Color is both a physical phenomenon and a perceptual interpretation of that phenomenon. Our eyes aren't all that good at perceiving color and brains fuck with the color information sent by our eyes.
While objects reflect light of certain wavelengths and this can be objectively measured - the way that we experience color changes with a number of variables.
The tension between these things (actual color and perceived color) creates a lot of dumb conversation among photography enthusiasts. This often leads them to purchase expensive color targets that 99% of the time are useless.
In reality, chasing the "correct" white balance is futile.
If you are chasing "natural colors" - you still need to apply judicuous interpretation to the image. You just need to adjust the color in your image to approximate what you believe to be how the captured colors might have been perceived by an observer under certain conditions. Was the viewer just sleeping? Does he have blood pressure? Was is very bright and a cloud just passed by? Good fucking luck with that, Chuck.
So, after all this discussion and buying all the color targets... we come to the ultimate conclusion that you really just have to fuck with the sliders until it looks good.
