. Which is good or bad, depending on what you want to explore. The shadier neighborhoods will likely have older buildings with more wear and the upscale spots probably have a lot of modern buildings. I know it's common to bash on the new stuff and glorify the old, but IMO that's just taking all of the new architecture for granted.

Thats detroit, on the northern end of downtown. They were gutting some old building, all that was left was the front facade.

a few years back Ohio has some good places to explore, but most of it is getting torn down now

Not many cameras work at all at ISO 16,000. It doesn't look terrible and I actually think the grain and softnesss suits the photo in >>2998320

even getting a faster lens wont be of that much use shooting in the dark. Long shutter speed on tripod is usually the way to go, many ue's also use light painting, which can be really really tacky if not used with subtlety

you can also use the flash of a cheap point and shoot camera or something to create more dramatic light from different directions, just take shots with your pns flash while the main cameras long exposure is running. can overexpose your shot p easily tho.

There are small cities in Brazil worth visiting, though. When i was there, i went to Pirenopolis and Campos do Jordao, and took great shots of nature and old buildings. Rio is also cool for generic shit, but beach photography is best at Guarapari and Fernando de Noronha.
Sao Paulo is truly bad for urban photography, unless you want to get a feel of ugliness and dirty streets on your shots. Not to mention it's pretty dangerous.

I dont bring a camera because I'm paranoid about breaking it but I do do a lot of roofclimbing/urban trespassing here in London.

On Sundays all the construction sites are abandoned - climbing up scaffolding is a favourite activity of mine.

São Paulo is the best city for urban life shots in Brazil.
I live in Brazil btw. Brasilia is just Oscar Niemeyer showoff so everyone and their grandfathers have postal cards with every angle possible. Much like every tourist in Rio already took all shots possible at the Museu do Amanhã.

"Urban life" is more than old buildings and squatters everywhere, not to mention the fucking fog that covers every single building
The river that crosses the city was purple, and i was not able to find a single building in proper conditions for a shot, everything was monotonous and didn't make up for a good subject.
TL;DR everything in sao paulo is boring.
i suggest you look up asian street photography, maybe moroccan and some european. Unfortunately, your city doesn't deserve all that attention.
